Elizabeth (Alaska) I see several of you reading The Red Tent as Christian fiction. Having read it, this surprises me. The book takes place several thousand years before the birth of Christ. I didn't think it particularly religious, rather an exploration of what it is to be a woman.

It's been several years since I read this one, but what an unexpectedly enjoyable read!

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I finished Seven Up for the humor task - not quite as funny as some as the last few but still I had a few laugh out loud moments and was left wanting more - I've read 2-7 of this series for this challenge and enjoyed every one of them - I read the first one months ago but maybe I wasn't in the mood for it but wasn't real crazy about it so I put off continuing the series but now I'm wishing I could fit more of them into the challenge - the way this one ended I can't wait to find out what happens next - also makes me glad I discovered this series when so many had already been written otherwise I would have gone crazy waiting for her to publish another one.

Bridgit | 475 comments Hi -

I have a few more to add from this weekend. I finished Zugzwang by Roman Bennet as task 5.4. I read this on the train home to my mother's house. It was an interesting book, set in the pre-revolution Russia, focused on a political conspiracy involving a Jewish psychologist and a high-profile chess match. I enjoyed it, but not knowing the technical aspects of chess (ke5, kf6, etc) i definitely missed some aspects of it. It followed one game to the end, which ended up in a 'Zugzwang' which is a position in chess where all moves end with negative results. Overall, it was an interesting read, but not one that I would recommend unless you were particularly interested in either chess or the struggle of Russian Jews in the 1910's.

The other book I read was March by Geraldine Brooks, for 10.3, an author born in Australia. March was a Pulitzer Prize winning book that follows the unheard story of Mr. March from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. It gives his back story, the tale of how he met his wife, the story of while he was away, and how he eventually made it home. It wasn't really my style of book, but I enjoyed it. It took a lot longer for me to get through than it shoudl have though - one of those books that is easy to put down. A great read, though, for lovers of Little Women.

Total Points: 325

Isn't this kind of like bitten and ten though? I thought I saw someone use them and they were okayed?

message 3660: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Apr 06, 2009 09:31AM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) For those of you who liked The Red Tent, you might also like Sarah A Novel by Marek Halter. If I remember my Bible genealogy, this is the Sarah who is the grandmother to Dinah of The Red Tent, but if I have my generations confused, she is the Sarah, long-barren wife of Abraham. When I read this, it was to be the first of a trilogy of biblical women, and I see the author has followed with Zipporah, Wife of Moses A Novel and Lilah A Novel. I have not read these last two. Sarah has more religion, but, again, you get a good feeling and understanding of the time period.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Eva - I think the rhyme of Bitten and Ten would be more like Footbare and Dare; if "footbare" was a word, of course.

message 3663: by Leora (new)

Leora Just finished task 5-3, I read "Death Walked In" by Carolyn Hart. I liked it, a light mystery in a series with charcters and setting that I enjoy. This is like the tenth book in the Death on Deman series and they are entertaining.

This brings my total to 305 points.

So they can be the same words right? Since 'ten' and 'ten' are the words that sound the same we could use two others words as long as they are exactly the same also? For example, 'ForGET' and 'GET a grip', if those were the titles, they would work?
I switch my books around a lot so this may be useful. I had no idea the same words would count as rhyming.

Jen B (jennybee618) 15 Point Tasks
2. Read a book of poetry

I just finished reading Nursery Rhyme Treasury, a large collection of traditional nursery rhymes. My son and I have been reading a few of these out loud before bed each night. I'd heard most of them before, and I loved hearing his reaction to them ("Peter Piper Picked A Peck of Pickled Peppers" was a huge hit).

I also finished the "G" part of Karen's task (25.1) with Glamour by Louise Bagshawe, which was much too soap-opera for my liking. But I still managed to finish...no points for that task yet, though!

New Point total: 75

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I checked that website, because I was getting paranoid... haha... I'll either use twice/mice or smart/heart. I haven't quite decided yet....

I wish I had more time to read lately! My husband is a HUGE distraction when he's sick!! (To quote Anastasia (animated movie), "Men are such babies!") We have a 3-day weekend coming up though, so I plan to read a lot then. Plus, hubby doesn't get Friday off, so it will just be me... and the dogs.... and the cats.... oh boy...

I just finished reading Courting Trouble by Deanne Gist for the Spring Vacation task - it takes place in Texas where I went for my friends wedding last month. Deanne Gist writes historical Christian Fiction books that I really enjoy - this was a bit more preachy than her first two but it had a really good story and characters that we're flawed but interesting.

It was very appropriate for me to read this "mother's book" challenge at this time as I am going through a rough patch with my mom who had a stroke during surgery last year and has basically lost the majority of her short term memory. This memoir reminded me of my mom when she was strong and willing to do almost anything. She still is strong willed and is fighting through this battle. It sounds silly, but I felt a little empowered every time I opened the book after a rough day with her, because I saw much of her past in the spunk and spitfire of Ms. Hellman.

This brings my total to 135 points.

Oh, as a note I have changed my choice for #15.4 as the book was not what I had expected. I am now reading from a prior Spring vacation: "San Francisco Is Burning: The Untold Story of the 1906 Earthquake and Fires" by Dennis Smith.

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) I finished a couple more tasks this week
5 pt tasks
7. Phantom of the Opera (e-book)
9. Trumpet of the Swan

25 pt tasks
3. Across the Nightingale Floor/ The Story of Edgar Sawtelle

Kritika's total points

I had really mixed feelings about
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle A Novel. I really liked some parts of the book, and other parts just dragged on and on. I didn't think the Chequamegon and Forte's Children parts needed to be so long. The book took me a long time to read, especially b/c I would skim a long description, read more, figure I missed something important, and have to read the whole part again. It got rather annoying. I loved the ending of the book though. It was so surprising and moving. It took me a while to figure out what was happening, but I was so shocked when... well, I'll not spoil it.
I actually started The Phantom of the Opera in 5th grade, and I didn't understand it so I didn't finish it. Now that I have read it again, I can say amazing . The book was very intense and I couldn't guess what would happen until the very last few moments. I watched the 2004 movie right after I read it, and I was surprised at how much of the story the movie changed. They were both very good and I enjoyed them.

Liz M Cynthia,

I believe my total should have been 235 pts (See message 3672). And I've completed another task.

8. In Honor of Memorial and Armed Forces Day – Read a book about a veteran OR someone serving in the military (fiction or non-fiction): The Eye in the Door. (10 pts.)

The second book in a trilogy, a quick engrossing read, but perhaps not as wonderful as the first.

Tasks Completed: 14/39
Pages Read: 4904
New Total: 245 pts.

Bridgit | 475 comments Just finished task 15.5 - a book written by an author who won a major literary prize in the year you were born. I chose Dick Francis (an Edgar in 1981). I was a little hesitant to do this challenge, but I actually loved it! And I think I have discovered a new (to me) author that I am going to go out and start reading all of his work.

Total Points: 340

5. Read a book written by an author who won a major literary prize (Nobel, Pulitzer etc.) in the year you were born (it does not have to be the book they won the award for).
Enemies: A Love Story- Isaac Bashevis Singer

This belongs in the group of books I'd have never picked up if not for a specific reason. I really wasn't looking forward to it at all and would have waited until I'd finished all the tasks with books I was looking forward to reading if I hadn't found this so easily on bookmooch.
I was pleasantly surprised, which is nice since I may use Isaac Bashevis Singer for the magician task also, with the entire book. It's supposed to be a love story and in a way it is but it's so much more. The fact that it's revolves around the lives of Holocaust survivors was interesting too because I read a lot of non-fiction survivor stories and I had no idea that played such a lareg roll in this.
Singer's writing is wonderful- I definitely would recommend to almost anyone. Usually a 'love story' holds no interest for me but this was nothing if not fascinating!

Did you like Perks? I read that for a different task in this challenge. I thought it was okay but didn't really understand all the fuss made about it. It was just average for me.

message 3699: by Heather (new)

Heather Wow. I think we've spent more time saying what doesn't rhyme on this thing than that particular challenge was worth. I didn't know we were being so picky about exactly where the rhyme is. Oh well, apparently including the task I just completed, I now only have 100 points.

So...Would Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea work for 5.8?

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) I think the reason people are being picky is because they don't want to have their points wrong and then have confusion result. If they ask Cynthia and everyone is clear than Cynthia's work will be easier and everyone will be following the same rules.

Like your question about Handler's book for that task!
