kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 2752 comments Hi kids! (insert Oompa Loompa song) This will be the discussion thread for the December F2F, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, and I hope everyone has a copy already (and cooperate). For those who do not have a copy (and hope will find one soon), please PM me your e-mail address and we’ll negotiate (business, this is business!).

I’m Kwesi, the manager of Wily Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, and I will be the moderator for the month of December (first time? it is!). The book is short (but not quiet short) and meant for younger readers (but not for toddlers) so it’s easy to read for everyone. I hope everyone will read, like and finish it before the actual discussion will start. Basically, I’m the only member here who always went to the discussion without finishing the book (self-proclaim or not? except Machetta’s book), so I’m (really) expecting everyone to finish it.

History

For those who don’t have any idea how we picked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for the month of December (I ditch some votes, kidding); we did a face-to-face voting last August 2012 in Intramuros with the other Noli me Tangere participants, moderated by Ayban. The books under Children’s Literature category (picked by Kuya D and me, myself and I) are: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and lastly, The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The members voted mostly to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Graveyard Book, but in the end of the day, Roald Dahl’s most famous work, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, won.

But the actual fight just started.

TFG’s moderator, Tina (thank you Tina for everything), created an online poll for online users (I’m still expecting you guys to join) to participate in the voting. To make it clear, we decided to multiply by ten the number of votes gathered from the face-to-face voting (it was the evil me who really planned it) and the book that will reach higher than the entirety of Roald Dahl’s votes will be the new book of the month. Unfortunately, but fortunate to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory voters (and to evil me), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl won again after a week of intense voting and campaign (thanks friends and better luck next time losers).

This is evidence that there are no (maybe there are) bias/es in picking the December’s book of the month (haters leave me alone, get lost to my evil lair).

What to expect?

Please, don’t expect too much.

Or, expect like this:

In the end of the discussion (sounds like reading my course syllabus), everyone can now write a book report, one hundred pages in length with minimum of twenty-four thousand words, regarding Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and summary of Roald Dahl’s life with great importance in his childhood years. You will expect the following (Lasallian, ugh) attributes after the month’s end: self-giving, socially responsible and professionally competent. In fact (believe me), this is a joke.

I want everyone to expect that this discussion will be a short and fun one like the past F2F you attended (or not attended). You don’t have to force yourself, no need to research, and self-understanding of the book is the most important key in the discussion (if you want, read all Roald Dahl’s work; I don’t care) so no harm for those who do not understand or finish a book, like me.

I’m doing my best to make this thread 100% cotton (fun and easy).

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 2752 comments Book Summary

Title: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Author: Roald Dahl
Illustrator: Quintin Blake
First Published: June of 1964
Summary: Twice turned into a feature film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a delectable classic about a child's dreams and the eccentric chocolate-maker who makes them come true. When Willy Wonka's hallowed chocolate factory holds a worldwide contest awarding tours to the lucky, five children emerge as winners, including a glutton, a gum- chewing nitwit, a spoiled brat, and a TV addict. Only Charlie Bucket, the story's earnest hero, stands to win the exotic riches of Wonka's empire-if he avoids the pitfalls of his fellow contestants and stays true to his heart. Ingenious and entertaining, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a true modern classic. -from Goodreads

Questions

When are you going to create a thread for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?
I just did.

Are we going to discuss Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator?
No, but feel free to read it. I’m sure you will be disappointed in the end. That book is less awesome and horrible compared to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. See, there are no sweets there. It’s just full of aliens and weirdness.

If you have questions regarding the book or the discussion itself, please comment below. Don’t be shy.

Prizes

Secret! Shhhhh...

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 2752 comments Who are you?

In the book, there are five children.

Augustus Gloop, a greedy boy.

Veruca Salt, a girl who is spoiled by her parents.

Violet Beauregarde, a girl who chews gum all day long.

Mike Teavee, a boy who does nothing but watch television.

Charlie Bucket, the hero.

But in the beginning, there is only you.

Hello beautiful and ugly.
Hello toddlers and grannies.
Hello bitter and sweet, sour and salty.
Hello newcomers.
Hello kids.

Welcome to the world of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where all kinds of candies and chocolates can be found. Before our journey begin in the odd world of sweets, your name and attribute is the most important factor in entering my master’s prestigious Chocolate Factory. To some, Wily Wonka’s Chocolate Factory is just a fiction; a creation of the mind. But few believes that my master’s Chocolate Factory is a magnificent mix of human and magical creation that for centuries, only those who have the power of the imagination can enter and visit the mosaic of sweets.

The game (or maybe not) is very simple. Create your name, don’t forget to include your first name, and at least give one description of yourself like the five children above. This will also serves as a headcount for the souvenirs and ticket for the future discussion.

Criteria: It should be funny or corny. Latter is invalid.

Example: Patrickus Thwatchyniger, a boy who have obsession for ab; or, Kwesilalu Molalulalu, a boy who enjoy pole dancing as his job and belly dancing as a hobby.

List of names: List of the Valids and Invalids

Hi! I'm Louize Dame Blanche , the woman who delivers with a crunch!

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments WTFF? Kwesi, did you just took meth when you wrote this? You sound like a cross between Willy Wonka and Austin Powers. :P

My name is: VINCENT VENO

Initially it was Vincent Thorne; a a pun of the direct translation of my middle name, Espinas, but then I thought it's too obvious. I think of something related to torns and the word VENOM comes to mind. I took out the M... just because. Chose this because I can pretty much be a venomous torn to the life of anyone I dislike. Harhar.

December 15 – A Visit to Wily Wonka’s Chocolate Factory (The Actual Discussion)

Make sure you will really take us to a chocolate factory. OR ELSE.

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments On second thought, Vincent Thorne sounds pretty cool and has a nice ring to it...

What is indecisive? Hahahaha

Veronica | 734 comments Aww, Veruca's a spoiled brat - it figures. :)

My name is Veronica Macarena Ascalona y Coco Labrador

The girl who loves her dogs, Macky the askal and Coco the lab, to death. She loves dark chocolate and will not eat chocolate with nuts, fruits and yucky marshmallows. If she had to choose between you and Nestle's Crunch, be afraid, be very afraid. :D

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Haha Kwesi ang kulit. :) Thanks for creating the thread!

Okay my name:

Tinaweena Peanutbutterina (It was the first thing that came to mind :D)

The girl who loves peanut butter more than anything else, and tries to include it in everything she bakes. :D She talks too much most of the time, but give her peanut butter and she shuts up (temporarily). :D

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments Kwestor, walang online screening?? :D

Alexa (codenameblue) | 935 comments Kung may screening PLEASE PLEASE let it be the 1975 version with Gene Wilder and Pure Imagination ahihi :")

Anyhoo, while I think of a better name, I'll name myself Bob. *bow*

message 16: by Alexa (last edited Nov 24, 2012 10:07PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Alexa (codenameblue) | 935 comments Then again, I thought of Bluekeeshia ChReeseTimTam von Schweetz. But I'm still tempted by Bob because it's a lot easier to spell.

I have a notorious sweet tooth (I eat chocolate every day, and I like them they way I do my coffee [which I rarely drink]: rich, dark, and bitter). I am a jawbreaker, with layers and layers of flavors and colors. Tough to break, and even tougher to bite, so don't even think about it. I would like this jawbreaker to be wrapped in chocolate and peanut butter! Hihi. HI.

Btw Kwesi, your name sounds like a beach in Hawaii.. where people drown.. or something. Jk. Basta it sounds so tropical, haha! I'll pop here in this thread to troll every now and then :D

message 17: by Tina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Bluekeeshia: MMM PEANUT BUTTER. <3

I wonder if we can set up our own candy buffet sa Christmas party. Haha hmm that's an idea. :D

Alexa (codenameblue) | 935 comments Tinaweena (btw your name sounds like a fairy name, like Tinkerbell!!!): I'm planning to bring a packet of Reese's and Tim Tams nga for props eh! If there's a candy buffet... Oh em, I will bring a toothbrush talaga so my teeth wouldn't spontaneously rot from the amount of candy I will be eating :)) (at inanticipate ko talaga ang kakainin ko, haha!)

message 19: by Tina (new) - rated it 3 stars

Tina (tinamats) | 2665 comments Bluekeeshia: You know what, I actually have a tinkerbell-ish dress. Haha I'm wearing it for my friend's wedding on the 5th. :)) It's candy colored, too. Haha. Hmm idea! :>

Anyway, let's see. Ang dami na kasi pinapadala sa Christmas party. Saka depende pala to sa diskarte ni Kwesilalu. :)

message 20: by Veronica (last edited Nov 25, 2012 03:28AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Veronica | 734 comments Okay, I've had time to think, haha. Baka ilagay ako ni Kwesilalu sa invalid...

You can call me Purple Ronnie Choccywoccy for short. :)

She still loves dogs, still hates nuts in her choccy bar but this Christmas, she promises not to trade you for a Nestle's Crunch bar (offer expires Dec. 31, 2012). :D

Hahaha

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Hindi ko alam kung maiistress ako dito or madedestress, hahaha. I'm Angelina Maraschina Cherriebina, Kwesilalu's nemesis in the TFG bullying contests. >:)

Bluekeeshia ChReeseTimTam von Schweetz/Bob, haha. Lollipop dapat ang inspiration niyan eh biglang naging Hawaii ang peg. Haha. Gusto ko rin yung first adaptation kahit ang corny ng design. Haha.

Purple Ronnie Choccywoccy, haha. Di ka na sa invalid. I love both your names. May problem lang ako dun sa description nung una. Ang haba. Haha.

Angelina Maraschina, sure ka na ba sa description mo? Huwag kang magagalit kung ang ibibigay ko ay panget. Haha.

Geneberry Cheesecake, finally! Sana makapunta ka sa book discussion. I like your name, napakasweet. Haha. Huwag mo ring kalimutan ang description mo.
