For the discussion, book followed by movie
Although if anyone prefers to watch the movie first that is fine, but just hold the discussion of the movie until after the book is read :)

Questions for Chapters 1-3
1. Interesting pair these two. Em likes Dex but Dex can't wait to get the hell out of Dodge and as far away from Em as possible. What were your first impressions of Emma and Dexter?
2. It doesn't seem like Dex is interested in Emma (certainly not as interested as she is). Why do you think he stays in contact with her?
3. Like mother, like son. I have to say, I enjoyed Dexter's mother- normal she is not. What did you guys think of her? Any predictions for what she was about to tell Dex?
4. Did you realize that each chapter is a different year but the month and day remain the same (July 15)? What do you think is the author's purpose for doing this?
5. Which of Emma's jobs do you think was more horrible, the acting gig or the waitress job?
6. Was I the only one surprised by Dex's sentimental letter? I didn't know he had it in him.
7. Damn you, Heidi Schindler! I can't believe the letter wasn't delivered. And just when Dex was being decent too. Why do I feel like we'll be reading about a series of unfortunate events from now on?

Chapters 1-3
1. God I love these two. But then you know that already seeing that this is one of my all time favourite books. Emma reminds me of any other young girl of the time with lots of smarts, but little direction or confidence. Dexter doesn't quite have the smarts, but he has means and tons of confidence. I love the 'ying' and 'yang' aspect. One of my favourite quotes of the book is:
"If I could give you just one gift ever for the rest of your life it would be this. Confidence. It would be the gift of confidence. Either that or a scented candle."
2. Dexter loves to be loved. And Emma is interesting, funny, non-threatening (to his freedom or independence) and possibly his only true friend
3. I can't comment on this. Big sigh.
4. My favourite part of the novel. Just so clever to take this slice of life and still be able to keep a novel that actually makes sense and is able to develop the characters
5. Both are pretty awful, but some of my favourite quotes come from the waitressing job.
"Emma: Welcome to the graveyard of ambition"
*
Emma: "Why, what's your stroke?
Ian: my what?
Emma: Your stroke. Everyone who works here has a stroke. Waiter-stroke-artist, waiter-stroke-actor. Paddy the bartender claims to be a model, but frankly, I'm doubtful
.....
Ian: what about you?
Emma: me?
Ian: your stoke? what else do you do?
....
Emma: Oh I do this-'...This is what I do"
6. Drunken sentimental letter! I guess these days it would be e-mail and there would be no taking it back!
7. I like this, as "tragic" as it seems as it goes to Dexter's character and true intentions/readiness. If he *really* wanted Em to be there he would've realised he didn't post the letter and call her or something.

Questions for Chapter 4-5
8. Do you think Dex goes through so many women to make Em jealous? Or is he just being his regular womanizing self?
9. Is it me, or is Dex really irksome? What do you think is his worst quality? Feel free to rant about Ema too.
10. Why are Ema and Dex pussyfooting around each other? She likes him, he likes her- so what's the hold up? Must we suffer years/chapters for someone to take the first step?!
11. I don't know about you, but I thought that nacho poem was gold! I think they should put it on the menu ;)
12. What do you think of the book so far? Is it living up to the hype and, more importantly, your expectations?
13. Ema mentions that Dexter slips into a Cockney accent from time to time. If you've never heard one before then here is a clip of Eliza Doolittle's Cockney in My Fair Lady

Chapters 4-5
8. No, I think it is just him
9. Isn't he just? But I still love him flawed and all. He is a rich kid with no direction who loves to be loved and wants to just "have fun"
10. I don't think they are. As he honestly states, he fancies pretty much everybody and he needs a certain "level of behaviour" with Em. If they were to get together it would totally destroy their relationship as they are not ready for eachother. I love their friendship
11. Yes, she is very talented... ;)
8. No, I think it is just him

11. Yes, she is very talented... ;)

1. I have to admit that I didn't really get a good sense of them in the first chapter. They were cute and funny, but I kept wondering why these two were together and how long they'd been in the room. Too many questions! But the letters in the next two chapters helped paint a better picture of their lives and personalities for me. I'm still not feeling the urge for them to get together, though, so I'm assuming some interesting stuff will happen along the way!
2. I got that impression too. He is drawn to her, though, and I think he doesn't quite want to close that chapter of his life. Plus, who wouldn't want to keep receiving such entertaining letters?
3. What a cliffhanger! I thought his mother was a really interesting character. I was thinking she would tell him she was sick, or that their money was drying up.
4. It's kind of cool to see these snapshots into how their lives have changed in a year, and I'm assuming the date becomes significant (at least the jacket copy implies as much).
5. Definitely the waitress gig.
6. I wondered what made him open up all of a sudden. Two years of sending pithy postcards, so why now? Has Emma built some intimacy with him by continuing to send her detailed letters?
7. I get that impression too.

8. I think Dex doesn't know what to do with his feelings for Em and is scared of them, so maybe he overcompensates a little with the other women. I think there are so many of them because none of them *are* Emma.
9. I must say, there isn't a whole lot about Dex that appeals to me. His whole handling of the conversation and skinny dipping in Greece was off-putting.
10. They're in that awkward phase where you're such good friends that you can openly talk about being in a relationship, but you're still scared to try it. I think they both need to feel better about their lives before they can be together, particularly Emma.
11. Ha! The thought of those nachos made me queasy.
12. I'm really enjoying the book so far. I didn't know much about it - not even that they were British! Did Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhall do accents?
13. I love Cockney accents. There's something so comforting about it. I'm more curious about Emma's Yorkshire accent. That's more Northern and Scottish sounding, right? Like Gwen in Downton Abbey?
@Logan - Yes, Anne Hathaway does a Yorkshire accent and was absolutely panned for it, but I thought she did a god job as a "true" Yorkshire accent we wouldn't have been able to undestand! lol! Yes, similar to Gwen.
And Dexter in the movie is Jim Sturgess who is English anyway (and I love him!). I knew him from one of my favourite movies "Across the Universe" (not to be confused with the book of the same name)

Jim Sturgess is awesome! I loved Across the Universe, but I am a huge Beatles fan.
Now I keep picturing Anne Hathaway saying "You know nothin' Jon Snooow." ;)
lol
same here - love The Beatles and that is what drew me to the movie. I make people watch it all the time and have the soundtrack going in my car when I don't feel like an audio book.

Questions for Chapters 6&7
14) Dex seems to be on a downward spiral. Do you think he'll clean up his act or will he continue into self destruction?
15) If Emma had been home when he called her do you think they would have become a couple?
16) Thoughts of Ian as Emma's new boyfriend?
17) I'm guessing Dex's mom wanted to discuss her illness in the last set of chapters. Do you agree?
18) Do these small, short glimpses into the relationship Dex and Emma have annoy you? We don't get all the information all at once. We find thing out later after the fact. Does it distort the view of what is going on?
19) Do you think Emma is good for Dex? Do you think Dex is good for Emma?
20) St. Swithin's Day is 15 July, a day on which people watch the weather for tradition says that whatever the weather is like on St. Swithin's Day, it will continue so for the next forty days. Do you think Swithin's Day has some significance as to why all these snapshots into the relationship are given. If they get along well it lasts perhaps for the remainder of the year and likewise if they don't? Do you think it's just a coincidence that the author picked this day or do we need to wait for the real reason the book centers on this day?

Chapters 6&7
14. Oh sends shivers down my spine. Especially at the end when he, I think quite honestly, says to Naomi that she is saving his life
15. No. He just needed someone. Like Ian says, he takes her for granted. I think she would've stayed with him and tried to sober him up, that is all. her life is far too "together" right now
16. He is so awkward isn't he? He is one of those guys you kind of like but not really in that way...lol
17. Oh so sad.
"Sometimes I worry that you're not very nice"
18. No, I love it. Such an original way to tell a long story without getting bogged down in the minutia
19. Not right now. I think he needs her much more than the other way around. That is not a way to sustain a friendship
20. I never really considered it having relevance, but I guess that could be right. The way that day starts is how their year continues

Questions for Chapter 8 - Chapter 9
21) Looks like Ion and Emma are an item and someone isn't too happy about that. tee hee hee
22) My prediction is this one won't last (Ion and Emma).
23) Are we ever going to see Dexter clean up his act? I found this not the most entertaining of chapters to read. A little boring. Can't believe Dex would get drunk before doing a program. Wait. Yes, I can.
24) Emma seems to be doing well. Did the incident with the headmaster seem a little off/odd?
- "Personally I'm more of a Sweet Charity man. Remind me, why couldn't we do sweet Charity?"
"Well it's a musical about prostitution, so..."
What the heck!
25) How did you like the way Emma handled the children?
26) What do you make of Suki and Dex? Were you surprised she didn't tattle on him?
27) Dex is turning into a mean drunk. I can't believe he said what he did to Emma. Those who can do, those who can't teach. Gah! I'm glad she broke it off.

Chapters 8-9
21. yes, she really has matured over the last few years and he really hasn't changed at all
22. well she doesn't seem terrily happy. I think it is just "comfortable"
23. Oh I don't find this part boring. To me it is the bottom part of that spiral and all the glitz and glamour is wearing off. He is an old man doing a TV show for teens....
24. It was a bit odd. He kind of crossed the line with that compliment
25. She is clearly well suited to teaching
26. No, but she obviously wanted to start a relationship with him. I love how her dialogue is all in CAPS
27. Yes he is completely full of himself. I love what she says:
"Dexter, I love you so much. So, so much, and I probably always will... I just don't like you anymore. I'm sorry"

Questions for Part Three - Chapter 12
28) Wow! I didn't expect Emma to have an affair with the headmaster. Gah! What a creep he turned out to be.
29) Ian stalking Emma? Men seem to not like letting her go. That truly was kind of creepy too. Do you think she just has bad taste in men?
30) Dex's life might have just hit rock bottom. Thoughts?
31) What do you think of Dex's new girlfriend? I think she sounds a bit scary.
32) Could Dex actually be starting to clean up his act?
33) Anyone else think the Moriarty game was very strange?
34) Do you think the girlfriend is controlling and that is what Dex needs at this time--someone to control him because he's so out of control?

14) It's sad seeing Dex go down this path. But I do like seeing these characters both go through periods where we don't like them very much. It feels honest.
15) No, I think they're still in two very different places.
16) Barf. I want to throw Ian out the window.
17) I think so. I think she also has a lot of things she wants to get off her chest to Dex, but doesn't know how.
18) I agree with Karen - I think it keeps the story moving in a nice, unconventional way.
19) Not right now! But there's still hope.
20) Everything in a novel has a purpose, and this one will probably be revealed in time, if only as a theme. I had no idea about St. Swithin's Day, so it was fun to learn something new!

21) GO AWAY IAN. YOU ARE BORING AND I DO NOT LIKE YOU.
22) The worst part of the Ian situation is how Emma refuses to face her feelings and keeps getting in deeper. Giving up her cute apartment and buying this wretched house? Nooooooo!
23) Like Karen, I liked seeing the bottom of Dex's spiral. (At least, I hope it's the bottom.) It gives me hope that he can come back from this and build the life he really wants instead of one he just fell into with ease.
24) Yeah, that was weird. Who would ever suggest Sweet Charity for a kids' play?!
25) I thought it was great - particularly her talk with the girl (can't remember her name now). It shows us that Emma was right and she does have a gift for teaching.
26) I like the character of Suki, but I thought it was a little odd that they ended up as a couple. I would think Suki would not be attracted to a washed up drunk has-been.
27) All drunks turn mean eventually, and I thought these chapters built up to the confrontation really well. We can see it coming in slo-mo as he pushes more and more people out of his life and the way he treats Emma as an obligation to get out of. I'm just happy Emma stood up for herself and am looking forward to seeing how they bounce back from this.
lol Logan! Poor Ian. He is useless and boring but at least he isn't mean ;)
I think Suki just wanted to have the whole "couple" thing as a publicity tool for the show. And let's face it, she doesn't seem very bright...lol

Questions for chapter 13
35) Wow! Dex getting married? What is your current opinion of his fiance?
36) What will Dex do with himself now that he doesn't seem to be able to keep a job?
37) What did you make of the maze and the kiss?
38) Do you think Dex's fiancé tricked him into marrying her--she is pregnant?
39) Anyone else not seeing a happy ending for Dex's family?
40) Do you think the two will ever end up together--Dex & Emma? So many missed opportunities and so many hurdles.

40) Do you think the two will ever end up together--Dex & Emma? So many missed opportunities and so many hurdles.

28) Emma seems to almost be punishing herself with these bad choices in men. The Beard? Really?
29) It was sad to see how desperately Ian wanted her back, but also how angry he was not only with her but with himself, I think. He had to have known that she wasn't truly in love with him. If only she'd had the courage to speak up earlier, maybe they could have had a better ending - they seemed to actually communicate for once during their fight.
30) I want Dex to hit bottom so he can start building his life again. I think the TV thing wasn't really working for him anyway, so getting fired - sorry, sacked - was a good thing.
31) She seems so cold to me. I wouldn't want to spend time with her!
32) He does seem to be gaining some control, but what happens when he loses Sophie?
33) The Moriarty game was soooo weird. Who plays a game as an adult where you hit people with sticks?
34) I think that's a great point and I hadn't thought of it that way, but yes, I think he needs someone else to help him with control.

I started this a little bit late due to being sick, but I'm catching up now. Trying for about 100 pages a day to be there with you by the movie, if not before.
I absolutely love the style in which this story is being told. Dexter seems like a bit of a dick at the moment, but boy his story makes good story!
I also like the fact that Emma is clearly his constant, just as much as Dexter is Emma's constant. I know there was a lot of talk at the beginning of Emma being more into Dexter than the other way around. But especially as things with Dexter's mum worsen, I think Dexter is going to need all the strength and support from Emma that she can muster.
And hopefully, although I'm seeing that people don't like Ian in a relationship with Emma, hopefully that relationship will end up giving Emma a little bit of sorely needed self esteem.
I like how things keep no quite matching up for the two of these guys. If it was too easy for them to get together, then we wouldn't have this book. The author has done a really good job of giving good reasons for them to stay apart while keeping us still liking both main characters.

35) I'm shocked! This story just took a huge turn! I almost feel bad for Sylvie though, because shotgun weddings rarely turn out well.
36) Maybe he can go back to photography.
37) I'm glad they made up, but I'm not sure how I feel about the kiss. I wish it had been less awkward and more romantic. :)
38) I don't think she tricked him. I think they're both in a hard situation trying to do the right thing.
39) Yeah, I have no doubt the end is near for this relationship. Poor Jas.
40) I hope so! But the older they get, the more I wonder...
Questions for Chapters 14-15
41. When Jasmine was born Dexter felt sentimental stating,“...he knew that he would sacrifice his life for her. [her being Jasmine]..Dexter Mayhew made a solemn resolution. He resolved to do the right thing from now on.” Fast forward a few pages and he's drinking while baby sitting and giving his baby unneeded medicine. When will this man learn?!
42. I'm glad Dexter decided to sallow his pride and work for Callum and no matter how much I question some of his choices I can't believe Sylvie would be low enough to have an affair with Callum. Do you think Dex deserved this? Is Sylvie and Callum a better match?
43. Finally! I thought this day would never come, Emma and Dex are together. Do you think they'll make it? Or will Dexter do something to mess it up?

Part Three - Chapter 12
28. I think she was just reacting to the situation with Ian and I'm sure a psychologist would have a field day with this affair!
29. I agree with Logan. He obviously didn't realise how she was feeling and so I felt very sorry for him. I think she doesn't have confidence in herself, so enjoys men showing her attention. Maybe she doesn't feel like she deserves better?
30. He needed to reach this point. Hopefully will learn from it!
31. She is very closed off emotionally. So different to Emma in pretty much every way!
32. I think so
33. I found this *so weird* in the movie, and it actually made more sense in the book. I guess this is an English thing so maybe it makes more sense to UK readers. It was a pretty funny scene though ;)
34. Good point. She certainly grounds him
chapter 13
35. I was so surprised when I first read this. It was such a nooooooo moment. But I also understand. Perhaps Dex was enjoying the stability she brings?
37. I like that they are friends again. They need eachother
38. No. I think he is happy to do it. he has realised the need to grow up
chapters 14-15
41. I understand though. Having a baby is not easy!!
42. I was shocked about this, but I think they are a better match. Poor Dex
43. Emma finally has everything together and Dex has cleaned up his act. I think this is the perfect time for them to try and be together. I love love love her line:
"If you lead me on, or let me down or go behind my back, I will murder you. I swear to god I will eat your heart"
*grin*

41. Well, he did admit it only took 90 minutes or so before he was smoking in the bathroom. :) It was almost sweet watching him stumble through parenthood.
42. At least Sylvie seemed to feel bad about it...unlike Callum. It's not like she and Dex were going to make each other happy.
43. I hope this means that things work out for them both! It's funny seeing them try and make it happen later in life. After being friends for so long, I imagine it would be strange to try and build a relationship now. Dex better be good to her because that Frenchman seemed a keeper!

Still catching up, still reading as fast as I can, still behind ;)
Oh my god, I can't believe how much Dexter and Emma's lives have turned around. Like, completely opposites. Early on, it seemed like Dexter had it really going on, and Emma was in the dead end job and depressed.
I absolutely love just how much they are looking at Dexter's drug and alcohol addictions, and how they are morphing and reappearing year after year. I also love how, even though the funeral of Dexter's mother is never actually shown, you have that beautiful moment described of Emma being there for him...
Finally, Emma and Ian broke up, but I don't think it's that much of an improvement so far with her affair. Methinks we are about to have another turn where Dexter has gotten to his rock bottom so his life's about to get better and Emma's life is about to get worse again.
Better get back to reading and see if that's right!
lol Nicole. It seems like a small book, but the font is tiny so it does take time to read :)
I agree about the changin nature of the characters and I love that because it is so true in life!

Questions for Part 4- Chapter 23
44. My how the tables have turned. Sylvie is jealous of Emma and Dexter's relationship even though she was the one to cheat; her relationship with Callum is going sour and Emma and Dex are married and trying to have a baby..So why why whhhyyyyy did David Nicholls feel the need to kill off Emma? Why is he trying to torture us??
45. After such a momentous event with Emma dying, Why do you think the author decided to use flashback instead of jumping a year ahead like he usually does?
46. I feel horrible to Dex, so much that I can't even get angry at him for reverting to his old ways. Just when he puts his life together it falls apart.
47.Everyone is really pulling through for Dex in his time of need. Are you more shocked at Sylvie's compassion or Ian's letter?
48. It wasn't mentioned, but I wandered if Sylvie and Callum's marriage lasted. What do you guys think?
49. Somehow I knew that something would happen between Dex and Maddy. I thought Dex would have an affair with her [when Emma was alive (I'm glad he didn't). But do you think Maddy is a good match for him? Will they last? (even though the book is over ;)
50. What did you think of the book overall? How did you rate it?

Chapters 16-23
44. As much as this shocked me when I first read the book, after multiple readings (and discussions with friends!) I think it had to happen. Dex needs other people, and he can survive without Emma whereas she could not have lived without him. They were in a pivotal point of their relationship where I think Dex would have cheated and done badly by her - unfortunately - and this way it never quite got into that spiral. It has taken me a long time to realy think that the author could not have had a HEA here. It would not have been real. Emma dying makes sense to keep validity to the story.... Even though I cry every time!!!!
45. I love this. I get shivers just thinking about it. Love love love that we get to see that flashback and "close the loop" as there are no more St Swithin's Days for them. Just love that the writer did this
46. Yes, I also love that we can feel compassion for him despite all his flaws!
47. No, I thought Sylvie was wonderful and it was not unexpected. Ian's letter was, but I am glad he wrote it. Oh! I want to cry!
48. I hope so :)
49. Dex need to be with someone. He can't be alone. She is the right person for him right now
50. One of my all time favourites and only one of about a dozen books I have given 5 stars to. I adore character driven novels, and I felt such a connection with Emma and Dex, and continue to every time I read this. It is just so "real" to me.
My review:
I fell in love with Emma and Dexter. At the end of the book I felt like I was saying goodbye to two old friends, and so then I went and watched the movie. And then read the book again, and then watched the movie again...! There is just something special about this book. I love the concept of the snapshot of their lives - just that one day is shown - every year for 20 years. I love watching these two very different people grow up, the choices they make, the mistakes and successes. It is a piece of writing that takes a slice of life and opens it up for us all to peek in

44. I was so shocked! I believed in Dex and that he could make it work long term with Emma, so it was very sad to see her life end. Interesting that the author picked Emma to be the one to go.
45. I, like Karen, really liked the flashbacks. It was so nice to see their beginnings, colored by the events we've lived through with them along the way.
46. I sort of expected Dex to spiral again. It's pretty hard to stay the straight and narrow after a devastating loss like that.
47. I was very surprised by Ian's letter - if only because how did he know where to send it? I like to think that he wanted, for just a moment, to be back in Emma's life and make peace with all that had passed between the three of them.
48. I'm guessing not.
49. Karen's right in that Dex needs someone in his life at all times. I think Maddie is a good fit for him right now, too.
50. I liked it. I rated it 3 stars. There were times when I got a little bored, and as with all character-driven fiction, at times I found myself not liking the characters very much which makes it harder to keep turning the pages. I'm looking forward to the movie! I ordered it from Netflix yesterday, so hopefully it gets here tomorrow or Saturday.

Still! I have loved this book, and reading it fast means I may also have time for other buddy reads that I won't be behind on ;)
I think someone else noted around this point that both Dexter and Emma seem to be getting their lives together at the same time. How crazy! But I hope so.
That chapter on Dexter looking after Jasmine was just paaaainful.
Yes Nicole that was a difficult chapter! I guess I read it through new eyes after having a newborn!!

However, reading through Karen's view of the ending with the benefit of multiple reads, I will admit that this was not something I had thought of and does make the death of Emma easier to bear.
I too had thought that Emma was the easier one to lose, if one of them had to die, if only because of Jasmine.
The reason why I loved the loop back to 1988 was because I had wondered in those early chapters however it was that these two had gone from that slightly awkward night to just being friends and keeping contact. Those cut scenes at the end answered all those questions for me. I LOVED seeing Dexter's mother again, too.

But that's the gift with movies, though. You don't get to 'see' charm in books, just see it described, and hope the author does a good job of it ;)
Oh it is a shame you felt dissatisfied with the ending Nicole!
I agree Logan that Jim Sturgess *is* Dexter. Actually I thought all the casting for the movie was great. Ian is fantastic isn't he?! I find the movie difficult to watch everytime. The way it opens with the bike ride and then closes with that again... And watching Dexter's grief is very difficult. I loved the movie. One of the few movies that I think reflects the book well.

lol!
Those characters just get under your skin. I can't tell you how many conversations I have had with people about Emma and Dex!!
