Carrie (icanhasbooks) Oh nice.

message 352: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H I think I'm going to read Need (Need, #1) by Carrie Jones but I want to check and make sure that I would get cover points for the gold lips since the fairy-like chick in the video has gold lips. Also, if the chick is considered fairy-like could I get a plot point because this book is about the Fae?

message 353: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments I wish they would answer my questions cause this book would be worth 17 points.

message 354: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) What is this magical book you speak of??

message 355: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Carrie I'll message you. Give me one second

message 356: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments ok sent you message

message 357: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H Melissa, could you explain to me how you might be able to get 17 points?

message 358: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Sure Jennifer there are different points for different things you match up

Shelf= 1 point - (only the shelf linked under that week's song counts for this)
Cover= 2 points - (item on the cover links to the title, video clip or lyrics)
Plot= 3 points - (one of the plot points links to the song)
Title= 4 points - (song title and book title have matching key words i.e. not a preposition)
Name= 5 points - (First or last name of author, artist or character matches)
Setting= 6 points - (first published date matches release date or place matches lyrics)

So a book published in 2011 is worth 6. If the cover matches the video somehow that is another 2 points. This week we have a bonus word of Stomp so if the word stomp is in book in any form that is another point. Add up all the points and you get a total.

message 359: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Looks like someone already posted the book I'm thinking of in another thread and figured out that was the book I'm asking on so might as well post it. Don't know though that the name will count for points nor do I know if the plot will A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

message 360: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H I'm not sure about this since I haven't read the book but would this work for setting...in the video it is snowy and cold and this book is set in Maine (so it is most likely snowy and cold)?

message 361: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments you'd have to ask mod. But usually setting has to link to lyrics not video. Post in the main thread and see what they say.

message 362: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H What book are you going to read Melissa?

message 363: by Carrie (last edited Feb 01, 2013 08:00AM) (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) I think I have one, shelf, setting, cover, word and I think plot.

Edit: And now I have to go out.

message 364: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments I think this is going to be a slow week for our group but that is ok. I think a lot of people are struggling for points.

I'm going to read A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

message 365: by Carrie (last edited Feb 01, 2013 06:33PM) (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) I think I'm going to go with Stained Glass Monsters (Eferum, #1) by Andrea K. Höst

It'll give me 15 points.

Edit: Make that 16 points, "stomping" is in it for word.

message 366: by Vi (new)

Vi Ooh that's a good one, Carrie! I was about to go with Working Stiff but this is better. I've wanted to try this author for so long. I think I'll be able to start the book only tomorrow.

This week hasn't been good. I've been in a slump and haven't finished ANY book. :(

message 367: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) Oh that sucks Vi, I hate getting in slumps.

Jennifer H Week 5:Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men (2011)

Cloaked by Alex Flinn
Cloaked by Alex Flinn
Finished:2/2
Rating:★★★★

Review:
What a treat! Cloaked has all the elements of a wonderful fairy tale:

*The young lad with a pure heart who works tirelessly to support his sweet mother
*The beautiful princess in peril
*A quest
*A cast of assorted enchanted creatures
*An evil witch
*A promised reward of riches

Ok, so South Beach isn't quite the a land far, far away. And, ok, the beautiful princess is seemingly vacuous and far too often caught on camera with a drink in her hand. And, yes, repairing shoes in a posh hotel isn't quite as grueling as dragon slaying.

But Johnny Marco is perfect as the sweet young man with a good work ethic, dreams of success, and his eye on a pretty girl. He knows a good shoe when he sees it but doesn't always see what's right in front of him. Meg, his best friend since childhood, serves as his sidekick/conscience (and protector) as Johnny accepts a quest that could help him save his family from the poor house (or at least bankruptcy). Princess Victoriana turns out to be quite different from her media image, and she's the beautiful rich girl with a broken heart and a request for Johnny. Johnny is itching for some adventure and allows himself to fall into a world that he once thought impossible. On his journey he encounters talking swans and rats, challenges giants, finds out how much a promise is worth, and discovers something that has been with him all along. Going along with him on his trip is so much fun that it's a bit of a letdown when the story ends.

Cloaked is clever, witty fun and once again demonstrates that some of the best fiction these days is in the Young Adult genre. It was a pleasure to read this book, and it was fun to discover a new-to-me author. This is a book that I will definitely recommend to my fellow book loving friends.

Points:
Plot=3 Johnny embarks on a quest to help the Princess find her brother
Setting=6 Book was published in 2011
Bonus Word:Stomp=1 ...sleep until the giants come back and stomp on me.__Page #214

Total=10

Review This was an interesting story, that was told from to main people, Rennyn and Kendall.

Ren is on a quest to stop the Black Queens grand summoning from happening, something her family has been working on for generations. She had hoped to do it without being seen, with only the help from her brother. But things don't go as planed and she get's tangled up with others.Kendall, has the potential to be a mage, but doesn't really think she can do it.

I like the story, I'll probably check out the next book.

I'm the same! I always think I'll be in bed and noone will expect me to do anything around the house so I should get lots of reading done, but it never works out that way.

Hope you're feeling much better soon Carrie!

Melissa | 337 comments I'm almost done my book. Sorry I'm so far behind. I've had a stressful week. Son was finally diagnosed with learning disability. Found out he has below average/borderline intelligence. Which means he is not mentally retarded but that he most likely will struggle all his life. They moved him to a special education classroom. He seems happy there but I feel the guilt that every parent who goes through this does. One of the worst moments in my life was last month when he begged me not to go to school one day. He looked up at me with his blue eyes full of tears and said "they'll laugh at me". Nothing breaks your heart more than 5 year old who just wants to belong but doesn't. Fortunately so far his new class has embraced him. It's funny cause they said one of the downsides to him being in a self contained class is that they don't interact much with those without disabilities. The whole time I'm thinking no the downside is that those without disabilities never get to interact with those that do. Maybe if they interacted more there would be more understanding and less bullying.

awww, Melissa. My heart goes out to you. My oldest has a learning disability. We were able to deal with it without any special ed services through elementary school. When she got to jr high, she just couldn't keep up and begged me not to have her tested and officially diagnosed cause she didn't want to be made fun of. It nearly killed me. We ended up pulling her from school and homeschooling her until she graduated. It's hard to see your child suffer. I'm here if you want to talk :)

Melissa | 337 comments For us CJ was in a regular kindergarten class. He was fine at first but slowly he began to realize that he was different from the other kids. He was becoming withdrawn and depressed. While I'm told the other kids were nice to him I have my suspicions that they were teasing him. He didn't know what they were doing but he knew he didn't like it. His teacher denied that he was being picked on but it was obvious from the things he would say and how he would react if he would see one of his classmates. The one day I was walking him home and a little girl came up to him and was asking him "what are you?". He got very upset and told her "I'm just walking with mommy. I just want mommy." I told his teacher about the incident and how upset he was she just blew it off. So I'm glad he is out of that classroom. The woman was so snooty I don't know how she ever became a kindergarten teacher. Today is his second day in the new class but yesterday when I picked him up from school he was skipping and smiling. So I think that is a good sign.

Melissa | 337 comments Thanks everyone! Today was his second day in new class. He was happy today and I must say I love his teacher. She was just gushing over him about how sweet he is. His last teacher only ever criticized and pointed out the things he couldn't do. This one seems to be focused on what he CAN. I like that :)

message 391: by Vi (new)

This is such an important thing! Sometimes I think teachers - or anyone really - need to step back and look at themselves. Most people work best on positive reinforcement.

Carrie (icanhasbooks) I'm happy to hear things are getting better Melissa. Completely agree with Lisa Kay, people are too negative these days, rather then take the time to understand and point out the good, they are like vultures preying on who in their minds are weak. When in fact those who do the attacking are really the weak ones, because they don't have compassion.

Ok so it is hard for me to review this book because it left me sobbing. Yes sobbing. The book is about Connor who is dealing the grief over his mother who is dying of cancer. His whole life is a constant battle with bullies at school and a father who has moved on to a new family.

The illustrations are amazing! The book was heartbreaking, haunting, and emotion packed. I loved the how the monster came to life from old yew tree.

Points:
Cover: Black and white with monster on it (2)
Plot: An ancient scary monster comes to visit a boy who is struggling to deal with the impending death of his mother. (3)
Title: Monster in title (4)
Setting: Published in 2011 (6)
Bonus Word: (in my edition page 107) The monster stomped around the interior of the house, crushing every piece of furniture it could find with satisfying crashes and crunches. (1)

Total points:16
