5. Time-Travel Romance The Pleasure Master finished 3/6/09

6. Vampire Romance La Vida Vampire finished 3/4/09

7. Romantic Fantasy Never Been Witched finished 3/3/09

8. Romantic Science Fiction/Futuristic Fantasy Ascendant Sun

9. Romantic Urban Fantasy Ghouls Just Haunt to Have Fun

Ok, yet another one down. I enjoyed Ghouls Just Haunt to Have Fun. The problem with this one is--if is book 3 in a series. If you haven't read books 1 and 2 (and I have) then it might be a little bit confusing, altho it CAN stand alone in a pinch. I do like Victoria Laurie, she writes a quick paced book that doesn't really give you a chance to yawn and think "and I'm reading this WHY???" I loved the portrail of the 2 fake mediums. Lol, they were just tooo stupid to believe. One ran around in a CAPE. Almost felt like he thought he was channeling Bela Lugosi as Dracula. :o)

I can't find my #8 book, Ascendant Sun, and am trying to figure it if was one that I needed to order--and didn't--or if I thought I had it. However, after investigating it, it seems that its book FIVE in a series, and I don't really want to read it that bad. So, anyone have suggestions for replacing that one?

And I'm hoping that on Monday UPS will deliever the last of my Alien books (one of the ones that was delayed by the nasty weather last week) so that I can read the 3 books of that series and get down to the one on my list. (And yes, I know I could use book #1, but I think I'm just going to read all 3 of them any way.) :o) Might as well, right?

Try any of Sandra Hill's Viking books. Just be careful WHICH of her Viking series you pick up. She actually has 2. Book 1 of the "good" one is called "The Last Viking" I have never been able to get into the "other" one, mostly I think because I just HATED book #1. The "last viking" series is comic, has really GREAT Viking's in it (including a couple of female time traveling Vikings) and also, in some of the newest books, includes Viking SEALS. Ok, as a Navy brat, I approve of anything having the SEALS in it. The Vikings in the Last Viking series are all related somehow. The first 3 books deal with the "senior" members of the family--3 brothers. The ones after that deal with the "second generation." The children of the 3rd brother. The newest one deals with a nephew of all the three brothers, (their sister's son) and the next one is supposed to deal with his brother. They are currently at 7 novels in that series.

As you might have noticed from the previous post, I too am out #8 now. Sigh, time to do some more delving into the previous PEARL winners for that category, I guess

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Hey, Ann. Have you read any of the "in death" series? I read the first one, "naked in death" for this challenge and have to say it was pretty good. Mystery set in 2058, with a shady but attractive Irish billionaire as the love interest. The main character is a female detective who comes across as very real.

Michelle, No I don't think so. I'll have to check it out tho. I was thinking about re-reading one of my (many) Andre Nortons--maybe Beastmaster's Circus or one of the last couple of Solar Queen books.

I just finished reading "Wait til Your Vampire Gets Home" by Michele Bardsley. I got it because it was nominated for one of the PEARLS. I had read one of her books before (I'm the Vampire, That's Why) and wasn't too impressed with it. But I really DID like this one, so I'm going to try to find copies of books 2 and 3. This one could be a Second book for Vampire category. :o)

Basically its set in Broken Heart, OK (at the start of the series, its "The Town With the Highest Divorce Rate in the Country") a little town that, since the start of the series has gone from its original title to "Town With the Highest Paranormal Population". This one features a somewhat harried (and klutzy in my opinion) paranormal hunter and a vampire single father. The book was extremely funny and my hubby kept asking me "what's so funny" because I kept giggling. So--I give it a 4.5 giggles out of 5.

Nicole (rednikki) | 31 comments Haven't finished another book, but I now have books filling two more slots, so it's time for an update!

1. ANTHOLOGY - Shifter by Angela Knight, Lora Leigh, Alyssa Day and Virginia Kantra (anyone read this one?)

2. FANTASY/MAGICAL Romance - Dinah McCall's Dreamcatcher. Not recommended.

3. FUTURISTIC Romance - TBD (The Best Little Bookstore had nothing that fit this category! Am going out hunting shortly.)

4. SHAPESHIFTER Romance - Soul Song by Marjorie M. Liu (anyone read her stuff? The Best Little Bookstore had a ton of things by her.)

5. TIME TRAVEL Romance - Legend by Jude Deveraux Plot holes galore!

6. VAMPIRE Romance- Lover Revealed by J.R. Ward

7. Romantic FANTASY: Susan Wright, To Serve and Submit Best described as Norse Kushiel's Dart Lite.

8. Romantic SCIENCE FICTION & FUTURISTIC FANTASY - Spider and Jeanne Robinson's The Star Dancers (so far, it's very good!)

9. Romantic URBAN FANTASY: Matthew Thomas, Before and After

That is a fantastic book! It's not time travel exactly, but it's really fascinating. The whole series is an amazing read.

Jacalyn | 454 comments Ann, I have Ascendant Sun maybe. It was one I was supposed to loan to you. Did i not give it over? I hope I have it because it is autographed.

Everyone else, I finished In the Garden of Iden. At least this one was a romance. It was OK, but it's not anything to whoppeee over. There wasn't really much to it, really. Nothing to overcome, that sort of thing. It was a window into the past, but that's it. But it took care of my time travel (sort of) so there is that.

I've moved on to another book... Dead Sexy, the sequel to a book I read last month.

message 159: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Nicole, you must have gotten more out of it than I did. It was OK, but I'm not so sure I'd say fantastic. I am not sure if I'll go seeking out the subsequent books. I have such a hefty load of TBR's... if I run out... maybe.

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Ann, good to know about the Bardsley books-I was already considering reading them, but since it got you giggling, I'll seek 'em out!

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Lady, it's so disappointing when you love the premise of a book and it just fails to deliver for you. Oh well, they can't all be a winner for every reader!

People, I'm finding that every time-travel description I read just doesn't peak my interest. I put Du Maurier on my list since it sorta qualifies and I want to read all of her books, but Lord only knows when the library will get its keister in gear and send it on over!

I'd considered Outlander, but
1. It's about a billion pages.
2. I read a summary and apparently the lead gets assaulted or almost assaulted at every turn?
I wasn't thrilled at the prospect.

Anyone have yays or nays on me reading Outlander?

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Update: 2 left!

1. ANTHOLOGY
Mysteria Lane
2. FANTASY/MAGICAL
Up in Smoke - Katie MacAllister
3. FUTURISTIC
Naked in Death - JD Robb
4. SHAPESHIFTER
The Accidental Werewolf - Dakota Cassidy
5. TIME TRAVEL
The House on the Strand - Daphne Du Maurier
6. VAMPIRE
High Stakes - Erin McCarthy
7. ROMANTIC FANTASY Shadowbridge - Gregory Frost
8. ROMANTIC SCI-FI/FANTASY
Urban Shaman - C.E. Murphy
9. ROMANTIC URBAN FANTASY
A Rush of Wings - Adrian Phoenix

High Stakes! I'd read some of McCarthy's short stories in the past and thought her funny. High Stakes is the first in the Vegas vampires series. Starts out a tad juvenile, with the main character constantly trying to kick a guy in the cajones before she's even heard a word from him.

As the book went on, I started to enjoy it-not for the main characters, but for the peripheral ones. I never took a shine to leading lady Alexis, but was intrigued enough by all of the other characters that I've got the second book ready to go!

message 163: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey When I talked to my old supervisor from the public library (who is a romance a holic) and I told her about this challenge, she said the best time travel romance is Outlander. Yes, its huge, but I'm gonna give it a shot, because I trust my romance expert.

message 164: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Michelle M, it is a total shame. I really think the problem I had was there wasn't ever really any meat to the story. It's like "random glance into the window of an English home"... so there's this political crazyness going on between the reformation and the catholic church in England, but it didn't truly affect anyone till the very end. And even then, it was still not really. So it was just this every day glance... nothing for the characters to overcome. I don't even think the main character grew from her "love and lost" deal.

So while the book was well written, the characters were interesting, with nothing really happening it just fell flat for me. :(

Good luck finding a time travel book. I chose this one, though technically there was no real time travel. The main character is actually of that time. Though she's been taken out by people of the future, turned into a cyborg, and sent with a bunch of anachronistic gear to gather up flora/fauna that's gone extinct in the future. I don't think I'd recommend this one, though it was a crazy fast read.

I enjoy time travel, but I sure don't seem to have a lot floating on my bookcase.

I've read four books this month, now. And only one do I know where I am going to put it in the challenge genre picks. But three are PEARL nominated books, so that's good! :) (I think Iden would have been prime for it since it actually did have romance, but I think it was from before the PEARLs were around.)

Lori (moderatrixlori) @ Michele M. - I loved Rush of Wings and it's follow up In The Blood. Hope you enjoy it.

@ Kristen - I was just going to recommend Outlander when I read your post. It is long but it's really good. It might take you a couple of chapters to get into it but don't give up!

Well, while waiting for UPS (fingers and toes crossed that they come on Monday) I read another book on my TBR pile. Sigh, just hoping its not something that I "should" have saved for April. :o) Its The Demon King and I by Candace Havens. It looks like it might be the first in a new series by her. It is the story of the oldest sister of 4 sisters who are "Guardian Keys" who's job it is to keep the Earth safe from beings from other worlds. Each sister guards against a specific world, and has strengths accordingly. There is also a brother who, while not a Guardian himself is a genius who helps them out with all the techno junk needed in this day and age. :o) Don't know if he will get his own book or not, but I figure that each of the sisters will. I give this one a rating somewhere between 3.75 and 4.5, depending. . . I liked the writing style, and while there were some dragging spots (and I figured out who the "big bad" was about page 25) it was still interesting. I especially liked some of the minor characters. So, on the whole--I think I WOULD recommend this one for others.

PS Oz--only SIX books here for you as of right this minute. You need to read faster.

I finished my book I started this afternoon. It was good. I think I'm going to read the second Dresden book. It's technically not a PEARL, but others in the series were so I'm claiming it as a PEARL. HEHE

Huh. I think you and I saw two very different things in this book. To me, the major conflict was between our heroine, who is in love with a man of the period that she thinks is mentally flexibile enough to become an Immortal, and her mentor, who says that EVERY new operative feels that way about someone and gets their heart crushed. Which one is right? Well, I don't want to give it away. :-)

I think if you're looking for swordfights, it's a terrible book to read. I think it does a great job of giving an accurate feel of the period, and of showing how much society has changed.

And I think your opinion and mine show how two people can have very different opinions of the same book!

message 172: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Nicole, I didn't really see any of that. She herself knew that he wasn't a candidate for becoming immortal, she said so. Several times. And I don't feel like she really came to terms with it so nothing was really overcome. I wasn't looking for sword fights, but I was looking for some sort of something to overcome. It was a fantastic window into the humdrum day to day of the time, but I guess I look for some sort of something to occur... character growth at the very least. I dont' feel like she ever really overcame much of anything.

You are right, two people can have definite different takes on the same thing.

Maybe the cold feel I got was because they were turned into cyborgs? So she was really going through the motions of something "mortal" while she was this aloof and perfect "immortal"? I can tell you I got real sick of the condescending nature of the immortals. Oy!!

Lisa Hendrix (lisahendrix) | 57 comments Okay, I did my own sort of March reading challenge -- judging for RWA's Rita award. But of course I can't say what books I read, or whether I liked them or not, or anything at all. I can say they weren't paranormal or historical, since that's what I have entered in the competition myself and you can't judge the category you're in, but beyond that, mum's the word.

There were eight of them, though, and all but one were authors new to me, so I feel like I earned my...what is it we earn for completing these things? Anyway, I earned it.

The Harlequin was very good but low on the hunting. It was more about Anita's relationships and how through her everyone is connected to everyone else even if they don't like each other.
I liked the line "...but love isn't absence of pain, it's a hand to hold while you're going through it."
The book is number 15 in the series and I find my self going to have to read the others to get a fuller picture of Anita and her world.

Eternally was a quick and easy read, that turned the whole Destined Mates idea on to a new path. I liked how the hero was immortal but was not a vampire or demon.

I love quotes from LKH's Anita Blake series.

Here is one that I like:

"Sometimes it's not the optimist you need, but another pessimist to walk beside you and know, absolutely know, that the sound in the dark is a monster, and it really is as bad as you think.

Did that sound hopeless? It didn't feel hopeless. It felt reassuring. It felt - real."

Kim | 57 comments Hello, all -

I'm not participating in the challenge, but I've followed the posts avidly to find new books. *grin*
For those of you who are having difficulty with the time travel, may I suggest The Fionavar Tapestry series by Guy Gavriel Kay?

The books are easy, quick reads, but without question well-written. There is a romance factor but not in depth and not the focus of the series. The characters are university students who find themselves in an alternate universe -very well developed characters, but not quite your typical sword and sorcery story, either.

Book 1 is "The Summer Tree", which won the Aurora Prize for English fantasy in 1987, and I believe all three books have at least been nominated for various awards.

The order is:
Book 1 - The Summer Tree;
Book 2 - The Wandering Fire;
Book 3 - The Darkest Road.

Best regards,
Kim

Diane, if Harlequin is the first Anita book you've read, then you really, really need to go back and read the series in order. I'm a huge Laurel K Hamilton fan and a stickler for reading her series, well any series actually, in order. The evolution of Anita cannot be fully appreciated unless you experience her metamorphosis in the way Laurel intended. She undergoes so many changes and grows so much as a character in each book that I can't imagine trying to jump into the middle of the series. Big kudos to you though for wanting to go back and start at the beginning.

Well, I read book 1 in the series that my Futuristic romance was in. I listed it and crossed it off. Not sure if I'm going to save the other 2 in the series for next month--or if I won't be able to wait. :oP

It was called "Your Planet or Mine" and was amusing and a fairly quick read. There was a subplot going on, as well as the main plot (saving Earth). I gave it a 4 out of 5 for a ranking.

So, depending on what I decide--I've either read 8 of my 9 books--or I'm still at 7 of the 9.

The review I posted on A Rush of Wings:
"Wow. Just...wow. You know when everyone around you tells you a book is phenomenal, different and unique, and you just have to read it because they swear that you will love it?

And you imagine that it could never live up to the hype?

A Rush of Wings lives up to the hype. It soars above and beyond the hype, grips you in its gritty, blood-stained talons and drags you through one searing image after another, forcing you to traverse the landscape of disturbed minds, fathomless pain, and offering a fleeting glimpse of the shimmering distant oasis of hope.

Dante's fragmented thoughts, his rage, and his compassion pound a beat through your veins, while Heather's determination and sense of justice heighten the tempo. Every facet of this book is dazzling, leaving you aching for more of the blistering emotions, more of the adrenaline-fueled action, more of everything and anything Phoenix is willing to give.

In this case, the hype, however great, cannot come close. Read it."

Yeah. I liked it THAT much.

Nicole (rednikki) | 31 comments Man, I am just not having any luck this month.

1. ANTHOLOGY - Shifter by Angela Knight, Lora Leigh, Alyssa Day and Virginia Kantra (anyone read this one?)

2. FANTASY/MAGICAL Romance - Dinah McCall's Dreamcatcher. Not recommended.

3. FUTURISTIC Romance - TBD (I've now been to four bookstores and found nothing! I may have to turn to Amazon.)

8. Romantic SCIENCE FICTION & FUTURISTIC FANTASY - Spider and Jeanne Robinson's The Star Dancers I can't recommend this. I was really surprised at the racism (really? You wrote this in 1991 and you're calling people "Negro" and "Abo"?) It was a shame, as some of the ideas were interesting.

9. Romantic URBAN FANTASY: Matthew Thomas, Before and After

Diane | 28 comments UPDATE : Another book read.

1.ON THE PROWL ***** 03/11/2009

A good taster of worlds already established by the authors.
I like each story but I must say I loved Mona Lisa Betwining (last story in book). You have to of read the other Mona Lisa books/short story to 'get' the story in this book.

The first story is a prequel to a new series on werewolves set in Mercy Thompson's world.

The second is about some new characters in the World of the Lupi series.

The third is about a woman who with help from a Lord of the Fey discovers her true indentity.

The fourth is a novella set in the world of the Monere which also introduces the demon Princess Lucinda (now has her own series called The Demon Princess Chronicles).

Over all I have enjoyed each of these stories and will hopeful be following the series that each comes from. More books to read - YEAH !

Lori (moderatrixlori) Great review Michelle M.! You have quite a flair for writing reviews! You'll love the follow up "In the Blood" just as much. Dante is ranking right up there with Zadist and Archeron in the tortured hero department. Fabulous books!

Jacalyn | 454 comments Ann - Am I going to enjoy the your planet or mine? I look forward to it. Thanks for the new stack of books! Also thanks for the shopping. Teh Cute! It is overpowering!

Michelle M - We hit some good sales so my mum spent less than me. Most of my stuff wasn't on sale. GRRR. But I have been making a "baby needs cake". It started off as a diaper cake but blossomed. It's made of it 24 prefold cloth diapers (She's going cloth), 10 onesies, 12 bathcloths, 4 burp rags, 1 bottle, and a few flat cloth diapers. I still have to add the decorative doodads. I'll post a picture in my blog when it is done and post shower. But man, the baby stuff is generally freaking cute and mega bucks. I blew so much money and I have two showers to attend aside from this one I am throwing. Two on Saturday (one is "mine") and one next Friday. My pocketbook says "Ouch". You are doing great in your reading! Good to hear that this book you just read was that awesome!! I sometimes worry when I read a book that has a lot of hype just for that reason... what if it doesn't live up? It's great when it does!!

Nicole - Best of luck!! You can get there. If it helps, try looking at the Acorna books by Ann McCaffrey or the Skolian Empire by Catherine Asaro for your futuristic/sci fi romance.

Diane - I have the On the Prowl on my little stack. I'm a little more excited to read it now because of your review!! Though I haven't read any of the Mona Lisa Betwinning stuff so that story has me a little disappointed. I hope I won't be too lost!

Everyone else: I'm a third of the way through Fool Moon, book two in the Harry Dresden series. I'm happy to say I'm enjoying it. I will continue my "Read it but skip the first book" recommendation. At least now I have knowledge that book 2 really is good. LOL This is my sixth book this month. And I also only have four stories left in the anthology Wolfsbane and Mistletoe. So I'm hoping to get some headway but I have errands today. Story of my life this whole week. Darn plague put me way behind on all my stuff! Except reading!

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Thanks, Lori! And man, oh man, WHAT a tortured hero. I'm drowning in books at the moment, but I don't think I'm going to be able to hold off reading the next. Although, perhaps I should, since someone said it'll be another year before #3 comes out?

Perhaps I'll promise myself to wait at least until the 28 books from the library have been returned! (Yeah, we'll see how long that promise lasts.)

Lady: I remember when my friend was making diaper cakes out the wazoo. She's also partial to making molded chocolate pops. God bless the patience of you crafty people, is all I'll say.

Nicole: "In Death" series? I really liked the first and it fit the bill, so I keep touting it for this challenge!

Diane | 28 comments Lady Ozma don't be too disappointed, I like Mona Lisa Betwining as a stand alone but find that it is better to follow this series in order cause it makes Mona Lisa's character changes easier to 'get'. Also I have to say the sex in the story can be very ... up front and not for the faint of heart, the whole series is like that now that I think of it. Hope I have not put you off reading it now ?

That's what I said!!
I'm so glad you loved it. Excellent review, Michelle!

Book 2 is just as good as the first, but yeah, book 3 doesn't come out until, like, next January... I'm probably going to be re-reading 1&2 a couple times between now and then. :)

I just bought the latest Mona Lisa Awakening book. I could not resist after reading "On the Prowl" Once I read it I will let you all know how it goes. Although I am not sure when I will get to it because I into the Black Dagger Brotherhood right now, and I am still trying to read our books for this month. My husband say my order slip and freaked. :) OHWELL. all is fair in love and books

No, Mercy Thompson is one series and Alpha & Omega is another. While they're both in the same world and have cross-over characters, they're not the same. The On the Prowl is the prequel to Cry Wolf. While some of the events that take place are covered in the Mercy series as well, reading the Mercy books isn't required for the Alpha & Omega series (although I'm a die-hard Mercy fan and think it's the superior series - possibly a bit unfair considering how there's only one Alpha & Omega book so far...)

Okay, I am with you. I did read that a second book of alpha omega is coming out I believe this year sometime. Once I finish with the black dagger brotherhood book three I am going to start cry wolf while I wait for the other BDB books to arrive on my door step. I will have to look into the mercy books.
can you tell me what is good about them?
