Nicole | 155 comments Meghan wrote: "Finished Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for 15.6... story was great, translation was a bit clunky.

I felt the same way about Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I hated the way he ended the book - not the climax of the story, but the last two pages. Maybe he was just trying to set up her story to keep going in the next book which comes out this summer (Girl Who Played With Fire)? It just left me really sad and left me with a weird feeling about the book.

I think it's because you hear so darn much from so many different people. Usually you hear different thoughts and see different ratings and reviews and when you start hearing the SAME thing from everyone you start having insane expectations! I learned my lesson there though- any book with that much going on around it, kind of like The Shack when I read that, I'm not listening to anyone about until AFTER I read it! :)

She'Davia Williams (redsoxocd) how do I cross out and bold books on my list?

message 3760: by Eva-Marie (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) If you use these arrows <> with an i (italics), b (bold), or s (strike) in between in front of the words you want in italics, striked, or bold and then in back of the words use the same arrows but with /i, /b, or /s in between.

message 3761: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey There's a link that says (some html is ok) above the comment box - click on that and it will show you some basic html to use.

message 3762: by Eva-Marie (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) Like if you want to make the word 'love' bold you'd do this

left arrow, b, right arrow, love, left arrow, /, b, right arrow

just no commas

Joanie | 714 comments Cynthia, are planning to have the top scorers submit tasks this time around too? I was thinking that it might be fun to have one submitted by the "most improved reader." I know I don't have a chance of coming close to the 300 mark and I'm sure there are some others that are feeling the same way. What if we all looked at our score from the last challenge and compared it to our score for this challenge and the person whose score increased by the largest percentage wins the "most improved reader" award and gets to submit a task? Just thought it might be a way to create a little competition for those of us who are not near the top of the leaderboard.

8. For April Fools Day… Read a humorous novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

message 3779: by Maliades (new)

Maliades Cynthia, thanks for clearing up my question about the Sharon Shinn YA novel! I am going to use it for the 5.1 task though, since it's classified as sci fi in my library and on GR.

I also need to keep track of my points better, ack! I'm getting confused. My correct point total should be 65, not 60 as in my last post. I am going to type up a list like others are doing and post it later. I also want to track the number of pages I've read for this challenge, am curious to see how much I can read! lol

To everyone looking for a novel for the (task 10.8) Armed Forces day: All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque is pretty good. Or, you could use it as the translated novel (task 15.6), since it was originally published in German. It is pretty good, and a fairly quick read.

Heather Hi Cynthia! I have also read Fun Home A Family Tragicomic for the 25 point task of read something out of your "norm." I have never read a graphic novel before. That is the other 25 points making my total 125. Thanks!

8. In Honor of Memorial and Armed Forces Day – Read a book about a veteran OR someone serving in the military (fiction or non-fiction).
Love My Rifle More Than You- Kayla Williams

This was decent. I'm glad I read it because knowing next to nothing about the army it does give some insight and she seems to be quite honest.
I got a bad impression of her in the very beginning because she was very negative about Lynndie England and Jessica Lynch's situations. She apparently believes they aren't up to par with her and what she went through and that Lynch made a mistake which brought this on herself. Her saying that seemed even more strange later in the book because she goes on to talk about mistakes of her own and other soldiers. I'm still not sure what to make of that because it was all contradictory.
Besides that the book seemed very honest, she also opened up about her own feelings and actions and some of it I'm sure most people would not have shared. She spoke of humiliating prisoners, feelings of wanting to just kill locals, etc.
I thought she brought forth her feelings well overall and it is great to learn about some of the day to day situations some of the soldiers face.
It's a quick book too- it only took me this long to get through because I was reading three others.
This is probably an easy one for this task.

Jamie, if you liked The Bell Jar you should also check out her book Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams Short Stories, Prose, and Diary Excerpts (if you haven't already). I really liked that one.

Lori (batchelorxyz) | 158 comments I finished To Hell and Back by Lilith Saintcrow last night. That makes 3, 4, and 5 of the Dante Valentine series for task 15.10. Which brings my total points to 165. 3=The Devil's Right Hand: and 4=Saint City Sinners:

I really enjoyed this series. It is very different from the usual paranormal books that I read, but I still liked it very much. I would recommend it to anyone who likes paranormal fiction as long as they don't mind it being a little bit futuristic. Dante lives 600 years in our future and some of the changes the author makes are very interesting.

Oh sad! I love New Moon. It's much better the second time you read it... Of course, to me, Bella doesn't seem terribly whiney. I could understand it you thought that though...

Jen B (jennybee618) So I'm a little miffed that I ordered a bunch of used books to complete my 25 point tasks for this challenge, but they haven't arrived yet. I ordered them over a month ago, but nothing! So I'm re-shuffling my list...a bit of a bummer because I really wanted to read some of those, too. Okay, end of rant!

In the meantime I've finished another task:

10 Point Tasks
5. March 24 is Harry Houdini’s Birthday – Read a book about magic, a magician etc.

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen

I loved absolutely everything about this book! I highly recommend it -- there are several spots where it can be used in this challenge.

message 3793: by Rory M. (last edited Apr 08, 2009 10:29AM) (new)

Rory M. I got on the Twilight bandwagon well into it's spiraling popularity. The media specialist at my school saw me on campus last summer & said "You have to read this series...it's the next Harry Potter & will get our kids reading!". With an endorsement like that I absolutely had to read them!

I definitely enjoyed Twilight (the first book) and proceeded to read the next 3 in quick succession. Personally I thought New Moon was very slow and Bella did grate on my nerves - in my eyes she was desperate. I don't find this type of heroine to be a great role model for girls. She redeemed herself in other ways though in my opinion. I thought the Renesme plot twist a little over the top...and just plain weird but I'm a fan of Conan so, really my tastes aren't that discerning!

I'm on the AP Listserv (it helps me prepare our next AP students as I'm at the middle school level) and this series has sparked tons of debate - does it have literary merit, discussions about Meyer's writing style, etc.

Personally I wouldn't "teach" the book per se in class but it has inspired many of my students to read - now how can that be a bad thing? In fact, the books were incredibly popular with a few of my rough & tough hispanic boys - you gotta love that!

My personal reading odyssey began with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 5th grade and I was quickly led to historial romance (the Sunfire series put out by Scholastic - Amanda) which eventually led me to be an AP English student in high school where I was reading Jane Eyre, A Separate Peace, and To Kill a Mockingbird in class and books by Johanna Lindsey on my own. Now I teach Language Arts! These days I wouldn't typically pick up a romance novel but it seems that after Charlie got me hooked on reading that was my genre of choice for awhile.

Someone said reading 1,000 books won't hurt a child but reading just one, with one point of view, will. My point is, who knows where one book can take a child!

I'll leave you with a quote from Maya Angelou that goes out on all my school emails: Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.
