Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Finished Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince for Task 10.5 (Houdini's Bday). It's the best book of the series so far (in my opinion), and I can't wait to start on Deathly Hallows.

Total Points: 290

I hope you aren't disappointed. I thought Deathly Hallows was the worst written of all of them.

Jessica (sureshot26) | 94 comments I finished up 25.5 (Bonnie's Task) with Taras Grescoe's "The Devil's Picnic: Around the World in Pursuit of Forbidden Fruit" - it's travel writing, which I almost never read. Interesting, but a bit sermonizing in places.

Read two books from the shelves of the person who posted after your first post. I got to choose from Cynthia's (the SCM) shelves.
Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris
Nefertiti by Michelle Moran

I loved Nefertiti and was so happy to see it on Cynthia's shelf because the teachers at my school were asked to evaluate the book in order to use it for the summer reading program for our upcoming 9th grade students.

New Total: 185 points

message 4855: by Sarah D (new)

Sarah D I saw a couple of people comment about www.betterworldbooks.com I did place an order a few days ago but I noticed today that if you order and use the code EARTHDAY09 I think it was you get an extra 20% off. So anything in their bargain bin would only be $2.40/each (assuming you buy 5) plus the free shipping...not bad!

message 4856: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Well, crap. I didn't see you had to use the code.

message 4857: by Sarah D (new)

Sarah D Well I guess I had better back up...I just put 5 bargain bin books in my cart and total was $15 then I entered the code and it only went down to $14.12. You must not be able to get both deals.

message 4858: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Sarah, it works out if your used books were originally $3.48 each. 20% off that number gets you to $14.12. I spent 88 cents too much, but I think I can live with that. ;)

Hey Hayes! I kind of already had a white dinner yesterday: mozzarella di Bufala & tomatoes, and fromage blanc (kind of yoghurt) as dessert, but it seems too easy :) so I have to find something a little more difficult to prepare, but I don't know what yet

Elizabeth (Alaska) 15.4 Olive Kitteridge A Novel in Stories

I loved this book and give it 5 stars. I can't remember ever finishing a book and thinking I would be interested in reading it again, but this is one of those for me. Elizabeth Strout's style flows easily so that reaching into the meaning behind the words is almost effortless. I say almost effortless because there is a lot here. Little to no plot, it's all characterization. Olive Kitteridge is a many-layered character, but the others (and there are many) are not 2-dimensional.

Hayes, I had not thought about The Woman in White for my color task, but you've certainly planted a seed. It just looks like a good read for me. I also sort of anticipate a mystery as one of the tasks for the Summer Challenge (aren't they supposed to be good for beach reads?), so I may save it for that.

Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) That is a ton of people! My goal is to stay in the top screen of people on the scoreboard when I scroll, haha. I'm generally right around the edge there. I went to the library today though and I had to remind myself that the point is to read books that I want to read and wouldn't otherwise. I think that I may not end up reading some of the books I've listed that are *only* there because of the challenge and don't actually look interesting to me (only a few) in favor of instead reading books I really want to that are available at my public library and won't be when I move, or books that I own and want to finish so that I can give them away instead of making room for them in the car.

I love the Uglies trilogy and wished I had found it while in High School! Such a great read and character.

message 4893: by Kritika (new)

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) 5 point task 2 (epistolary novel) completed! I read Dracula. It was rather creepy, but it seemed very old fashioned and hard to read. I guess it had to be: it was written in 1897! The climax was so short, I could hardly figure out it was the climax until it was over. Other than that, I thought it was pretty good.
Kritika's total points
305+5
310

Question for Cynthia: Would The Lightning Thief work for 5pt task 8 (humorous novel)? It is technically fantasy/action but I think it's pretty funny.

That's been my goal too! I keep being just under and then think if I just read this one more book--but then of course, everyone else is reading as well. It reminds of the saying that when you are running away from a bear, you don't have to be faster than the bear, just faster than the next guy. No way am I going to catch the people near the top, but if I can just keep a little faster... :)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) My first goal was to get 100... I got that. Now my goal is to make it to 150 before graduation... so i have 3 weeks to get 35 points... I just hope exams and projects don't kill that goal for me!

message 4896: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Kathryn, that was sort of my goal. I thought I'd make 105 after I looked at the tasks and my books. I posted enough to get to 165 this morning, so now I think 225 is possible, but I'll see if 250 is in the cards.

Leora Just completed the rhyming task 15-7. 'Ella Minnow PEA' by Mark Dunn and 'Family TREE' by Barbara Delinsky. Liked both of the books, Ella was thought provoking and I am considering doing it with my students, a lot of messages there about issues that would resonate with them. (Should we follow the crowd? How do we stand up for what we believe in etc.)

Family Tree was a good, fast read, again thought provoking.

This brings my point total to 410.
