Midu Hadi | 1693 comments yeah but i bet you kept returning to the book lol

message 252: by Vi (new)

Vi Yes but I also tended to start browsing the Malazan wiki. The first time I went into the map section, I spent nearly 30-40 mins looking at the different maps. And I'm not usually a geography lover! I'm still tempted. The world is soooo interesting.

message 253: by Midu (new)

Midu Hadi | 1693 comments it is!! :-D

message 254: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Grrr! I was hoping we would get a chance to suggest too. I understand wanting to reward fastest teams/members but it is starting to feel like we will never get to suggest.

message 255: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) I thought we'd get it this week, or rather I had hoped. The purple team must have speed readers or something. Or they absorbed the info by looking at the book lol

message 256: by Bror (Abrar) (new)

Bror (Abrar) (ab2y) | 136 comments Sorry ladies :( i'm a fast reader don't know about the others . Good luck (break a leg) next time or whatever readers say (burn a chapter)? hehe

message 257: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments "burn a chapter" LOL! I like that, Ab2y.

message 258: by Manvir (new)

Manvir (lucyheartfilia) Lol @Carrie I almost wish I could just absorb a book by looking at it. Maybe not though as it would probably take all the fun out of reading it in the first place.

I'm a speedy reader but only if I get into the story from the beginning.

message 259: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Karen if you like funny cozy mysteries one of my favorite series is the puzzle lady books by Parnell Hall the first book I think is A Clue for the Puzzle Lady (Puzzle Lady, #1) by Parnell Hall though you can read it out of order. Very amusing and I've gotten a number of people addicted to the series.

Vi Week 3 - ♬ You've Got a Friend by James Taylor (1971)

Book: The Angel Experiment (Maximum Ride, #1) by James Patterson
Rating: ★★★
Review: This is my first book by James Patterson and it was an ok read. The writing felt stilted and the characters didn't have that much dimension to them. The biggest plus is that it is a fast read. That said, I read the book only because I wanted to try Patterson. I'm not that impressed and I probably will not picking up another book of his anytime soon.

Song Link and Points?
(points copy and pasted from Carrie's review...thanks Carrie)

Cover: Dark and cloudy/stormy 2 points
Plot: Friends who are looking out for each other, spent mostly out doors, and the main character and the rest go to rescue Angel who has been taken by the erasers. 3 Points
Name: Written by James Patterson 5 Points
Setting: Journey to California then to New York 6 Points

Bonus word: Shimmy "Now we had to shimmy down instead of just jumping and landing like amazing super-duper mutants we were." Page 256 1 Point

message 269: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Should we try again this week to read fast and maybe get to pick the songs?

message 270: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) We should definitely try too. I don't think we will get points for authors name though, lol.

message 271: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments LOL you are right! I'm not really liking this weeks songs. I love Madonna but that is not the song I would have picked of hers from the 90s.

message 272: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) I do have a book by an Adele author that's 2011, but I don't think it'll fit anything else.

message 273: by Vi (new)

Vi We should definitely try to read fast this week. I can fit the years but not so much with the authors.

message 274: by Vi (new)

Vi This week's song is up early. Check it out http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Week 4 - ♬ Set Fire to the Rain by Adele (2011)

message 276: by Vi (new)

Vi Any luck? I've got only a 10 ptr so far..

message 277: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) Not really.

message 278: by Vi (new)

Vi Ok, so we had a hitch with the video and shelf listing. The video remains the same but the shelf link is THIS. Previously it was linked to a listopia.

So any suggestions for this week's shelf?

message 279: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments don't have time to look right now but will start in a bit

message 280: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) I've been looking, but nothing as jumped out as the perfect book yet.

message 281: by Vi (last edited Jan 25, 2013 05:50AM) (new)

Vi From my TBR:

Trial by Fire - Setting + Title = 10 - Not sure if it has any love triangle; though one person had it shelved under Love-Triangles.
Chasing Fire - Setting + Title + Plot + Cover = 15
A Hidden Fire - Setting + Title + Plot + Cover = 15 (Thanks, ShoSho!)

message 283: by Carrie (last edited Jan 25, 2013 05:59AM) (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) Smokeless Fire : Setting, cover, title, not sure about plot. SO at least 12 points.
The Girl of Fire and Thorns: setting, title, shelf, (plot might work) At least 11

Still looking.

message 284: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments Carrie I think plot works with The girl of Fire and thorns.

message 285: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 337 comments I'm going to go with A Hidden Fire.

message 286: by Carrie (last edited Jan 25, 2013 07:21AM) (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) Someone team teal has finished with a 16 point book, Angel Fire (Fallen Angels, #1) by Valmore Daniels and it's currently free on amazon!!

Cover(2) + Plot (3) + Title (4) + Setting (6) + Word (1) = 16 points

message 287: by Vi (new)

Vi I know the Angel Fire is shorter but I'm going with a hidden fire even though it's longer since I like the blurb better.

message 288: by Vi (new)

Vi I will be going to bed in an hour or so and tomorrow's Saturday - more cooking. I'll try to get mine done but it might be difficult. They're showing Avengers tomorrow afternoon in TV!

message 289: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) I've had both for awhile now, since Aug. So it's between those too, I'll figure out which one when I'm done the things I need to do today.

*(we will also accept the two words consecutively without the hyphen)

Cover: 2 points
(Link to lyrics) - Single body parts eg, face, lips, arm, leg. Fire. Rain. Board games or scoreboard. A fireman (needs to be in uniform... I have a weakness for firemenwomen, but that's another story.) NEITHER a black and white cover, NOR dark sky or on cover will count.

Plot: 3 points
A ménage à trois story (m/m/f only, NOT f/f/m). A story where one of the main characters is a dancer or choreographer. A story where the male lead is NOT what he seemed - he has a mistress, he's a spy, he's cheated on someone (NOT necessarily the heroine). A story where the female has just been cheated on. A song about someone who fights fires or sets fires (fireman, arson investigator, an arsonist is setting fires).

Title: 4 points
Anything that has the words SET FIRE, RAIN, or FIRE (alone) in it.

Vi Week 4- Set Fire to the Rain by Adele (2011)

Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns, #1) by Rae Carson

Book Title: The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson
Date Read: 27 January 2013
Rating: ★★★ 1/2
Review: When this book first came out, it had so much buzz. I heard mostly positive reviews and I wanted to read close to when the third book was out.

The best thing about the book was the Interesting world-building. The author really planned her world well. We are dropped in the world with little explanation and the author manages not to info-dump for the most part. I do wish the world will be built more in the next book(s).

The not-so-best thing was the use of God's will. How the God's will is interpreted differently by different factions forms the crux of the story. A very interesting concept had it been executed better. As it is, it left me a bit disappointed - especially the ending.

The close to bad thing was the characterisation was weak. All the characters are a little bit two-dimensional. Elisa as an insecure lead character is familiar but I wish her "coming-of-age" was better. It seemed like such a device - marriage to an indifferent guy 1 and attracted to a handsome, silent guy 2. Both the interests could have developed better. As it is, they don't serve that much a purpose.

All in all, an enjoyable read. I will definitely be picking up the next book in the series.

Points:
Shelf (6 ppl shelved Love-Triangle) = 1
Cover (Face on cover) = 2
Plot (Love Triangle) = 3
Title (Fire in Title) = 4
Setting (Pub in 2011) = 6
Total: 16

Vi Violet's done it again this week! Argh!

message 295: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) Wow really? I should have my book done today.

message 296: by Vi (new)

Vi Yeah!! One of these weeks I'm going to take Friday off and read. Grrrr

message 297: by Vi (new)

Vi Judy, I think you'll be asked to pick a song this week. SInce Violet was the first this week too, the mods said that five people who finished who aren't in Violet Team will be asked to pick songs.

message 298: by Vi (last edited Jan 27, 2013 06:46PM) (new)

Vi How's everybody else progress?

Karen, have you picked any book?

message 299: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) I had hoped to be finished before I went to bed tonight, but I think I'll finish in bed tonight, lol. I'll post my review in the morning, unless I'm awake enough to do it from my kindle.

Carrie (icanhasbooks) Week 4- Set Fire to the Rain by Adele (2011)

Book: Angel Fire (Fallen Angels, #1) by Valmore Daniels by Valmore Daniels
Date Read: Jan 27th
Rating: 3 Stars
Review: I enjoyed this book. I didn't love it. But I liked the idea of it.There were things that seemed a little off for me. I was kind of surprised at some of the events that happened. The author, based on this book alone, reminds of the kind where you look at the people and events and think "no one and no thing is safe", which isn't a bad thing.

Cover: Fire on the cover = 2 points
Plot The element of fire in Darcy, she can start fires using her mind.= 3 points
Title: Fire in the title = 4 points
Setting: Pub. 2011 = 6 points
" I stood at the bus stop outside the front gates of the prison and hugged my arms around my chest" = 1 point

Total: 16 points
