That is what I was thinking, but then I thought that maybe because they are so disgusting, and you normally associate cute animals with spring animals, that maybe Cynthia wouldn't consider them a spring animal so I though I would check before I read my book.

Cute!

I guess I'm just thinking that, yes, 3 rhymes with sea, but Cynthia decided WAAAAY back at the beginning of the challenge what rhymes would be acceptable (perfect rhymes between two unique words), and to change that now would be be unfair to everyone else who wanted to use numbers to rhyme book titles. Perhaps if you had stated your points (which are totally valid) at the beginning, it would be different, but at this point, it's too late to change the rules.

Can you do a little juggling to fit one of the books into a different category and then pick a new book to rhyme?

Kristina (klonk) Just finished task number 4 for 25 points, which was to read a book from the BBC BigReads list that was linked in the task, and I read: Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery.

Points so far: 115.

Snails love all the rain we get in the spring time. We shall see what Cynthia says... What book are you wanting to read that has SNAIL in the title??

I've picked a spring animal title book (Bad Kitty by Michele Jaffe), but I haven't read it yet. I was thinking about reading Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore, but if it was sacreligious about Jesus... I don't know if I... well, I'm just not going to go there.

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Finished the 50 pointer last night - I just meant to get the other book Kiss The Bride started before but before I knew it I was finishing it. It was a nice easy historical romance that had a little surprising twist towards the end - I'm really glad for this challenge because I don't think I would have ever read this otherwise - I've had Meg Cabot's books written for adults on my to read list for awhile but had no plans to read stuff she had written under pseudonyms till now. Next I'm going to read People of the Book for the Anzac task - since I already did the group read task - I still can't believe that it got picked for May's read - this is the first book that I've suggested that's been chosen or even come close.

Jamie Cynthia - I just started People of the Book last night and I'm loving it so far!

message 5158: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I hadn't really thought about hibernation in terms of determining whether an animal was "spring" or not but if that was the case then a lot of animals would be - that's not really what I was looking for so I don't think snail works - especially when there are so many other options already for that task.

I never thought the rhyming task would spark so much debate when I put it in the challenge - I thought it would be pretty cut and dry - i.e. Blue/Clue/Shoe/New or Man/Tan/Ban/Ran etc. there are so many words out there like that - that it would be fairly easy for people to come up with something. The number thing came up earlier in the game and perhaps I should have added it to the original task posting but again I wouldn't have thought most people would even think of a digit when trying to rhyme something - just never occurred to me.

Running this challenge is still a fairly new thing for me - this is the only the 3rd TNBBC designed challenge I've done so less than a year and there are kinks that always have to worked out - and I don't expect to make everyone happy but in the end I hope everyone has a good time, discovers some new favorite books or authors, maybe reads a book or two outside the box, and clears some books off (if their anything like me - massive) to read lists. That's all I really wanted when I decided to do this.

I don't know the current "in" lingo to say you're the cat's pajamas for this. I am having a marvelous time, approaching books in a way I might not have done, and reading a ton more. It's a smashing success!

message 5160: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Amen Cynthia... well said. You cannot make everyone happy. And this is a challenge, so it is not really meant to be 'easy'.

message 5161: by Steph (new)

Steph Completed, for 15 points:
5. Read a book written by an author who won a major literary prize (Nobel, Pulitzer etc.) in the year you were born (it does not have to be the book they won the award for).

I read Enemies A Love Story by Isaac Singer, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978.

I definitely think you're achieving your goals - I love this challenge, as I think most of us do, and it's more about reading things we wouldn't otherwise than anything. The competition can be motivating but in the end its all about the books. Kudos to you for taking it all on!

Saranicole, I've read Lamb and have had a Christian upbringing. From what I remember, Lamb does not mock Jesus, nor does it paint him in a bad light. Here's a good review which puts it more eloquently than I can, it might help you to decide if you really want to read it: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....

I just read this a couple of weeks ago and loved it. I admit, I'm not a regular church-goer, but it doesn't paint Jesus in a bad light, if anything it makes him human, which if you are someone who wants to put Jesus on a pedestal that could potentially be a problem.

For example Jesus states he will never have sex, but he wants to understand why it's sinful and why people are so drawn to it, so he encourages Biff to have sex to explain it to him, and of course the process is a comedy of errors. If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea then stay away, but it was a funny book.

I think you are doing a great job. I have read some great books outside my normal genre I would never have thought to pick up before. I have also taken small (really, really small) steps to read some books on my shelf. A lot of these things I would have never done without the challenge. I can't wait until the next one! Keep up the good work :)

message 5172: by Julie (ID) (new)

Julie (ID) Just a couple of books...
For task 5-7 I read Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyers.

For task 10-8 I read Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks
Quite liked this one. I've read a lot of books of WWII but not very many on WWI.

For task 15-6 I read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

So I think my total is now 130 pts. Thanks

Lori (batchelorxyz) | 158 comments I finished Yule: A Celebration of Light and Warmth by Dorothy Morrison for task 25.5. I very rarely read non-fiction of any kind. I found this book while looking for something to rhyme with Fool.

It has a lot of recipes, and crafts and directions in it. But I read them all. The way she describes making things and blessing them I found quite fascinating. It is full of the history of Yule and all the things that go with the Winter season. I really enjoyed reading it and may be checking it out again when the season rolls around.

I also want to move one of the books I have already read. I want to move Ella Minnow Pea to the 5.8 task. I found it very humourous...it had me laughing out loud in places. And I want to add Address Unknown by Kressmann Taylor in the 5.2 task spot for an epistolary novel. It isn't anywhere near 100 pages long, but it is a terrific book.

I believe with the two new books and one trade that brings my total to 295. 300 I am gonna getcha, just you wait and see. LOL

And I just want to add my thanks to Cynthia for providing us with such a fun way to expand our reading experience and volume. I have had such a good time with the Spring Challenge that I wouldn't miss the Summer one for the world. And I have a ton of suggestions for you too when the time comes. :)

message 5176: by Heather (new)

Heather I finished the 15 point rhyming task:
15.7 No Time to Hide by Rob Palmer and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith, with a little help from Jane Austen.

I never, in my wildest dreams, thought I'd like "zombie literature" but I love P&P&Z! So funny and I find myself cheering out loud when dislikable characters received their come uppance.

New Total: 200 points

Darn, she didn't accept it. I though for sure it was a spring animal because I always see them in the spring. You're right, it is because of the rain and stuff. I wanted to read Snail Mail, No More. It is the squal to the book I just read, P.S. Longer Letter Later.

message 5178: by Sam (new)

Sam (archieleach9) | 82 comments @Amy - You should have ended it with "So move on and eat some green eggs and ham." More appropriate and less "this is why the internet is stupid."

@Sara - That's why I wished she had updated her first thread with clarification or mentioned the earlier ruling when she rejected the rhyme initially. There's, like, 5k posts here, and I'm late to the game. It's not that important because...

@El - It is just a game, as you say. I came in late and was just trying to shoehorn what I had already read and was planning to read in the list. Naturally, things would have been a lot easier if I hadn't jumped in mid-game. I'll just have to decide if I want to play next time.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Sam, we have as yet no clue as to what the Summer Challenge might have for us. But I have looked at the Fall and Winter Challenges, and this one is heads above. Without trying to pressure Cynthia in any way, I'm sure we can expect something equally as interesting come summer. I personally look forward to seeing what reads you manage to match up with the tasks.

Tracy (iowadreamer) | 41 comments An update, finally. (I've actually finished two books, but one is part of a two-book task, and haven't finished the other.) I did finish a new 10-point task (the gift from my mother) -- and I wouldn't have read this, if she hadn't given it to me. The first few chapters were a little odd, so normally I would have shelved it and come back some other time, maybe. For Mom, I kept going. And it was worth it -- very good book, after all!

5 points:
1. A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L'Engle
2. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society (I just finished this, but I can't wait to read it again!)
3. The Enchanted Castle, E. Nesbit
4.
5. The Redemption, M. L. Tyndall
6. Myself When Young, Daphne DuMaurier
7. Gone for Soldiers (book on CD), Jeff Shaara
8. Round Ireland with a Fridge, Tony Hawks
9. Lamb in Love, Carrie Brown
10. The Bean Trees, Barbara Kingsolver

10 points:
1. Nights of Rain and Stars, Maeve Binchy
2. Under the Volcano, Malcolm Lowry
3. The Australian Stories, T. James Pierce
4. Moon Tiger, Penelope Lively
5. Inkheart, Cornelia Funke
6. The Wind on the Moon, Eric Linklater
7. Sufficient Grace, Darnell Arnoult (a gift from my mom)
8. The List, C. D. Baker
9. The Double Bind (#14 on the TNBBC list), Chris Bohjalian
10. The Screwtape Letters (Susan's list, joined 1/29/09), C. S. Lewis

15 points:
1. Museum Pieces, Elizabeth Tallent (set in New Mexico -- I'm a Scorpio)
2. Nine Horses (poetry), Billy Collins
3. Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen
4. The Blessing Way, Tony Hillerman
5. Epitaph for a Spy, Eric Ambler (winner of the Edgar award in... drumroll please... 1964)
6. Eye of the Leopard, Henning Mankell (translated from the Swedish)
7. The DAY I Ate Whatever I Wanted, Elizabeth Berg; I Am the CLAY, Chaim Potok
8. The Sunday Philosophy Club, Alexander McCall Smith (listening to a lecture given at our local library)
9. either The Golden Bowl, Henry James (if I'm up to Henry James) or The Golden Thread, N. McLeod (that way I don't have to come up with a new meal idea!)
10. The Third Angel, Alice Hoffman; The Fourth Angel, Suzanne Chazin; The Fifth Angel, Tim Green (I'll let you know if I find any unifying themes!)

25 points:
1. G is for Gumshoe, Sue Grafton; Rest and Be Thankful, Helen MacInnes
2. My Dearest Friend: Letters of Abigail and John Adams
3.
4. Winnie-the-Pooh, A. A. Milne
5. Road from Coorain, Jill Ker Conway (I don't read many memoirs/biographies)
6.
7.
8. Artemis Fowl, Eoin Cofer; I Capture the Castle, Dodie Smith
9.

Tracy (iowadreamer) | 41 comments Quick question...

I've been swamped with my regular life lately, and I've missed pages of this discussion. I tried scrolling through to find an explanation of the 50-point task, but I'm out of time.

Can anyone save me? I think it's to read books by the same author, writing under a pen name and his/her own name. But, aside from Ruth Rendell, does anyone have suggestions for me?

Thanks!

message 5184: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Tracy - It's actually noted on the first page:

"SANDY'S 50 POINT MIDWAY TASK
***Read 2 books by an author who writes under two different names. For example, Nora Roberts also writes under the name J.D. Robb, so you would read a book by J.D. Robb and a book by Nora Roberts.***For this task ONE book can have been read prior to APRIL 15TH but the other must have been read after that date."

Hope that helps!

Also, right around pages 90/91 is when people started discussing the 50-pointer & throwing out suggestions.

Kristen Harvey Just read Come in from the Cold for my veteran read. It's set during Vietnam and was a really sweet YA romance.

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Wow, Kristen, you only have 3 more books to read until you are done with this challenge! That is great!!!

message 5190: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey Four actually, but yeah.. I read and read and these past few weeks I've been reading a ton of other non-challenge books.. otherwise I would've already been done hehe. I'm not one for non-fiction and I only have two fiction book left.. so it may take me until the end of May to really work through those!

message 5191: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Oh, I forgot to count Wagner. Still. WOW!!! It is true, though, what you say about the non-fiction. They do take longer to read then the fiction books!

message 5192: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey I joke to my family that the little free time I have is spent reading. My fiance plays his video games and I read in the same room as him. Works out great for us. I can also read at both my jobs on and off during the day.

Jessica (sureshot26) | 94 comments Two adds for me - I finished 25.8 (two YA novels) with Eragon and The Amulet of Samarkand. Both were good, but Stroud is much more my taste in terms of characters I can connect with. I also completed 5.6 (Women's History Month) with T.C. Boyle's The Women, which is excellent. Can't recommend the audio edition without one small reservation, though - the exceptionally poor Japanese pronunciation had me flinching in places.

Current Total: 310
Goal: 300 initially; upping to 400 as I've a month to go

message 5195: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 35 comments Finished two more challenges:

15.9 The Crimson Thread: A Retelling of "Rumpelstiltskin" by Suzanne Weyn (and my friends took me out for lunch to Korean food where I had extremely "crimson versions" of spicy tofu soup and kimchee for my birthday :) )

25.1 A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray AND The Reluctant Suitor by Kathleen Woodiwiss

I'm having so much fun, but my stack of books just seems to keep growing as I retrieve my "holds" from the library.

New total: 220
