Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I read Girl in Blue by Ann Rinaldi for my military book task. I became a huge fan of Ann Rinaldi in Jr. High, and I still like to read what she's written. I had this one lying around, but hadn't read it, and figured this was a good time...
I really liked this book, like I've liked just about all I've read by Ann Rinaldi. It was easy to read, but not dumb, and I felt like I really got to know the characters. The only complaint I have is that I wish she had resolved one plot line... Oh well. I still liked it.

That gives me a total of 215!

Elizabeth (Alaska) Had to stay up and finish Light a Penny Candle by Maeve Binchy, whose birthday is May 28.

10.4

I think that brings me up to a whopping 55 points.

Elizabeth, that means we can read her books for that task/ I didn't know that was her birthday or didn't give it enough attention to make the link. Great. I have a box with three books written by her and I can't use them for every task here :-) But maybe now I will be able! Thanks!! By the way, did you like the book? Haven't read that one yet.

message 2710: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Sorry, Jeane, perhaps I should have said more. I like everything I've read of hers and this was no exception. I start out thinking it's just a nice book (not little, nearly 600 pages) and the next thing I'm completely caught up in it. She writes about people I'm sure I know, people who live and laugh and love. Yes, I liked it.

message 2711: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Elizabeth, I think my first book was Quentins. didn't know her books but liked the title. I got completely absorbed by it. It is true the way she writes about people and their lives it seems like it is about people who live and like you say laugh and love even if they don't have a perfect life. I can't remember the last book I read by her but it did the same with me. Oh, it was evening classes. Loved it and it had the bonus that a part was in Italy. So the country of my heart and the country where i live now. I am looking forward to pick out the first book of the box!

have you read cecilia Ahern books? I liked a lot Thanks for the memories. different writting than Binchy but I also seem to like her books. I adore of both that some palces they mention in dublin I know now and walked there. It gives an extra feeling to the description, like you can really feel what the character is feeling and seeing.

message 2712: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) My first was Circle of Friends. No I haven't read Cecilia Ahern. What are you doing to me, Jeane? I have enough problems with too many books already? ;)

By the way, team, that brings my points skyrocketing to a dizzying 20. ;-)

Bridgit | 475 comments I just finished A Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood as the first half of Angela's task. I picked the book off of Jen's list. Boy, was this book interesting. I was completely gripped by the alternate reality Atwood created here. The story was both fascinating and terrifying and really made me think. I love books that take you into a completely new world like this. It makes you realize what a slippery slope some of our own privacy and safety laws can really become. I highly recommend this to anyone who hasn't read it yet!

Now I am off to read Something Borrowed to complete the rest of Angela's task.

Leora Just finished El's 25 point task, I read 'Boswell's London Journal 1762-1763'. It took me a week, had to mix it in with fun stuff. It's an interesting look at a bachelors life in that era (lot's of prostitutes and 1 case of gonorhea). A bit tedious though because he basically does the same stuff everyday.

This brings my point up to 205.

message 2730: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 155 comments Finished Karen's 25 point task with The Road and Goodnight Nobody.

The Road was #1 on Entertainment Weekly's list of new classics, but is on my list of Worst Books Ever.

Goodnight Nobody is another solid chick lit entry from Jennifer Weiner, it makes me value my friends and reminds me that I'm so not ready for children. :)

New total: 80 points

Sara, I hated it the whole way through. I remember seeing you stopped and I felt so abandoned! :)

I was yelling the whole time how stupid they were. There were only two parts that were gross, so if you stopped on the second, you probably got through the worst of it. That said, the story never picked up, just got more repetitive so I don't feel like you missed much.

message 2732: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I actually liked The Road. I'll agree that it was bleak, and unrelenting and even frustrating at times, but I felt like I was there with them during the whole thing, and for an author to suck me in like that, I have to give him credit. I also loved how the father was 100% committed to his son. Yes, he made mistakes, but who doesn't? Everything that he did was for his son.

Not to mention that I am just fascinated by end of the world type scenarios anyway. I really enjoy reading about them. :)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I just finished Chez Moi for the translation task - um what to say about this book - I just hated it - I don't know there was way too too much imagery and I just couldn't connect to the story at all - it probably lost a lot translation but not one I would recommend at all. But it got me another 15 points and that's about the only good thing I can say about it.

Next I switched something around and I'm going to read The Incredible Origins of the Onyx Sun for Bonnie's Non-Regular Genre Task - it's science fiction which is totally not my thing but I got it as a free copy from the author here on goodreads and I have been looking for a task to use it for since I got it.

I was able to figure out what task you completed by going back to your comments but in the future I'd prefer that you say which 5, 10, 15, or 25 point task you have done in the post directly... i.e. it would have helped if you had either said you did the 10 point task number 4 or said you did the author who was born in march, april, may task just so I can keep things straight.

Jen B (jennybee618) I'm changing around a few books on my list, so I'm now claiming some points for a book I finished on 3/11. I was going to use it as half of my rhyming task, but I'm going to use different books for that one, so I found an interview with the author instead

15 Point Tasks
8. Get To Know The Author - Read a book by an author AND then either attend a reading by that author OR read/listen to an interview with that author.

Fashionably Late by Beth Kendrick
