Allison (inconceivably) *sob* but...but....

Well, its good you'll be able to read a lot of It now!

R.I.P. Fiona's laptop.

message 4: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Come back soon Fiona ! Good luck on the repair!

(Hey you could look at this as a sign from God that you really DO need a new laptop.)

:)

JG (Introverted Reader) We'll miss you! I hope it's not as bad as it sounds!

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 1045 comments Fiona,

I hope your laptop is repairable. My cat knocked over a glass of pop on mine, and had the same result. Hope to see you back soon with a repaired laptop.

Randi

Mosca | 828 comments Fiona,

Computers are sometimes remarkably easy to repair from this type of damage. It may only require disassembly, cleaning with proper solvent, and reassembly.

Talk to your local small-shop geek. He/she may be able to help.

message 9: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Vista=yuck.

So, I just read a bit about Watership Down in The Stand (Stu read it), and it cracked me up, because I thought about all you guys that have read it.

Then I put it on hold at the library.

lol.

message 10: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Then where are you? I'm glad you got a new one. I would miss you terribly;)

message 11: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Allison, I always think of Stu when people talk about Watership Down, and I've always wanted to read it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. It will be a while now though, of course. :)

message 12: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) haha, it really cracked me up...because I hear about it so much on here, so I figured I better get to it, I'm completely shocked my crap library has it at all.

message 13: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'd be shocked if they didn't... its only been a classic for like, forever, haha!

message 14: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) my library doesn't have a copy of Sense and Sensability...or Great Expectations.

They suuuuuuck.

message 15: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) You should move.

message 16: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) LOL!!

Well I could go to the main city library...but I live in a suburb and its like 45 minutes away.

So instead I fire up the ILL request feature on their website.

message 17: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I suppose that works. I'd move though.

message 18: by Kandice (new)

Kandice You would not!!!!

message 19: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yes I would. I'd move in with you. You have a good library right? ;)

message 20: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Yes. Well the one within walking distance is very small, but they will order anything for you, and I think that's where they send all the sweet, little, old, blue haired librarians to "pasture". My kids love them.

message 21: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Cake? I'm sold. When's my flight?

message 22: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Hey now, how does Becky rate?????? Besides she's already coming to live with me;)

message 23: by Kandice (new)

Kandice YOU offerred HER the cake!!!!!! I'm feeling slighted...

message 24: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Now now ladies, lets not fight over me. I can love you both equally. Maybe a visitation arrangement is in order? Or, maybe Kandice can come with me to Fiona's and we can all have cake!

message 25: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Sure... as long as there is cake. I especially like cheesecakes and German chocolate cakes.

message 26: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I will make cake and biscuits for everyone. Hows that? Oh and bread and butter pudding.

What does it keep telling you? Shaun hates Vista!

message 27: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I make really good cheesecakes, but... unless you want a very large posterior, probably shouldn't eat too much of that!

message 28: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Maybe it's for the benefit of anyone not keeping a close enough eye on you?

message 29: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Vista is terrible. Thomas had a customer computer built so that he didn't have to have Vista on it, since that's really the only operating system that Windows sells in new factory computers now.

message 30: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Fiona wrote: ":("

I know... I'm sorry.

message 31: by Kandice (new)

Kandice You are speaking Greek, but I'm sorry you are :(.

message 32: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Well... you see they have to make it "simple" for people. Simple, as in the idiot-proof AOL (sorry AOL users!) point-and-click-on-the-pretty-picture system in which you're only allowed to do what AOL lets you do.

Vista's not even compatible with programs that were compatible with previous versions of Windows, meaning that you have to buy everything again if you want to use programs you are used to using. And then of course those programs all have "improvements" that make no sense and lower their effectiveness.

I'm not bitter... Oh no! LOL

message 33: by Kandice (new)

Kandice They must be geared toward gits like me. As you girls are aware, I need help with the simplest tasks above typing! I often have to get instructions from Fiona. (but she doesn't mind:) (right?)

message 34: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 1045 comments I have Vista, and I am finally getting used to it. It came with both of my laptops. I don't think you can buy anything but Vista these days. A computer mechanic friend of mine says they are finally getting used to Vista too. Apparently, they had a hard time with it for a while also.

message 35: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) See, in my opinion, one shouldn't have to get used to the new operating system. A few minor things might need to be adjusted, sure, but having to relearn a whole new system doesn't make sense.

Improvements should open up a wider range of possibilities, not narrow them. It should also be more intuitive, not less. If "print" is no longer under file, and now takes a three-person Tech Support team to find, that's not improvement.

I'm glad I don't have Vista.

message 36: by Mosca (last edited Feb 23, 2009 06:35PM) (new)

Mosca | 828 comments Microsoft operating systems are the stuff for discussions that merit whole threads--indeed websites. Many agree with you, Becky, myself included.

My father is an Apple devotee who can occupy an entire evening's discussion expounding upon the demerits of Windows systems as well as the monopolistic business practices of Microsoft.

My profession requires that I use Microsoft compatible software--so I am tied to Windows systems. But since I build my own computers (my hobby), I can select which operating system I load on my computer. I prefer Windows 2000 and use it the most. But some software requires that I use Windows XP; so that is loaded on a separate hard drive. I even have Windows 98 loaded on an older computer that I use for vintage computer games (All duely licensed). I am also playing with and learning the many Linux systems for the long haul.

There is so much of the typical Microsoft business practices associated with the Vista introduction that many suspect the worst (spyware).

If you have a custom computer built for you by your your local neighborhood small-shop geek, you can have the operating system of your choice loaded for you. Vista is imposed upon us by the purchase of new mainstream computers as a result of business contracts required by Microsoft upon those mainstream computer manufacturers.

End of rant. Thank you for your patience.

message 37: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I dunno... I don't really see any improvements to that either. Just a bunch of stuff that makes it more pleasing to the eye.

I don't want all of my Internet windows to be grouped together under the "Internet" icon. I want to be able to change from window to window with one click, rather than having to click the icon, then click on the "thumbnail" view of the window I want.

I also have no use for invisible windows. Or a home networking group. Or themes. Or handwriting recognition. Or a touch-screen system... Etc.

message 38: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yep Mosca, that's what we ended up doing. Building the computer custom so that we could have exactly what we wanted.

I'd rather have DOS if it does what I want, how I want, rather than a pretty sunset theme that doesn't do anything for me.

message 39: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Good luck with that Fiona. ;)
