Book: This Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost
Completed: 17/12/2012
Rating: 4 Stars
Review: This Side of the Grave was an enjoyable continuation of the Night Huntress series and despite the fact that this book has been on my To-Read list for quite some time before I finally got around to reading it was actually surprisingly easy to get re-absorbed into the current plotline. However, although there were some absolutely classical scenes in This Side of the Grave it did at times feel like it was missing some of spark from the earlier books. I will still continue with this series but despite enjoying This Side of the Grave I am not in any rush to read One Grave at a Time.
Items Claimed:
*Weather-““He’s not a plant that I can just stick on a ledge near the sunshine, Bones!””
Clothing-“Or the faint outlines on my back underneath my top as something more than a strapless bra.”
Body Parts-“Then I glanced at Bones’s profile, noting his curly hair, richly defined cheekbones, dark brows, and lips that were firm enough to be masculine and full enough to be sinful.”
Misc-“I went onto our wraparound front porch, staring up at the sky to try and clear my head.”

I've had a slow reading week this past week, and am going away in a couple of days, but I'm thinking I'll be able to catch-up pretty easily when I get back. I keep looking at the scoreboard on the spreadsheet and seeing us all blanks is a little disappointing but I have fingers crossed that we'll make a mad dash at the end..! :-)
Maybe you could change that for next round though, so that each person's score is up irrespective of team play? I think for a very competitive team, the current system would act as a great motivator, but for a more laid-back team it may be a little de-motivating for the quicker readers. I might be the only one thinking this way, though, so take it with a grain of salt...

I know how you feel and it isn't my team. Having a team captain post the completed teams points was a suggestion from the last few rounds. So far it isn't making much of a diference to me, just more work and slower to get points for you all. I may take it out and go back to the old way for the next round.
You just have to remember you get the same points if you get them one or two a week or later six or seven a week. It is the end game that matters not how fast you got the points.
On other notes, I've also sent Kim a pm. It doesn't look like she's been on this thread since before the game started. She has been on GR though. So it is up to you all if you want to remove her and go back to a team of 4.

Review:
This book started off great and was a fun read. The character of The Doctor (as played by Matt Smith) was captured nearly perfectly and I wish they would make this into an episode. In fact, I think it would be even more enjoyable as an actual episode, because as a book it fell just a little flat. The ending is what was really boring. It became very complicated and way too confusing. I know that the author was trying to clear everything up, but I think it would have been better had it not been explained because some parts were never explain clearly and I felt that it left you hanging. Overall, I liked this book and had it not been so confusing and predictable at the end I'm sure I would have loved it. If you are a fan of Doctor Who you should like this book.

Read:The Winds of Sonoma by Nikki Arana
Read from December 20 to 21, 2012

Review:
Winds of Sonoma was an interesting book. I enjoyed learning that this story was based on the author's life, it's always nice when a book is based on a true story!
I felt at times the story took the side of illegals too much and made it sound like people who support deportation were immoral or unchristian, which I don't believe at all.
It was hard at times to understand parts of the book, because phrases were in Spanish. Which at first help me to see how the main character, Angelica, had a hard time understanding Antonio. However, once she started to understand him more easily I think it should have been translated - not everyone knows Spanish! Even though I think I got the gist of it, I found it annoying to not know for sure.
The ending was good, but SO predictable! While I overall I enjoyed this book, I'm not sure whether or not I will be reading the next book in this series.
Items claiming:
Weather - Sunshine: "The sunlight played across her dark hair and lit her beautiful face." (page 120)
Clothing - Glasses: "She dug in her purse for her sunglasses." (page 43)
Body Parts - Tail: "And you know, I love seeing the horses in the pastures, racing around with their tails held high, tossing their heads" (page 74)
Misc. - Musical Instrument: "A guitar. It felt light in her hands." (page 236)

Book: Fixer-Uppers by Cynthianna
Finished: 22-12-12

Review: This book was my first by this author. I found the story held a lot of promise; the characters faced realistic financial challenges, and unlike so many other romances, this story deals with them in an every-day way that is believable and familiar to most people. Where this story lacked for me, was in direction. I felt the plot was a little ambiguous, more a meandering of scenes, especially towards the end, where it started to drag. The dialogue was wooden at times.
All in all, I look forward to seeing some future works by this author, to see if she can deliver on the sweet romance promise so evident at the beginning of this book.
Weather: SUNSHINE - Pg 20. "...a warm ray of sunshine had somehow melted away the icy numbness he had felt since the day Hayley had dumped him,"
Clothing: SOCK - Pg 34. '"I understand," she said, taking the chair beside him and absentmindedly folding his socks.'
Body Part: TOE - Pg 152. "She kicked the switch off with a toe, carefully avoiding the vacuum cord..."
Misc: BIKE - Pg 76. '"My bike!" Cassie cried, stepping out from behind the screen door into the garage...'"

Review:
This was one of the better Doctor Who novels I've read and was a very enjoyable story throughout. The author did an amazing job of capturing the Doctor's character, it was David Tennant's Doctor exactly! However, Martha's character needed some of work, it mostly seemed like her, but there were quite a few times it didn't. Some parts of the story seemed a bit jumbled, hence the four-star rating. Overall, I really like this novel and would recommend it to fans of Doctor Who.
Items claiming:
Weather - Lightning: On the cover
Clothing - Necklace: On the cover
Body Parts - Bone: On the cover
Misc. - Emergency Vehicle: "I think you'd better call an ambulance!" (page 176)

Read:The Story of Martha by Dan Abnett
Read from December 24 to 25, 2012

Review:
For all those wondering what Martha's journey was like during her year of travelling the earth, this book helps a little. It was an enjoyable read, a little annoying at times but still good. However, it definitely isn't a must read, as I think the show explained what she did during this year very well and this book didn't add much to it in my opinion. I liked how this book starts and ends with the opening scene from Last of the Time Lords.
The Story of Martha is broken up into nine parts - five parts about Martha's travels and four parts the stories that Martha tells. I have to say that the stories Martha tells people are kind of dull and way too short to be convincing. If I was hearing them from her having no prior knowledge of the Doctor, as these people are, they wouldn't convince me of his importance at all.
Items claiming:
Weather - Mist/Fog: "They'd waited at Dunkirk for two days, hoping for fog, but it was unseasonably clear, as if something was screwing with the weather patterns." (page 12)
Clothing - Boots: "Getting your boots dusty for a change, ma'am" (page 27)
Body Parts - Elbow: "Martha veered left, crying out when she banged her elbow as she took the turn too quickly" (page 99)
Misc. - Fruit: "They hurtled towards the west door, knocking over stacked cartons of tinned fruit." (page 74)

I sent her a PM awhile ago as well and she didn't respond back to me or leave a comment here. Not only is it kind of frustrating to be one of the only teams without a point, but to me it's kind of rude to leave your team in the dark as to why you haven't posted a review in over a month. I would understand it if she was busy and wasn't on Goodreads for awhile, but she was on here Christmas eve and several times before that. I would also understand if she was so busy she hasn't had the time to finish a book, but it looks as though she has finished a couple of books this month, and even if this was the case I think she should check in once in awhile to let her team know that she's aware of the next item called. It feels as though she's ignoring this thread and I don't know why. So, I would like to go back to a team of four...what do you guys want to do?

Megan, I'm on holidays in Sydney at the moment, still reading but I won't post reviews till I'm back home next week. I'll catch up no worries.

Rating: ★★★✩✩
Review: I had to re-start the first 6 chapters of this so I could count it for a few 2013 challenges, so it did feel like it dragged, but all in all a sweet historical romance. Lucifer was not as dominant as some of the previous Cynster men have seemed to be, and I thought Phyllida took some stupid risks when she was supposed to be mature and intelligent. Still, I'm invested with this series, and look forward to reading the next in line.

Book: The Memory of You by Laurie Kellogg
Completed: 1/01/2013
Rating: 2 Stars
Review: The Memory of You was a disappointing read as I had high expectations that it would be an interesting novel when I began it. The main flaw of the novel was the main character, known as either Matt Or Mac, who was extremely annoying and controlling. Although he claimed to want Abby to be happy he destroyed her relationship with her fiance, constantly thought that if she didn't argee with something he stated that he could always reveal his identity to get his way and most importantly ignored Abby's opinions on multiple matters and did whatever he thought was best. This was especially apparent with their son who Abby had raised on her own as he was constantly undermining her parenting and claiming that despite her being extremely broke that she was holding her son back if she didn't immediately hire an expensive and well known piano teacher. Also everyone's reactions to his deception were too relaxed and calm at least one person should have been upset that he lied and pretended to be someone else.
Items Claimed:
Misc- "“There should be a ream of typing paper and a package of lined writing pads on the shelf in your closet,”"
Weather- "It mystified him that the heady feeling of whizzing along the open highway with the wind in his face managed to filter through his subconscious even though he couldn’t recall a freaking thing about his life or family."
Clothing- "When he peered pointedly at the paunch hanging over Robert’s belt, her fiancé had the good grace to look abashed."
*Body Parts- "Still, his ribcage stood out so prominently she could count each bone."

Book: Alpha by Rachel Vincent
Completed: 8/01/2013
Rating: 4 Stars
Review: Alpha was an excellent conclusion to the Shifter series. It was fast paced and the tension, which was apparent throughout the book as the final battle drew near, didn’t feel generated. Also the outcome of the love triangle is written in such a way that it is honestly impossible to predict throughout the novel until the very last chapter who Faythe will end up with. The only real complain I have with the novel is that I would have liked to have seen a bit more about what happened next at the end as the ending felt like it happened a bit too suddenly after the final battle.
Items Claimed:
Misc- “All eyes were on him—more than half the gazes openly hostile—as he handed several folded sheets of paper to my dad.”
Weather- “My father sighed as we turned toward our cabin, the path lit only by cold, white moonlight.”
Clothing- “My father took off his glasses to polish them on the tail of the shirt showing through his open coat.”
*Body Parts- “But the look in his eyes as his gaze roamed south of mine belied his casual zeal.”

Book: My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent
Completed: 9/01/2013
Rating: 4 Stars
Review: My Soul to Take was a good fast read that introduced the characters and the concept of the Soul Screamers series well. Although it wasn’t a novel that really stood out, and it wasn’t as good as Rachel Vincent’s Shifters series, it was still a good book and I will definitely be checking out the second book in series to see what happens next with Kaylee.
Items Claimed:
Misc- “They’d rolled Aunt Val out draped in a white sheet, and Uncle Brendon and Sophie followed the ambulance to the hospital, where she would get stitches in the back of her head, and her mother would be officially pronounced dead.”
*Clothing- “He reached back to pull the front door closed, then scuffed his boots on the mat before stepping into the living room.”
Weather- “Tables, students, and the school building itself were suddenly leached of their vibrancy, like someone had opened a drain at the base of a rainbow and let all the color out.”
Body Parts- “They looked almost normal, except for their hazy gray coloring and the odd, elongated proportion of their limbs—and the tail curled around the female’s slim ankle.”

Review: I really enjoy this author's writing style usually, but didn't enjoy this as much as I was hoping for. This is a wonderful premise for a book, but the relationship between Megan and Nate felt so forced, so rushed and so predictable, that it lost it's charm. I was captivated by Nate's backstory, the effect his scars had on his life and his confidence. I was equally intrigued Megan's past and her constant struggle to be who she is today, and her love for her little girl. I didn't really feel like a lot of their issues were resolved satisfactorily, but I enjoyed the way the tale was told.

Zoo Story was an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the workings of a zoo. Some parts were eye opening and I don't think I will ever think of zoos the same way again. Although there is nothing in particular that bothers or annoys me about this book I didn’t really enjoy it much.
