Inspired by the Peter Pan thread -- a "retelling with a dark or horror twist" might be a fun category.
And maybe "fairy tale mash-up" (i.e. story with elements of several/many tales in it.)
Perhaps "well-known anthology"? (ex. Arabian Nights, or Grimms, Anderson, Calvino, Perrault?)
I'm not opposed to countries either. I've had a good (but surprisingly difficult) time this year looking for novel-length retellings of non-European tales.

I would be all for African fairy tales, since I have been exposed to so few.In all honesty, I like most the ideas presented.
I like the well-known anthology idea. I'm kind of hunting for an excuse to read some of Andrew Lang's books, though.
Ooh, goodie...
I'm making it one of my New Year's resolutions to read Anderson and Calvino's collections.

I should note that traditional collection on the challenge simply means a collection of traditional tales. Anything by Grimm or Andersen would count but so would collections by Jane Yolen, Briggs, those in the Panetheon series, Lang etc.
