Katherine (katdylan) Week 6

Item Called: Eyes
Book: Eye of the Storm
Author: Monette Michaels
Rating: 3 Stars
Date read: 01/23/2013

Review:
This is my first read by Monette Michaels, and I'm not sure yet what to think about.
There's a really nice storyline, and I can't wait to know more about these characters. I just love a good family series, and Eye of the Storm sucked me right in.
Ren Maddox is the chief of SSI, an security agency. He and a few friends are at Argentina for a meeting, but they don't know it's a trap to kill them all. In comes Keely, she's THE SHIT. This girl kicks MAJOR ass. She's been trained by the best in the military, which include all of her brothers and dad. She's the girl to call when you are in trouble.
Her brother is with Ren in Argentina, and she goes to save them all. But it doesn't end there. They want Keely and all the other dead, and those are just some of the enemies they'll find in this journey. Now they'll have to do anything to catch those bad guys and stay alive.

I had a few issues with the main character, Ren. He was way too over, over, over the top. Keely was a trained woman, and could hold herself in any kind of fight. She proved it time and time again. But Ren insisted, demanded to treat her as a crystal glass, which I HATED. I found really weird how quickly in love they fell. It just wasn't right. From day one they were making promises of forever and I just couldn't buy any of it.
On the other side, Monette Michaels has a really cool tone and I laughed out loud so many times. It's a 3 star for me, since I really liked the plot, but couldn't stand a character.

Katherine (katdylan) Week 7

Item Called: Shoulder
Book: Captive Travelers
Author: Candace Smith
Rating: 4 Stars
Date read: 01/18/2013
Captive Travelers by Candace Smith

Quick Review:
I'm not quite sure what to say about this book. I really liked. Captive Travelers tells the story of 3 friends being wronged and sent to a place they never new it even existed. Kayla used to date a half indian boy, and when she breaks up with him, his grandmother is not happy. And for this, she tricks Kayla and her friends Cici and Aubrey to go on a travel to a mystical place. The three girls are sent to an spiritual world. And even worse, they soon learn they are there to be punished by Indian Warriors. Can it be true?

At first when we get to read the part of the girls before the spiritual world, and how they get to end there, and when the Indians shows up, it's frightening. They are not just warriors, they are savages. Caveman with horses, this is with I believed. But this book felt like it was a two part story. The Before they arriving the Tribe, and the after. Things change, and we start seeing things differently. Even though it was an PNR, Indian book, I felt undertones of masked BDSM that helped to strengthen the plot.

I really liked this book. It was a tad long and very detailed, this author haven't forgot about anything. I look forward to reading another works from Candace Smith.

Turtlecollector Dennis It has taken me almost a week to finish this book. I had a trip to my sister's for two different birthday celebrations(mine and my nephew's) over the 3 day weekend, then I bought the Rock Chick series. Normally, I do not use my ereader much since I still prefer to have an actual book in hand, but I have had a hard time putting my device down. This series is so much fun and I am halfway through the 4th one already. I will be back later to post my review since I am at work right now.

I was planning to read them this year and your reviews of the first two had me buying them earlier than planned. I am going to be so disappointed when I have finished the first seven, although I have heard there will be a eighth one coming. They are very addictive.

Turtlecollector Dennis Week 8: Emergency vehicle

Darkness, My Old Friend by Lisa Unger by Lisa Unger
read 1/24/13 - 3 stars

This is the second book about The Hollows and retired cop trying to find where he fits now. The main plot has several subplots connecting both in the present and from the past in the case of a missing woman who disappeared years ago and a few troubled teens in the present. It is and interesting series but I like her Ridley Jones series better so far.

Items claimed:

1. emergency vehicle: ambulance pg 343
"...beside her at the ambulance while they..."

2. necklace: locket pg 335
"...heart-shaped locket at her neck."

3. nose pg 67
"...rubbed at the bridge of her nose."

Glad I could get you hooked on them. lol I'm gonna be bummed when I finish too, but the eighth shouldn't be far behind.

Happy B-day, Kirstin! :)

I love paper books too, TC, but sometimes an ereader it's so much easier.

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) Ok, Dyllan I just wanted to let you know for now I am going to ignore post 100 on the point claim thread.

The uncalled items you will get points for when you submit for the called items. You can't get points for the called items until the whole team has read them. So until you've submitted for Eyes the posts for Cake and Snow won't count.

I could give you the points for emergency vehicle but you linked to the original posts where you gals claimed it as a extra item. If I use those posts you won't get credit for the books read this past week, and you won't get credit for the extra items claimed this week.

Once everyone has read a emergency vehicle this week, repost and link to those new posts to get credit for all your items.

message 213: by Dawn (Kat N Hat) (new)

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) Yeah ok so disreguard the first part of that last post. I see the next page you did claim eyes. I'll be back after I update.

message 214: by Dawn (Kat N Hat) (new)

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) Ok, points awarded for Cake, Eyes, Snow, Bra, Wind, Shoulder, Sky, and Fruit.

Let me know if I missed something. You are now up to 17 points.

message 215: by Katherine (last edited Jan 25, 2013 10:41AM) (new)

Katherine (katdylan) Dawn, I thought we claimed twice if it was already claimed as an uncalled item. Ignore that post then, and when we've all read I'll repost.

message 216: by Paris (last edited Jan 25, 2013 11:39AM) (new)

Paris (pah13) I'll be done with my emergency vehicle book today.

And I don't know exactly what I'll read for rainbow, but it will be my last book for this round.

ETA: Picked Exquisite (Exquisite, #1) by Ella Frank

Turtlecollector Dennis Please disregard my previous post for this week. I am changing my book for emergency vehicle since the book I read last night also has moonlight in it.

Week 8: Emergency vehicle

Rock Chick Renegade bu Kristen Ashley
read 1/24/13 - 4 stars

I really love this series. This book has Jules (or Law) as a vigilante social worker going up against the drug dealers in protection of her kids. She sticks mostly to small pranks but does take down a couple of big guys herself. Like the other books in the series, her hot guy, Vance does not leave much to chance and hooks up with her fast. So far, this book had the worst injuries by the main characters and a little more violence than the others.

Items claimed:

emergency vehicle: ambulance loc 299/1016
"...need to call an ambulance..."

moonlight loc 64/1016
"...taking a moonlight stroll..."

necklace loc 312/1016
"...gave me a diamond necklace..."

nose loc 365/1016
"She scrunched her nose."

Paris (pah13) Week 8 - Emergency Vehicle

Rock Chick Redemption (Rock Chick, #3) by Kristen Ashley by Kristen Ashley
Finished: 1/25/2013
Rating: ★★★★★

These books are just so much fun and then men of Denver…they really don’t f--- around; which totally makes me want to move to Denver, or at least Kristen Ashley’s version of Denver. The women are feisty, a little crazy and a ton of fun. The men are hot, demanding, and did I mention hot? There never seems to be a dull moment for any of the characters whether it’s the main couple or those around them.

I loved the introduction of Roxie and how her and Hank interacted with each other. I look forward to seeing more of them. I also like that Roxie is Tex’s niece. It’s nice to see Tex be developed more and that’s happening a lot between the introduction of his family and the possibility of a relationship between him and Jet’s mom Nancy. Also coming into the mix with Roxie are her parents, who were embarrassingly hilarious and her best friend Annette and her man Jason. Annette owns a head shop called Head in Chicago and plans on moving to Denver to open a new Head shop and strip to Bob Marley at Smithie’s. She will also be a ton of fun to watch over the next few books.

The cast of characters in these books are enough to keep me reading, but then you add in a hot relationship and crazy bullet flying action and I’m totally hooked. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Emergency Vehicle: Ambulance "I was thinking Billy had gotten away again, visions of him bursting out of the back of the ambulance still on the run and after me, filling my head." Location 7723
Body Part:Tail: "Shamus did as he was told and I heard his tail sweeping the floor with excitement." Location 1683
Weather: Rain "Billy was cowerin to try and protect himself from my raining blows." Location 4759
Clothing: Hood "A man wearing full ghoul makeup and a big hooded black cloak was staning in front of the door, glaring at us, completly "in character"." Location 4647

Paris (pah13) Week 9 - Rainbow

Exquisite (Exquisite, #1) by Ella Frank by Ella Frank
Finished: 1/26/2013
Rating: ★★★★★

This is definitely not a book you should read at work. It’s hot and heartbreaking and heartwarming and just not good for your emotional wellbeing if you have to be around other people. With that being said, Exquisite has jumped onto my favorite romances list, which I honestly never thought I’d have. For the longest time any book I read had to have a paranormal element to it, relationships and romance were fine, but only if there were vampires or werewolves or some other aspect keeping it from straight up romance. Now I find myself pushing those urban fantasy and even the paranormal romance books further down the list for plain old hot romances. I can’t seem to get enough of the drama, the back and forth that tears at my heart like I was one of the characters in the book. It doesn’t even bother me that I pretty much know how things are going to end (HEA), I still panic when things inevitably go wrong.

Throughout this book, I felt like I was in the middle of Mason and Lena’s relationship. I was pissed when they were pissed, I was heartbroken when they were heartbroken, I was hot and bothered when they were hot and bothered. I can see myself reading this over and over again in the future. I loved Mason and want one of my own and it was so great to see Lena grow throughout the book. There are so many swoonworthy moments in this book; moments that make me rethink my life as a single gal.

Goodreads show this as being the first book in the series and I have a feeling that future books might be the love story of Mason’s sister Rachel and then perhaps Lena’s best friend Shelly will get a chance to find her Mr. Right. No matter who the books are about, Ella Frank has found a devoted reader in me. I can’t wait!

Weather: Rainbow "Lena reached out and spun the rainbow pinwheel was stuck in one of the pots of colorful tulips." Location 2366
Misc: Paper "'She couldn't just write her name on paper but on the crotch of her panties.'" Location 582
Body Part: Toe "She'd been putting an order in for a patient who'd broken her toe while making a not-so-graceful landing from a piggyback ride." Location 779

Turtlecollector Dennis Week 9 - Rainbow

An Ocean in Iowa by Peter Hedges by Peter Hedges
Read 1/27/13 - 2 stars

This was an odd book about a boy who turns 7 and then his mother deserts the family. The book covers the year until he turns eight and towards the end there were a couple of disturbing events. At the beginning of the book I was sympathetic to the mother and didn't like the father but that switched by the end of the book. I probably wouldn't have read this book, but I needed a book set in Iowa.

Items claimed:

Rainbow pg 29-
"...a rainbow of colors..."

Musical instrument: piano pg 70
"...he would play the piano..."

page 89 - ...in every color of the rainbow...
Necklace - page 34 - I see the necklace of Keloids...
Nose - page 41 - He's kept his nose clean...
Shelf - page 5 - He stands near a shelf...

Reading this book, i had mixed feelings about it. First i had hard time connecting to the story, but the more i read, i could ease into the story and i started liking the characters. I loved that the world was different and how people had different powers, like bringing luck or taking it. In the end it was fascinating first book and i can't wait to continue the series.
