How did you like it? I know very very little about the book, but I've wanted to read it ever since I saw that episode of Veronica Mars where Mac learns her family's deep dark secret.... ;)

I really liked it, actually. I read it back in the 6th grade, but I didn't remember much about it, so I'm glad I read it again. It's a clever story, and the variety of characters is fun. I enjoyed it as an audiobook, because it was almost comical to listen to the narrator try to do so many accents! :)

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Whew! I finally finished reading In the Shadow of the Dreamchild A New Understanding of Lewis Carroll for El's diarist task 25.2. It wasn't a proper biography in that it mainly focused on debunking the myth that Dodgson/Carroll was a pedophile, but it was still very interesting.

I'm reading this right now with my class. I love it--it's always a favorite and great fun to reread because you can see all of the clues you missed.

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) I finished reading Anne of Green Gables and ate lime yogurt and a green golden delicous apple for 15 point task 9, 1984 by George Orwell for 5pt task 3,the third, fourth and fifth of the Charlie Bone series for 15pt task 10, The Giver (which won a newberry in 1994) for 15pt task 5, and Malgudi Days (which my mom gave me) for 10pt task 7.

Kritika's total points

Jessica (sureshot26) | 94 comments I've now finished 15.5 (prize winner in birth year) with The Cider House Rules - John Irving won the National Book Award in 1980 for The World According to Garp. I also completed 5.1 (sci-fi or fantasy) with Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book, which is easily in my top 5 books this year - I loved it on every level.

Current Total: 385
Super-revised Goal: 500

As an aside, can someone recommend ideas for 25.7 (movie-referenced book)? I'm not really in the mood for Austen or The Devil Wears Prada, which seems to be what most people are using. I'm coming up zeroes on this one so far.

3. Thanks to Elizabeth (Alaska) I read Olive Kitteridge A Novel in Stories & The Measure of a Man A Spiritual Autobiography.

I liked both of the books. Poitier's book was kind of slow and seemed to jump around quite a bit but it was very interesting and I enjoyed it. I liked Olive Kitteridge was also enjoyable. There were some of the "stories" that I wish were longer and others that I was glad that they were over!!

Thanks Elizabeth :)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Rebel Angels & The Sweet Far Thing - I wasn't sure when I picked this series to use in the challenge that I would really want to read them - thus I left them toward the end. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed them more than I expected - I wish things had ended slightly different in the last book (I don't know if she plans to continue the series but I think more could be told) - but other than that I'm glad to have read them. Fantasy is still not my favorite genre and probably never will be - but the historical aspects of it helped me appreciate it more - and again I haven't read YA material since I was a teen and probably won't pick up another for a good long while. I gave all 3 books 4 stars I would give 4.5 if possible.

Task 10.9 (#9) The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath puts my pithy problems into perspective. As Esther Greenwood spiraled into what was then fondly referred to as a nervous breakdown, I ran three stop signs, hit the breakdown strip twice and got a speeding ticket (not my fault, really, but try convincing the State Police...)

15.10--Undead & Unappreciated, Undead & Unreturnable, and Undead & Unpopular by Mary Janice Davidson.

These books aren't the usual sort that I read, but for some reason I find them charming. I was happy with UNAPPRECIATED and UNPOPULAR, but found UNRETURNABLE a little slow with nothing really happening.

Amy C | 17 comments Tonight I finished No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency for 25.5. It was outside of my normal reading because it was a mystery and a series. I thought this was a great book. I really love the character Mma Ramotswe.

3 x 15 = 45
1 x 25 = 90

Kim I've just joined this group today- so I might have a go at this challenge for the rest of the month and see how I get on. Then I'll set myself a target in the summer challenge. I've printed this off to have a think about the books in my tbr pile!

About the challenge... you can use any books that you have read in the past two months as well... so if you have read any books in the last two months that you can fit into a challenge category, do that so you can have more points!!!

message 5476: by KristenR (new)

KristenR (klrenn) I finished Jon's task, 25.6:

Edward VI: The Lost King of England by Chris Skidmore

I found this book interesting, in terms of reading about a child king of England (Henry VIII's son) and the importance of his reign on the English Reformation. However, I thought it was a bit dry and the text didn't seem to flow well.

And since that boo was just shy of 400 pages, I listened to this audiobook as well:

Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart by John Guy

So, I was somewhat disappointed to realize after I had finished listening to this that it was an abridged version. However, I really enjoyed listening to it. I think because it was abridged it felt more like a narrative. The political intrigue was interesting with all the murder plots and the feud between Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I.

I also finished 25.7:

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving

SANDY'S 50 POINT MIDWAY TASK
***Read 2 books by an author who writes under two different names. For example, Nora Roberts also writes under the name J.D. Robb, so you would read a book by J.D. Robb and a book by Nora Roberts.***For this task ONE book can have been read prior to APRIL 15TH but the other must have been read after that date.

Daughters of Spain by Jean Plaidy & Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt

The latter book is a recently republished stand alone book that used to part of a trilogy. The stand alone version is not listed on GR.

The Plaidy book was interesting, but not as good as her later historical fiction novels. The Holt book was all right. I'm not into the romance genre, and although the writing was good, I found the story to be very predictable.

Books Read: 13
Total Points: 195 + 50 = 245

6. Women's History Month: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larson

Points to Date: 225/575
Tasks Completed: 17/40

I really liked this book, but it was disheartening to get only 5 points after roundabout 500 pages! I need to pick smaller books for the little ones. :)

Jen B (jennybee618) I'm switching things around a bit, and claiming points for a book I finished a couple of weeks ago:

10 Point Tasks
7. In Honor of Mother’s Day…
- Read a book recommended by/given to you by your mother.

I read The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen, which was from my mom.

I originally read this as part of the rhyming task, but I'm thinking I might not get to the other book I had planned for that task, so I'm using this one for the mom task instead.

New Point Total: 200

Jamie | 30 comments Just finished:
10.4 The Feast of the Goat by Mario Vargas Llosa - terrific book, 5 star read for me.

New pt total: 75

message 5487: by Leora (new)

Leora Just read 'Alice in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll, so I am really excited to fit it into 25-7 since it was in the movie Pagemaster.

So that's 465 points for me now!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Amy - I've enjoyed most of Weir's books that I've read, but you might not want to make Henry VIII The King and His Court your next one - it's rather dry. To make Henry boring is quite a feat, but she pulls it off, here.

I just finished her The Life of Elizabeth I, which I really enjoyed, though.

I've never heard that anyone but Jim Dale (love him) narrated for HP. Do you have a preference, or is Fry the only one you've heard?

I guess Jim Dale narrated the US version and Stephen Fry the UK version. I've only heard the ones by Fry, but I loved those.

I agree, I thought he was amazing! I would switch back and forth between the audio and the physical copy of the book (audio when I was cleaning and driving, and physical copy the rest of the time). I got so used to his wonderful narration that it was still his voice I heard when I was reading the physical book.

Incidentally, I just found out that he has also narrated audiobooks of Peter Pan, Alice and Wonderland, and A Christmas Carol (all unabridged). I put requests in at the library for all of them and I can't wait!

Oh, and not to leave Stephen Fry out - I thought his narration of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was fantastic. I found the story much more humorous listening to it on audio as opposed to actually reading it, and I think he's the reason why.
