I agree-in fact in my vision it isnt anything that long.
Unless of course it's Culture. That is the exception to any rule.

that's another that i've been meaning to read. and unlike the Culture series (many of which i've read), i've read 0 of the Vorkosigan saga.

I would nominate any of Peter F. Hamilton's series, especially the Commonwealth series, but all of them are awesome!

I'd love to do a series read. I've read all of Miles Vorkosigan, and I'd love to read it again with you guys.

I've got a bunch of free ebook certs for Baen, so I certainly have no objection to going with Bujold's Vorkosigan stuff. Certainly sounds interesting enough.

LOVE me some Peter F Hamilton, as Lane mentioned but since I've read the Commonwealth stuff, I'd probably greedily lean towards The Reality Dysfunction/Night's Dawn series

i've read the Night's Dawn series and thought it was excellent. would not mind reading it again.
looks like we have a few suggestions so far. i think i will open up a nominations thread so folks can nominate whatever else comes to mind.

and it's Vorkosigan at the last second!

It's great fun!
Any chance of starting with Shards of Honour?
Any chance of starting with Shards of Honour? I've got Cordelia's Honor and I'd hate to have to skip the first two chronological books in the series just to get to the first Miles book.
Purely selfish I know, but my OCD would kill me if we skipped them.
Bernard Cornwells Saxon Chronicles. Each book is a stand alone, but they are a series of 6 books. Best read I had in 2012...

Richard, that is my preference as well. we will put it to a poll! although either way i plan on reading the first 2 chronological books. the points in favor of skipping the first two are (1) they don't deal with Miles directly and (2) #3 - the first actual Miles novel - is available for free. those are pretty good points... which is why we will be putting it to a vote.

Yes-- read the books Chronologically-- they're a great way to be introduced to this fabulous universe!

So Marjorie made some good points re. where to start the series read (the ones I noted above in msg 20)... but because another group - Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Club - has chosen that book for their Feb group read, we'll just start with the first chronological book in the series, Shards of Honour. And so skip the poll. I hate repeating the group reads of other groups.

sorry Alice, i forgot to close this thread! the group read has already been chosen through a poll last month. it was a tight race. Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga won. the series read will start in March with The Warrior's Apprentice. i hope you will join us.

We would have a nomination and voting to pick a series, and that would replace the random read for the duration of the series....
Any interest? Thoughts? Better ideas?
