Special Note:The section of the challenge showing your goal and name of bookshelf will NOT appear until January 1st.
I'm in! lol of course I have 8000 on my tbr(at least), anyone who wants to help me read them all...... :)
I'll do it again. Do we need to reserve a spot? I will just create a 2013 shelf for this and not add books until I mark them read.
oooo I'm Definitely in! Have so many on my TBR ... Series I have to finish PLUS series I want to start lol

Keep it something simple, like 2013 or read-2013.
You have to link the shelf to the challenge when it puts it up. I already had a 2012 shelf for books I was reading. So when I finally noticed this years challenge around OCT, I just signed up and put my 2012 shelf in the little box.
Yeah. Pretty easy. Where it says, Just enter a shelf name for this challenge, you type it in. Be sure to add a hyphen where there are spaces.
I think some people may not realise you have to create the shelf on your own bookshelves page first. Then you add that shelf name to the challenge box on our group homepage. Mine's just called 2013, and I'll add tag books once I've read them, next year. That way I know I'm contributing, without having to consciously think about it every week. :-)
Carol you are probably right. I like using the shelf for the same reason. I can just add them as I read them when I do my rating and dating.
If you want your bookshelf to appear higher up on your list, and not alphabetical, read how to do
Sticky Shelves
. Pretty neat.
I'm gonna join in too , best to add a shelf read in 2013.
I'm in as well. I have completely exceeded my expectations for this year, so will start with a more ambitious goal than I did back in Jan.
Wow Alley! That is a great goal! I'm afraid to commit to that many, given the way life gets in my way.

k...guess i'm not doing it...since I can't create my own shelf....I have tried...several times.....if you want to count my books then do..otherwise...I don't know what to tell you
Catherine wrote: "k...guess i'm not doing it...since I can't create my own shelf....I have tried...several times.....if you want to count my books then do..otherwise...I don't know what to tell you"Catherine, it's really easy to join and create a shelf. From the group's home page click in the box that asks what your goal is, fill that in. Then in the next box, which is the shelf box, type in the title you want for your shelf and if you don't already have a shelf named that, it will automatically create it for you. Then you just need to remember to add your books to that shelf when you finish them.

If you still don't understand, after Miss Susan's explaination, then I'll be happy to walk you through it every step of the way.
The trick is adding that hyphen, if your shelf have more than one word.
Hey Catherine, we're all so eager to help you! I'm joininig the list to see if one of us is able to provide you with the lightbulb moment (let it be me!!!)I've had a look at your bookshelves, you've got a great range of shelves on your "My Books" page! How did you create those shelves? All you need to do is create another one like that, except instead of calling it "very-british-humour" (and yes, I had a giggle at that one) you can just call it "2013" or "read-in-2013".
Here's the walk-through:
1. From whichever page on Goodreads you're on, click on the My Books link at the top of the page that looks like this:

2. This will take you to your bookshelves page. The next step is to click on the word edit next to the "Bookshelves" title, like this:

3. This will take you to a page with a list of all your shelves and editing options for them. At the top of the page, it should say "My Profile > My Books > Edit Shelves".
a) Now you need to scroll to the bottom of this page.
b) Here you will see a small text box with the words "Add Shelf" next to it, like this:

c)Add the name of the shelf you want to create. You could call it "Read in 2013" or just "2013" like in the example below. Just remember, if you put in more than one word (ie. you use the spacebar), Goodreads will convert the spaces into hyphens for your shelf name. So "Read in 2013" will become "read-in-2013" in your bookshelves list. My advice is to keep it easy and just stick to one word or number, like this:

Now, you've created your shelf, yaay you! Only one more step to go. You just need to link that shelf to our challenge in this group and you're all set. Here's how you do that:
1. Go to our group's homepage. The one with the star banner and the lady in blue reading next to a window right at the top. Scroll down til you get to the challenges box.
2.

Put in the number of books you want to aim for this year, and then add the shelf name exactly as it appears in your bookshelves list. Click on Save.
That's it, you're done.
Did that work, did it, did it? huh?

Goal? Our group goal is 10,000 books in the year 2013. Thus, the name: When? Start Date: 00:01 on January 1, 2013 until December 31, 2013.

How?: For additional help in understanding how to join, check out instuctions under “GoodReads How To...” “Join a Featured Group Challenge.” This requires adding a specific bookshelf to your bookshelves. Remember, if your bookshelf has more than one word, you must add a HYPHEN in between.
