I really liked it, actually. I read it back in the 6th grade, but I didn't remember much about it, so I'm glad I read it again. It's a clever story, and the variety of characters is fun. I enjoyed it as an audiobook, because it was almost comical to listen to the narrator try to do so many accents! :)

Total Points: 470

This brings me to 365 points!

I'm reading this right now with my class. I love it--it's always a favorite and great fun to reread because you can see all of the clues you missed.

As an aside, can someone recommend ideas for 25.7 (movie-referenced book)? I'm not really in the mood for Austen or The Devil Wears Prada, which seems to be what most people are using. I'm coming up zeroes on this one so far.

3. Thanks to Elizabeth (Alaska) I read Olive Kitteridge A Novel in Stories & The Measure of a Man A Spiritual Autobiography.
I liked both of the books. Poitier's book was kind of slow and seemed to jump around quite a bit but it was very interesting and I enjoyed it. I liked Olive Kitteridge was also enjoyable. There were some of the "stories" that I wish were longer and others that I was glad that they were over!!
Thanks Elizabeth :)

Task 10.9 (#9) The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath puts my pithy problems into perspective. As Esther Greenwood spiraled into what was then fondly referred to as a nervous breakdown, I ran three stop signs, hit the breakdown strip twice and got a speeding ticket (not my fault, really, but try convincing the State Police...)

Bev - I, too, read this work as a direct result of Jon's challenge and I cannot agree with your review any more heartily. I am so impressed with Weir's research and writing style that I've recommended this piece to every one of my reader-friends and I am considering which of her publications I am going to delve into next !

5. Read a book written by an author who won a major literary prize in the year you were born - Without Reservations: The Travels of an Independent Woman
by Alice Steinbach who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1985.
It was a good read!
15 points, making my total 420.

15.10--Undead & Unappreciated, Undead & Unreturnable, and Undead & Unpopular by Mary Janice Davidson.
These books aren't the usual sort that I read, but for some reason I find them charming. I was happy with UNAPPRECIATED and UNPOPULAR, but found UNRETURNABLE a little slow with nothing really happening.
This brings my total to 275 points.
With still 25 to go I don't know if I will finish, but I am enjoying the ride!!

Hi Kim, welcome. The challenges are a lot of fun. I love looking at the books everyone chooses! (And don't worry about your TBR pile... it will explode!)

About the challenge... you can use any books that you have read in the past two months as well... so if you have read any books in the last two months that you can fit into a challenge category, do that so you can have more points!!!

Edward VI: The Lost King of England by Chris Skidmore
I found this book interesting, in terms of reading about a child king of England (Henry VIII's son) and the importance of his reign on the English Reformation. However, I thought it was a bit dry and the text didn't seem to flow well.
And since that boo was just shy of 400 pages, I listened to this audiobook as well:
Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart by John Guy
So, I was somewhat disappointed to realize after I had finished listening to this that it was an abridged version. However, I really enjoyed listening to it. I think because it was abridged it felt more like a narrative. The political intrigue was interesting with all the murder plots and the feud between Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I.
I also finished 25.7:
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
total points: 525

There is now a wonderful series on HBO based on this series with Jill Scott starring. You should check it out if you get a chance

Total points: 535
Just five more books to go:
10.7 (Mother's Day)Barbara Delinsky - Suddenly
5.10 (Arbor Day) Barbara Kingsolver - Poisonwood Bible
10.6 (Earth Day)Beth Ciotta - Lasso the Moon
10.1 (Ireland) Frank Delaney - Tipperary
5.6 (Women's History)Sally Smith O'Rourke - Maidenstone lighthouse

She frowned and called him Mr.
Because he boldly kr.
And so in spite

This Mr. Kr. Sr. "
Haha!! That's clever and totally adorable!

Task 25.9 - 12+ word title: The Boyfriend List: 15 guys, 11 shrink appointments, 4 ceramic frogs, and me, Ruby Oliver by E. Lockhart (5/5/09)
This was a reread (in preparation for my oldest TBR, which is a sequel to this), and I think I liked it even better this time! Poor Ruby!!! High school sure can be HELL sometimes! Fortunately, I had really good, loyal friends....

SANDY'S 50 POINT MIDWAY TASK
***Read 2 books by an author who writes under two different names. For example, Nora Roberts also writes under the name J.D. Robb, so you would read a book by J.D. Robb and a book by Nora Roberts.***For this task ONE book can have been read prior to APRIL 15TH but the other must have been read after that date.
Daughters of Spain by Jean Plaidy & Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt
The latter book is a recently republished stand alone book that used to part of a trilogy. The stand alone version is not listed on GR.
The Plaidy book was interesting, but not as good as her later historical fiction novels. The Holt book was all right. I'm not into the romance genre, and although the writing was good, I found the story to be very predictable.

6. Women's History Month: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larson

I really liked this book, but it was disheartening to get only 5 points after roundabout 500 pages! I need to pick smaller books for the little ones. :)

10 Point Tasks
7. In Honor of Mother’s Day…
- Read a book recommended by/given to you by your mother.
I read The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen, which was from my mom.
I originally read this as part of the rhyming task, but I'm thinking I might not get to the other book I had planned for that task, so I'm using this one for the mom task instead.

I've never heard that anyone but Jim Dale (love him) narrated for HP. Do you have a preference, or is Fry the only one you've heard?

I guess Jim Dale narrated the US version and Stephen Fry the UK version. I've only heard the ones by Fry, but I loved those.

Stephen Fry narrated my audio book selection of Hitchhiker"s Guide to the Galaxy - I was thoroughly engaged - I am def. picking up his H.P.'s

Read The Hippopotamus Pool by Elizabeth Peters and read an interview with her at bookbrowse.com.
I've now hit my original target of 300 points which I never thought I'd do. I'm really enjoying the challenge and can't wait for the summer one.

For 10 points I read...The New Moon's Arms by Nalo Hopkinson
(New total: 530 points)

I agree, I thought he was amazing! I would switch back and forth between the audio and the physical copy of the book (audio when I was cleaning and driving, and physical copy the rest of the time). I got so used to his wonderful narration that it was still his voice I heard when I was reading the physical book.
Incidentally, I just found out that he has also narrated audiobooks of Peter Pan, Alice and Wonderland, and A Christmas Carol (all unabridged). I put requests in at the library for all of them and I can't wait!
Oh, and not to leave Stephen Fry out - I thought his narration of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was fantastic. I found the story much more humorous listening to it on audio as opposed to actually reading it, and I think he's the reason why.
