Liked it? LOL Everyone really loved it- I'm not just saying that! But you've had it to so you already know how good it is. I had some friends come over while I was cooking and the look on their faces was priceless. They've NEVER seen me cook before- especially nothing like that with all those darn ingredients! LOL Thanks again Sara!

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments I finished John's 25-Point task, read a long book about British Monarchy.
I read Sex with Kings 500 Years of Adultery, Power, Rivalry, and Revenge and Sex with the Queen 900 Years of Vile Kings, Virile Lovers, and Passionate Politics both by Eleanor Herman.
Here is my review for Sex With The Queen:
This book was more well-written than Sex With Kings. Hermann structures the book in chronological order with various anecdotes of different countries. I felt the queens were much more interesting than the kings. These women had to put up with incompotent, unloving men. Catherine The Great, was perhaps the most interesting, as she lead one of the most powerful nations and was, the most in touch with her sexuality out of all of the women described in the book. I wish Herman had spent more time on Eleanor of Acquitane, because she's awesome to read about. This woman was married to the king of France and mistress to the king of England, oh and she had Richard the Lionhearted and King John as children. She's awesome. I thought it was intersting that Herman decided to conclude the book with anecdotes on Princess Di Spencer. I didn't really know much about her, but I found it fascinating the amount of lovers she had. It was nice that Herman didn't paint her as a saint, but as a regular woman with passions, stuck in a loveless marriage. I would definately recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the royals, or a passing interest in sex.
Here is my review for Sex With Kings:
Sex is interesting. Sex with great figures of history, Kings, is even more interesting. To me, this was a fascinating read. I enjoyed reading about the trials the mistresses went through, and even sympathized with them. I actually wish there had been more on Camilla, the mistress of Prince Charles, but oh well. I think the most intriguing mistresses were Louis XIV's mistresses. The book was informative on what the life of a mistress was like, the public's feelings towards mistresses, what happened to royal bastards, things like that. It's intersting that some mistresses, such as Madame Pompadour who ran the Seven Years War, shaped history. Others were fostered on the king so as to gain political influence such as Louise de Keroualle from France who was mistress to Charles II, basically she was a pawn of the king of France and tried to influence Charles II. All in all, if you enjoy reading about bawdy things, check this book out.

This brings my pointage up to 215.

Nicole | 155 comments I read The Appeal for 15.1, Libra. It's a been a while since I've read a Grisham novel, and it's hard to call them formulaic (sp?) with so many characters going in different directions, but after his first few they all seem to be about the same. It wasn't bad, but yay for hitting 200!

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 1489 comments two more challenges completed:

10.10 TNBBC member: Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon (5* read on Lynne's bookshelf) completed 4.12.09

The opening chapter hooked me, but then the author seemed to take the reader on tangents and detours from the 'lost book' idea, but they all eventually connected and joined to make a rich story, both in the present and the past.

15.7 Dr. Seuss: (books with rhyming words in titles)
Heaven and Earth Nora Roberts completed 4.12.09
Worth Any Price Lisa Kleypas completed 4.10.09

I was going to use 'Birds Without Wings' by Louis de Bernieres (writer of Corelli's Mandolin) for the task where 'bird' has to be in the title... and just now opened the book and it's about 550 pages! Yikes... I might need to choose a shorter book. I'll start reading and see how quickly it seems to go... lol!

Birds Without Wings is my de facto selection for the Spring Cleaning task (also a 5 pointer) and I had a similar reaction as you when I realized how many pages it had! That's a whole lotta book for not a lot of points!!!! :)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Woohoo I made it to the 200 point mark...I just finished Deep in the Heart of Trouble for the Eater-Lent Christian Fiction task...it was the sequel to Courting Trouble and I think it concluded the story very well - I wouldn't mind reading more about the characters if she wrote another book about them at all but I don't think it's really necessary - I like that - there's nothing worse than reading a book and feeling like so much more needed to be sorted out and no sequel exists or is planned.

Manday | 212 comments So, when people choose books do they look for short ones for the low point tasks?

I have just been using my "to read" list to fill in tasks, it makes the most sense to me to read what I was planning on reading that fits, even if its long. I am seriously tempted to start a "how do you choose books for the challenge" poll.

Personally I don't choose books based on the amount of points. I too use my TBR list or choose off my bookshelf at home or randomly at the library. The points factor very little (if at all) in my decisions, but I might be in the minority here. Plus I like to read books I might not otherwise read, hence the "challenge" part for me (meaning I try not to take an easy out).

message 4117: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 155 comments Just read Celebrations Rituals of Peace and Prayer for 15.2. I'm not a big poetry fan, but there's no denying that Maya Angelou is a powerful writer. I had read one of her memoirs for an earlier tasks, so it was good to read the poetry as well.

Now a question, can I use The Secret Life of Josephine Napoleon's Bird of Paradise for the military task, or is that too much of a stretch? it's not about Napoleon, but he's a key player... :)

I try to choose shorter books for tasks I'm not all that excited about - like the poetry one, but I think I had a 400 pager for one of my 5 point tasks.

Since this is the first Challenge I've participated in I just jumped in and read books I thought fit the criteria. I didn't look at number of pages in relationship to points. But I am a pretty fast reader, so number of pages doesn't faze me--print size, however, can be a factor. (And pictures are always welcome.)
This has been a lot of fun for me--it's given some direction to my reading the last two months and led me to some very enjoyable books.

message 4121: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) No, I'm not choosing shorter books for lower point tasks. You don't win anything by having more points than the next person, so hurrying through the Challenge doesn't really get you anywhere. To me, the challenge part is exploring books based on some outside criteria, instead of just sticking with the same stuff I always read. That said, I'm trying to pick books that will entertain me and expand my knowledge in some way.

message 4123: by Sara ♥ (last edited Apr 13, 2009 06:58PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I don't necessarily choose short books for the lower-point tasks, although you CAN. My longest task is 552 pages (The Book Thief), and that was for a 10-point task. I have a 105-page 25-point task (Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde), a 161-page 25-point task (Winnie-the-Pooh), and a 97-page 5-point task (84 Charing Cross Road). Those are my shortest books. I just choose books that look interesting to me. For the more "difficult" tasks, I do try to go shorter rather than longer, but for most of them, it's not too difficult to find a book you would like to read, so length isn't so important to me.

Aren't you just in awe about how many point some of these ladies have, though? HOLY COW!

I wish I had more time to read. Unfortunately, my husband would be quite upset with me if I quit my job and just read all the time, seeing as how he's in school and I'm pretty much the breadwinner right now... :) If anyone figures out how to get paid to stay at home and read, PLEASE let me know!

message 4124: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey My job lets me read at it, but I don't make much.. I'm technically a library aide for my full time job and an AV clerk at my night job. Both jobs have some serious down time... so I tend to read when I don't have homework to do. I don't get paid much... but hey, it's a job with benefits.

I also have been using my huge TBR list to meet most of my book challenges. I don't look at page numbers either, but most of my books are YA where I can fit it in because I can only read age-appropriate books at my middle school job. I only have one or two YA books left so I'm gonna be reading a lot at my night job and on weekends. I don't go out much since I'm broke, so I get to read in my free time.

message 4125: by Eva-Marie (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) I don't choose like that either- I just try to pick what I think I'll like. Like Elizabeth said- there are no prizes at the end! LOL
Someone else mentioned if it's a task they aren't looking forward to maybe picking a shorter book and I'm not into poetry so that would be where I'd try to go short. Or Jon's task- but he made sure we wouldn't do that right Jon?! LOL
I do have to admit- I'm eager to see if I'll like the book I picked for that. Which is the whole reason for doing this in my mind!

I just finished As The World Dies - The First Days-A Zombie Trilogy and As The World Dies Fighting to Survive A Zombie Trilogy and CAN'T wait for the third one to come out! My friend recommended them for a task so I figured what the hell and I ended up LOVING them! I would never have thought I'd like anything like that- I'm barely even into fiction, much less anything fantasy, etc.
I definitely recommend! She has a vampire book too- Pretty When She Dies A Vampire Novel that I plan on getting.

Madeline | 293 comments Thanks Sharon and Elizabeth you're right I am closer! After redrafting my list I have finished:

10 points

10.5 Acorna's Search by Anne McCaffery (Author born in April)
10.6 Not the End of the World by Kate Atkinson (Earth Day)

15 points

15.8 The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. I read an interview that specifically focused on the Arthurian aspect of her tales. I some ways I wish I hadn't read it because I've not yet finished the series and there were some spoilers, but I loved the way she talked about her writing process. How the story injected itself with what it needed and was never contrived. I loved that she says she writes for herself not for a particular audience, as an artist I always find my best pieces come when I'm doing them for myself it rung true for me that the same would apply to writing. This was a great challenge. It makes me question why I haven't sought more information about authors in the past, I do so when I've found new artists I admire.

Here's the link in case anyone else wants to read it.:

25 points

25.7 Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin (Referenced by various movies)

I've read 25.7 but still have to do the meal.

So my total so far is 60.

Also I was wondering where do you find the tickers? They're pretty cute.

(Thanks Eva!)

5. Magic/Magician: At the House of the Magician by Mary Hooper.

Funny to read two books involving the same fictionalized historic characters back-to-back. Like The Queen's Fool A Novel, Queen Elizabeth and Dr. John Dee are important characters. Elizabeth is portrayed MUCH more sympathetically in this book. The book itself was an okay historical fiction/magic book. I don't regret reading it, but it wasn't a book I care to ever read again.

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) Alex the Life of a Child DEFINITELY works for the sacrifice task. It's REALLY hard to read though. Probably the most difficult I've ever had to read, one other comes to mind, and I've read some hard books.

message 4140: by Sara ♥ (last edited Apr 13, 2009 10:55PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I just finished another task...

Task 15.7 - Rhyming Titles: Smart Girls Think Twice by Cathie Linz (3/7/09) AND Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (4/13/09) (twice/mice)

I'm trying to remember back to Smart Girls... *reads review from over a month ago* Oh yes. Cute little fluff of a romance novel. Here's a blurb from my review about the hero of the story: "Jake was great, although I think if I analyzed him, his main character trait would be sexiness... which I'm not sure is a very... ummm... good quality to base a long-term relationship on." Haha...

As for Of Mice and Men... I just just just finished it, and I'm really not sure how I feel about it yet. I'm not sure I've quite had time to process everything. We'll see how I feel about it once I've had time to sleep on it.

Anyway, next is I Capture the Castle.

STATS
Tasks Completed: 19/39
Books Read: 24/45
Pages Read: 6157
Points Earned: 265

PS - Look! I just crossed the halfway point! (Well, for the 525 points currently available...)
PPS - My copy of The Life of Elizabeth I is due on 5/5, and I'm calculating how many pages a DAY I'm going to have to read in order to finish it by then.... It's not looking pretty...

4. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Task – Read or listen to a book while you are on a plane, on a train, or in a car (or other mode of transport like a bus/combinations of transportation)
- For this task you can’t, for example, start a book in the airport and finish it on the plane...the book must be read entirely while inside one of those modes of transportation.
- But the plane/train/car etc. does not have to be moving the entire time for it to count – exe. you can start reading the book once you board the plane before it takes off.
- DOES NOT have to be read in one sitting.

Audio book in the car - Hawkes Harbor by SE Hinton. Really enjoyed it

This is the same situation as Journey to the Center of the Earth in which the book of the same title is mentioned in the film and I dissallowed that...so I'm afraid that won't count
