Heena Rathore Rathore-Pardeshi (heenarathore) Hi, I'm Heena. I absolutely love King's books. Though I started reading his books this year itself, I've come to not only like his books but I really love his writing style. I've read only a handful (Cell, Just After Sunset, Full Dark No Stars and Cujo) but I'm planning to read all his books asap!

Shariton - nice to meet someone who loves Rose Madder. One of my favorites, and very scary. Glad you're here. I almost hesitate to recommend Gerald's Game because it's so damn tense. But there are a lot of similarities with Rose, I think. You may enjoy it.

Heena - King's style is so damn friendly that I can plow through those thousand page book without any problems. If you really like a good scare (as in full dark) try IT. Long and terrifying but that friendly voice is always there.

Hey: Scarlette - Welcome. Glad you're here. When you came back to King, which novels brought you back and what are you reading now?

message 811: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Gwynne | 2 comments Hey Nick,

Weirdly, I got back into reading Stephen King because I watched 1408 and I remembered how much I loved the story so I started to pick them up again. Currently reading Cell, seeing as I remember I loved that previously. After I finish that I am going to re-read The Stand and then I am going to go on to The Shining, which is one book I have never read before.

What are you currently reading?

I'm getting deeply into the audio book of IT - which is really terrific, better than when I read it the first time a few years ago. Also, reading some scripts as a judge in a film festival, also a romance, The Shadow Queen recommended by goodreads friend H, Strigoi, recommended by Goodreads friend Linda Todd, and will start (as soon as I get a chance) The Things They Carried, a vietnam war epoch. I also feel I should re-read my least favorite King book, Desperation. Want to give it another chance.

William Hutto | 2 comments Hi, Bill here have read almost everything written by Mr. King but would like to reread a few. Also haven't read Mr. Mercedes yet so thought I would give this group a try. Just joined the S.K. recommends group and already belonged to Sword and Laser.

Michael Jensen (michaeljensen) | 46 comments Just discovered this group after being over on the Horror Afficiando's group for the past year. I discovered King when I was a teenager and fell in love with books like The Stand, Salem's Lot, and so forth. King is the writer I cite as being most influential in my own work and as being the writer I most admire. Right now I'm rereading The Stand with the additional 400 pages added in and marveling both at King's prose, as well as his insight to his characters, especially familial relationships. The scene where Larry Underwood's mother explains that she loves him, but that he's a "taker" was wonderfully written and powerfully explained so much about both characters. Just loved it!

Anyway, hi!

message 816: by Malina (new)

Malina | 304 comments Welcome Michael! I love The Stand, have read it a few times as well :)

message 817: by Nick (new)

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Michael -

I agree with you on King's ability to see into the souls of his characters. I'm amazed by his insights into teenage familial relationships in books like Christine and The Body and IT. Though in the latter it's what's going on between the kids, "the loosers", that's most amazing.

message 819: by Michael (new)

Michael Jensen (michaeljensen) | 46 comments I'm not a huge fantasy fan, so I've steered clear of the Dark Tower stuff. Would folks still recommend it even for non-fantasy fans?

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Michael wrote: "I'm not a huge fantasy fan, so I've steered clear of the Dark Tower stuff. Would folks still recommend it even for non-fantasy fans?"

Michael, I'd give it a try. Though the best books are (IMHO) in the middle of the series. You do have to read them in order, and because some are nearly a thousand pages long it's quite an undertaking. But still worth it, for me anyway.

message 821: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (queenjaneapproximately) Hi everyone,

I can't believe I never noticed this group before. I've been a Stephen King addict since I read Bag of Bones on vacation when I was 12. (Some highly inappropriate material for a 12 year old, by the way)

My top 5 favorites are:
(this is a really hard choice because really, I love almost everything I've read of his)
- The Green Mile
- Gerald's Game
- Bag of Bones
- It
- Different Seasons

I'm two books in to The Dark Tower, and I love it. I'm trying to take them slow, since I'm anticipating one hell of a book hangover once they're over.

Nice to see so many people with the same obsessions as me!

Thanks, Nick, but if some are a thousand pages long they are going to have to wait. I've already got a list of books a mile long to read and I'm really trying to focus on horror since that is the genre I'm writing. But I do love King (rereading The Stand right now) so I will get to it eventually!

Matthew (mphel005) Hey Everyone! My name is Matthew and I am really a newbie when it comes to Stephen King. When I was younger, I used to watch a lot of Stephen King's movies or miniseries without ever realizing that they were books. Ever since I've joined Goodreads about 2 years ago, my reading habits have improved tremendously.

My first attempted at Stephen King was 11/22/63 and stopped reading it after 250 pages because school distracted me from getting interested in progressing the novel. But my first completed book of Stephen King is Joyland. I absolutely adored it and got hooked on the bag wagon.

The other books that I read are American Vampire, 'Salem's Lot, and Carrie. Carrie is my all time favorite so far. I have so any of his books in hardcover and trying my hardest to read at least one book of his every month. I am currently reading Under the Dome.

I cannot believe that theres a group for Stephen King and I am so excited to join this group. I cannot wait to read Mr. Mercedes next month!

message 825: by Malina (new)

Malina | 304 comments Welcome Matthew! How exciting to be reading King for the first time. I will recommend you finish 11/22/63 it is fabulous.
Under the Dome is also great, just don't watch the tv series which IMO is awful.

Hey Margaret, welcome. Checked out your page. See you'e from Athens. My sister in law is originally from Athens, though she's been in the US for quite a while. She still doesn't understand Mr. King. Glad you do... and glad to see his work is so internationally valued.

message 829: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 76 comments Hi Nick. Glad to be friends. I live in Athens and I am a doctor (endocrinologist ).I m little bit new in goodreads. I've been reading all my life. Loved the way you put it. Everything that s well written. From romance to thriller what matters is the way the writer tells the story. And his majesty the King sure knows how to do it. I m about to read mr Mersedes. In Greece it will be released
in December , but it is already here in English so although I prefer to read in translation , it is a long time to wait and I ll probably get it in English. Everyone here is reading it, and yes King is very popular in Greece . Give my best to your sister in low.

message 830: by Dan (new)

Dan Hi everyone. I'm Dan. I started reading King in the mid 1980s. I can't think of any author who resonates with me as well as King does. Love the characters, love the storytelling. King, without question, is the #1 reason I became a horror author.

I hope to get to know all of you!

message 831: by Michele (new)

Michele (micheleaz) | 12 comments Hi everyone! I am a new Stephen King fan-- just getting into his books within the last year. I avoided the books for a long time as I had pigeon holed him into "horror", which I am not a huge fan. My first book that I read of his was 11/22/63, which was a great introduction. With this book I realized that he was much much more than just horror and then I was hooked. I then read Carrie, The Stand,It, The Shining and Dr Sleep. I am currently reading Skeleton Crew. It is interesting-- I see alot of parallels in his books and his commentary on evil.

message 832: by Margaret (new)

Thanks Dr. Margaret, there's a buddy read of Mr. Mercedes about to start here on Sept 1. People read and discuss the book as they go along. You should check that out.

message 835: by Gunnhildur (new)

Gunnhildur Rúnarsdóttir (grafarholt) | 2 comments I've been a fan since I was a teenager and love most of what I've read by him. I have a few favorites both short stories and novels that I keep reading over and over again.

I was sad like most of his fans when he announced after his accident that once he finished writing The Dark Tower series he would retire. I thought that was it, no more sleepless nights reading just a few more paragraphs then a couple of more pages ending in finishing the book.

After the last of The Dark Tower books came out I stopped keeping track of him, I thought he was retired. To my delight I discovered he was still writing and I read Cell, it was really bad and it made me not interested in reading anything new by him. Well someone gave me Under the Dome which I liked so I think I'll give him another chance.

Any suggestions on where to start.

Hi. My first Stephen King book was 11/22/63 (which is one of his newer books). Have you read this one? I thought it was excellent-- good characters and I am always a sucker for a time travel story :)

I haven't read it and I do love time travel, thank you for the suggestion.

message 838: by Kirstie (new)

Kirstie (kenglish95) Hi I'm Kirstie and I have read very little Stephen King but hope to get into him soon. So far all I have read of his is the comic he co wrote American Vampire. I tried reading Carrie once but couldn't get into it. I plan to read The Stand soon as I have heard it's very character driven and that's my favorite kind of book. If you have any character driven Stephen King recommendations please say.

I have decided to try and get into King after reading some of his son Joe's work and loving it. Many people compare them both and I can't get enough of Hill's work just now.

Carrie Arnold-wirick | 21 comments I agree 11/23/63 AMAZING!!!!

message 841: by Jim (new)

Jim Peterson | 10 comments Kirstie,

Stephen King is basically always character-driven. The Stand is probably the best example, but also The Green Mile and the Bachman books. IT would definitely fall in that category, though I've yet to read it.

message 842: by Yvette (new)

Yvette Franks (staycejo) | 4 comments Hello. I received my first Stephen King book when I was 11, The Dead Zone. I was hooked! I have read most of his books. I don't have some e-books because they just pop up when i'm not looking! I also love Joe Hill's books. He really took after his dad. My daughter has read a couple of his books but most are just over her head.( She loves the movies)
