Ross | 1 comments Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone's read a really scary sword or laser book?

I've read a few tense ones but I'm looking for that special feeling where after reading you really don't want to go downstairs and yes... that noise was only the boiler turning off... O.o

I'd love to get everyone's thoughts on this :)

Eric Gardner | 113 comments I'm interested and maybe it's just my super violent media saturated youth but is there even such a thing as a scary book? I think The Painted Bird was the last thing to scare me and that's only because I read it when I was waaaaaay too young.

I would like it in the SFF genre too, but can I at least get it in the "horror" genre please.

Katrina | 32 comments Hmm, I don't know if this is "scary" but its the closest thing I've read. For that matter I'm not sure if it is SFF... At least in my mind it sort of defies the attempt to define or explain it. House of Leaves This is a book you have to have a dead tree version of, I'm not sure if they even have ebooks for it (but I seriously doubt it). The way it is written on the page is very important and not easily translatable to an electronic format (except maybe pdf or something image based).

I guess it did scare me a bit and it definitley made me feel a bit crazy and confused. Can't really explain any better than that, but you should definitley read it.

Katrina | 32 comments I just re-read my above post and realized that even trying to talk about that book makes me sound like a ninny. Such is life.

Katrina | 32 comments Here, a link to a review. He captures better what I was trying to say (very ineffectively) about how this book gets under your skin. http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Ian Roberts | 143 comments Hyperion and the shrike is the sci fi that's creeped me out the most one of the reasons I love it

Yep, read this one, "Alive", "Lord of the Flies" and "Helter Skelter" all before sixth grade...yea, I had ameeting with the district behaviorist and my parents when a teacher saw what I had in my backpack....

Rik | 777 comments A lot of Clive Barker books are basically urban fantasy with some horror elements. Weaveworld and Imagica for instance are pure urban fantasy with magic and other fantasy elements (along with some horror).

Daran | 599 comments Mythago Wood gave me the creeps. I kept expecting horrible things to be watching me from the tree outside my window.

This might be on the nose, but Stephen Kin's The Mist is the scariest thing I've ever read. psychological horror and monsters.
