I tried to read 60 books this with the Goodreads challenge. I initially started out late and then, I'm not sure if it was because it was a challenge, began reading fiendishly. This was not the answer for me. I'm now onto something like book 15 or 16 since July but I've taken so many long breaks its astounding. I think I over indulged at the beginning.
I think maybe next year I'll be more realistic with my numbers and time frame, as well as plan a reading list instead of just picking up random books. I'm not a great decision maker.

I set 100 books as my goal for the reading challenge, and while I've been both ahead and behind at different points, now I'm right on track at 85 books so far this year. I think the trick is to switch it up and read lots of different kinds of books - a long book, then a short book... a deep, intellectual tome, then some quick brain candy. It keeps me excited about reading.
Also, I can't remember if I set any specific book goals this year (I thought I recalled the thread you're talking about but now I can't seem to find it), though I did manage to knock a few off my "bucket-list" shelf... Lolita, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, The Crying of Lot 49, Valley of the Dolls, Babel-17, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia.
I set 25 books as my reading challenge goal this year, then read like a demon for the first few months of 2012. Ended up changing the goal to 35, then 50. I finished book 49, and most of book 50...... then decided to amend the goal to 52.
That way it'll be an average of one book a week, which is pretty awesome for me! I had all but stopped reading entirely until about June last year, then I rediscovered the joys when I was going through a tricky time.

My picks were:
1) The Metamorphosis so that I could read The Meowmorphosis.
Fail AND fail.
2) I said A Game of Thrones - Except Derek convinced me this was a bad idea, or I'd only read Martin all year, and then still be waiting for the final instalment. So I replaced it with the Hater trilogy.
I've read Dog Blood but not Them or Us
3)Either People Live Still in Cashtown Corners or Idaho Winter by Tony Burgess.
I read and loved both.
Better get on that! Anyone else set themselves any goals this year? Did you make it?
