Come back soon Fiona ! Good luck on the repair!(Hey you could look at this as a sign from God that you really DO need a new laptop.)
:)
Fiona,I hope your laptop is repairable. My cat knocked over a glass of pop on mine, and had the same result. Hope to see you back soon with a repaired laptop.
Randi
I'll give you mine... it's got lovely windows vista on it!! *evil snicker*
Fiona,Computers are sometimes remarkably easy to repair from this type of damage. It may only require disassembly, cleaning with proper solvent, and reassembly.
Talk to your local small-shop geek. He/she may be able to help.
Vista=yuck. So, I just read a bit about Watership Down in The Stand (Stu read it), and it cracked me up, because I thought about all you guys that have read it.
Then I put it on hold at the library.
lol.
Allison, I always think of Stu when people talk about Watership Down, and I've always wanted to read it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. It will be a while now though, of course. :)
haha, it really cracked me up...because I hear about it so much on here, so I figured I better get to it, I'm completely shocked my crap library has it at all.
LOL!!Well I could go to the main city library...but I live in a suburb and its like 45 minutes away.
So instead I fire up the ILL request feature on their website.
Yes. Well the one within walking distance is very small, but they will order anything for you, and I think that's where they send all the sweet, little, old, blue haired librarians to "pasture". My kids love them.
Now now ladies, lets not fight over me. I can love you both equally. Maybe a visitation arrangement is in order? Or, maybe Kandice can come with me to Fiona's and we can all have cake!
I will make cake and biscuits for everyone. Hows that? Oh and bread and butter pudding. What does it keep telling you? Shaun hates Vista!
I make really good cheesecakes, but... unless you want a very large posterior, probably shouldn't eat too much of that!
Vista is terrible. Thomas had a customer computer built so that he didn't have to have Vista on it, since that's really the only operating system that Windows sells in new factory computers now.
Well... you see they have to make it "simple" for people. Simple, as in the idiot-proof AOL (sorry AOL users!) point-and-click-on-the-pretty-picture system in which you're only allowed to do what AOL lets you do. Vista's not even compatible with programs that were compatible with previous versions of Windows, meaning that you have to buy everything again if you want to use programs you are used to using. And then of course those programs all have "improvements" that make no sense and lower their effectiveness.
I'm not bitter... Oh no! LOL
They must be geared toward gits like me. As you girls are aware, I need help with the simplest tasks above typing! I often have to get instructions from Fiona. (but she doesn't mind:) (right?)
I have Vista, and I am finally getting used to it. It came with both of my laptops. I don't think you can buy anything but Vista these days. A computer mechanic friend of mine says they are finally getting used to Vista too. Apparently, they had a hard time with it for a while also.
See, in my opinion, one shouldn't have to get used to the new operating system. A few minor things might need to be adjusted, sure, but having to relearn a whole new system doesn't make sense. Improvements should open up a wider range of possibilities, not narrow them. It should also be more intuitive, not less. If "print" is no longer under file, and now takes a three-person Tech Support team to find, that's not improvement.
I'm glad I don't have Vista.
Microsoft operating systems are the stuff for discussions that merit whole threads--indeed websites. Many agree with you, Becky, myself included. My father is an Apple devotee who can occupy an entire evening's discussion expounding upon the demerits of Windows systems as well as the monopolistic business practices of Microsoft.
My profession requires that I use Microsoft compatible software--so I am tied to Windows systems. But since I build my own computers (my hobby), I can select which operating system I load on my computer. I prefer Windows 2000 and use it the most. But some software requires that I use Windows XP; so that is loaded on a separate hard drive. I even have Windows 98 loaded on an older computer that I use for vintage computer games (All duely licensed). I am also playing with and learning the many Linux systems for the long haul.
There is so much of the typical Microsoft business practices associated with the Vista introduction that many suspect the worst (spyware).
If you have a custom computer built for you by your your local neighborhood small-shop geek, you can have the operating system of your choice loaded for you. Vista is imposed upon us by the purchase of new mainstream computers as a result of business contracts required by Microsoft upon those mainstream computer manufacturers.
End of rant. Thank you for your patience.
I dunno... I don't really see any improvements to that either. Just a bunch of stuff that makes it more pleasing to the eye. I don't want all of my Internet windows to be grouped together under the "Internet" icon. I want to be able to change from window to window with one click, rather than having to click the icon, then click on the "thumbnail" view of the window I want.
I also have no use for invisible windows. Or a home networking group. Or themes. Or handwriting recognition. Or a touch-screen system... Etc.
Yep Mosca, that's what we ended up doing. Building the computer custom so that we could have exactly what we wanted. I'd rather have DOS if it does what I want, how I want, rather than a pretty sunset theme that doesn't do anything for me.
Fiona is your computer okay or still on your Dad's?
