Isabella (All Da Ladies Luv Leo) Thomas Which were your favorite riddles?

Luna Belle Pris A box with no hinge but golden treasure inside? Eggses!

Isabella (All Da Ladies Luv Leo) Thomas Lol I love this one: "What's in my pocket?"

How about this one, not in Tolkien....

What is greater than God,
but more evil than the devil?
Poor people have it,
Rich people need it,
If you eat it, you'll die?

Ruth The answer is nothing!!!!

Celine☆ Thirty white horses upon a red hill. First they champ, then they stamp, then they stand still.

Teeth.

Ruth It was an accident that he said that

Isabella (All Da Ladies Luv Leo) Thomas What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?

Mountain!

Chris Ward I absolutely loved the riddle scene. That's probably my favorite part of the book.

Leah Tolkien knew how to create very clever riddles! Like this one:

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Dark.

I love riddles, especially when someone tells me the answer! But I think that Tolkien just "recycled" old ones, chnaging the wors or making them into poems. Anyone else know any good riddles?

I love that riddle!

And usually I find riddles too hard or complex to enjoy them sometimes but I found the ones in this book fun to try to solve.

Gianluca Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.

and

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Cally The riddle scene in the film was done really well. Gollum is a fantastic character, and Andy Serkis portrays him so well (I do know he is mostly animated, but his voice and his movements). It was a nice gap in the action to give the audience space to breathe and also didn't go on too long. The riddles were all the same as in the book, but there was more tension to it, while still being amusing.

I love those riddles!

Molly here is on, see if you can guess the answer

You give me food, I live, give me water I die.

PostScript: my friends and i always end debates with a riddle war.

Chris Tolkien was largely influenced for his 'Riddles in the Dark' chapter by the famous riddles in the Anglo-Saxon Exeter Book. You can read them here (there are nearly a hundred of them): http://www.technozen.com/exeter/

Marconi Molly, a Gremlim? haha

That part was so funny! Especially when he was talking to the other half after he asked a question "oh, I knows it!" "Shut up!" I loved the book and thought that the movie was amazing, overlooking some details,

Chris Ward #7 - a coin? :-)

Chris Ward #8 Shadow

Chris Ward I'll let someone else answer #5 and #6. Did them in class with some students back along. I love riddles but they take some explaining to Japanese kids!

Variation on a theme that has gone before, but I won't say which ....

At the head of a force of twenty five, but never involved in a fight, who am I?

Marconi 7 can be "hair"

I thought the riddle scene was amazing. I was scared they would cut off a lot of the riddles to make it shorter, as I'm sure a lot of people might find such a long scene boring, even. But I was so happy when they kept all the riddles in, excluding the fish one. ^_^

It was a great movie, though I'm not amazing at riddles and hardly even tried to guess them whilst reading the novel. Martin Freeman did a great portrayal as Bilbo, and I got butterflies in my stomach when Elijah Wood made a cameo as Frodo. I fangirled quite a bit during that scene, as I admire the guy fairly much.

Definately my favourite scene. Gollum made me both laugh and shudder at the same time, with the occasional, "Aww!" LOL. I think Bilbo was acted brilliantly!

Great! But it is annoying that you have to answer the riddles in the exact working left by the questioner - if you miss out a "the" but give the right answer, it gets marked as "wrong".

Frank It's in the answer that the true poetry in great riddles is revealed.

Mercer This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

Answer: Time!
I always thought this one seemed quite clever and it's my favorite :)

Ruth He said, "I wasn't talking to you."

Hannah Taubitz I love riddles! I went on a riddle rampage a few years ago, and this one has remained my favorite.

What do men love more than life,
fear more than death or mortal strife?
What the poor have, the rich require,
and what contented men desire.
What the miser spends and the spendthrift saves,
and all men carry to their graves.

I think it very simple, but so many people get stuck on it!
