Jessica | 1000 comments 10 point task
9. Read a book from the TNBBC Top Books list…
- The book can not be your own contribution
- The number that corresponds to that book must only contain numbers that can be found in the year you were born…i.e. if you were born in 1982 (like me) you could read 1, 28, or 89 but not 93, 15, or 22 (because there is only one 2 in the date) etc.
I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I just finished El's diarist task. I read Walden by Henry David Thoreau.
I was really disappointed in this book. I have wanted to read it for a while, and was excited to get to it, but I could not get into this book. Thoreau seems very presumptuous, and self-righteous when he is telling you what he thinks of most people, and other times he just rambles on about nothing.
I will probably try to read it again in a few years, to see if I appreciate it anymore. There were a few times that I really liked something that he had to say, and I would like to buy a copy to mark. But for now, at least I can say, Well yes, I have read Walden. ;)

Rach (rachlovestv) | 104 comments One more task down! For 5 Point task #2, I read PostSecret by Frank Warren. Some secrets sent in to this project were shocking, some were funny, most were very emotional. I can only imagine the release and relief one feels when you finally set your own secret loose into the wild.

New point total: 115.

Jessica | 18 comments I just finished New Worlds, Lost Worlds: The Rule of the Tudors, 1485-1603 for Jon's 25.6 task. That was a tough task Jon but well worth the effort. Now I finally know the difference between Mary I England ("Bloody Mary") and Mary I of Scotland, (Mary, Queen of Scots).

I also finished the audio book Sword Song by Bernard Cornwell for the 5.7 Arbor Day task.

That brings my total to 155. Only 19 days remaining to try to reach 200 points.

Josie (maid_marian) I finally finished task 15.9, for which I read The Woman in White, and had cauliflower and mashed potato with my tea tonight - I liked The Woman in White while I was reading it, but whenever I put it down, I had no urge to pick it up again...

message 5662: by [deleted user] (new)

I know what you mean, Josie. I'm at the end right now, and am having a hard time finishing it. I think it's because originally it was written in episodes, published weekly or monthly or something, so it's drawn out and repetitive.

Mini reviews of recently read books:
Are You There Vodka? Its me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler is a comical book which pushes some of the issue around female sexuality and family among other things. It reads much like some of the pathetic memoir and memoir like books I have read recently except it was a quite bit more funny, which thank goodness is the point. I did however, experience some conflicting emotions when reading this which ranged from annoyance to laughing my head off.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is another heart breaking book by the author.
It portrays a time when California was mostly farms instead of the network of freeways it has become today. It questions the nature of friendship and protection the ones you love.

Don't feel bad. I read it for this challenge as well, and I don't understand why it is considered a classic. I also thought it was pointless and horrible.

I feel the exact same way. I had to read it in high school and I thought it was terrible. Definitely not my kind of classic.

Bridgit | 475 comments Just finished Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible for the 5 point Arbor Day task. This one took me a while, but I am glad that i pushed through and read it. The writing in this was beautiful and I feel humbled by the beauty and agony that is Africa. In the end, I really loved this book and I think it will become a favorite of mine over time. But boy was it a long read for 5 points!

Amy C | 17 comments Completed 5.2 the epistolary novel option. 84 Charing Cross Road. This was a touching book. There were a number of letters related to Helen sending Frank and the others at the book store "care packages" because of rationing in England. I had no idea that the rationing went on for years after WWII.

New Tally
5 x 5 = 25
5 x 15 = 75
3 x 25 = 75

The Sun Also Rises was the first Hemingway book I read (and still my favorite) but I think I may be in the minority about that.

Congratulations to all the people who have finished!
Sadly I don't think I'm going to make my goal-The past few weeks I've been working overtime like crazy, got sick, and had two out-of-town visitors so I've barely done any reading at all in May! Better luck for summer hopefully.

9. Read a book with a color in the title AND eat a meal that includes at least 2 foods that are that color: The Woman in White

Tonight for dinner I will eat "chinese" cauliflower (ginger, and red pepper) and for dessert vanilla ice cream.

I agree on the Unfortunate Events. I really enjoyed the first one and I love how he uses big words or phrases and then explains what they mean (great for kids), but I found the end one tiring and I don't think he tied the series up very well. (Of course I had to read them all--once I start, I have a hard time not finishing a series--my own issues!)
