ok now, ask her why she has access to all those previous PEARL winners. Sigh, yes, I admit it, she borrowed them from me after I finished them. I had to go all the way back to 2002 for some of MY titles. But I too tried to stick to PEARL winners/nominees. I think I have 1 or 2 that weren't on the list, but I did my best.

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Lol. Raid, plunder and pillage! Take back what is yours!

Of course, if you don't have them any more, you're forced to find a whole slew of new, wonderful books.

Which she can then steal from you...devious! It's a never-ending cycle, I imagine.

Jacalyn | 454 comments I'm changing my locks so mum can't steal these books back!!! I need them to read!!! LOL

I kind of like the idea of mum finding new books and passing them to me. HEHEHE Though that isn't going to help me being able to reclaim this bookcase, is it? *SIGH* I really need to figure something out with this book situation. ROFL

It definitely is a never ending cycle!!!

And I can't believe anyone would call me devious. Hello?! This is a HALO on my head!!! ;)

message 55: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments You know, maybe it's your mum that's devious? After all, she must clear off a lot of shelf space passing those books on to you...
Storage fees could be in your future, Ann!

Linnea (linneasinclair) | 96 comments Wow, thanks for supporting the PEARL awards!

Now, okay, for those of you going ??? at FUTURISTIC or SCIENCE FICTION ROMANCE books, I'll offer this: if you don't mind reading a PDF on your computer or hand-held reader, I'll donate FREE a PDF of
AN ACCIDENTAL GODDESS (thanks for the plug, Gail)
or
GABRIEL'S GHOST (book #1 in the Dock Five Universe)

if someone wants to read either one. GABRIEL'S won the RITA award (that's actually like winning an Oscar) for Best Paranormal Romance in 2006.

Just email me off loop with which one you want to read
An Accidental Goddess
Gabriel's Ghost

and I'll email you the PDF.

That is so great, Linnea. I, for one, would like to read Gabriel's Ghost. I have the three books (its part of a series, right?) in my TBR list, and to get the first one sooner than later, would be so cool.

I haven't read any of your books yet, although I've heard plenty of good things. I thought this challenge would be a good way for us readers to explore more other sub-genres.

I'm sure the other challenge participants would be happy to know about this offer.

message 61: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Wow, the RITA is a great award! Grats on that!!! I was totally interested in Goddess just cause I liked the name but now I'm curious about Gabriel!!

Thanks for your generosity and once more... grats on Gabriel!! It's gotten several nods I see. (I clicked on the link!)

message 62: by Linnea (new)

Linnea (linneasinclair) | 96 comments No problem. ;-) My pleasure to "educate" those willing to risk adventure and romance in the space lanes.

BTW, as far as the RITA awards, Finders Keepers was a RITA finalist, as was Games of Command.

Lady Ozma, if you want a PDF of GABRIEL'S email me off loop. ;-) ~Linnea

Sigh, I will be a little late starting this challenge. UPS, hurry up already. :o) Most of the books that I'm reading for it, I had to order either through PBS (Paper Back Swap) or Amazon.com. None have been delievered as of yet (6:50 pm EST) so I won't get to start them up until they come in. I did check on Amazon--and my poor UPS guy is gonna need a forklift. I had a LOT of books that I'd been waiting on because I didn't have money for them til yesterday (Friday). I have FIFTEEN books coming from Amazon, 3 from PBS and I am thinking about hitting a used book store where i have a little ($150.00) credit for books I'd already taken in.

So many books, so little time.

Nicole (rednikki) | 31 comments All right. I'm crazy, but I'm giving this a try. It helps that there's an amazing used bookstore I just discovered at which I can fill the holes

1. ANTHOLOGY - I'll figure this out later.

2. FANTASY/MAGICAL Romance - Dinah McCall's Dreamcatcher. (Does this count? The two characters have a psychic connection and a feeling they've always known each other...because they were together in a previous life.)

3. FUTURISTIC Romance - I'll figure this out later.

4. SHAPESHIFTER Romance - And this one, too.

5. TIME TRAVEL Romance - Legend by Jude Deveraux

6. VAMPIRE Romance- Lover Revealed by J.R. Ward

7. Romantic FANTASY: Susan Wright, To Serve and Submit

8. Romantic SCIENCE FICTION & FUTURISTIC FANTASY - Spider and Jeanne Robinson's The Star Dancers (I figure if Jeanne's involved it HAS to have some romance, right?)

9. Romantic URBAN FANTASY: Matthew Thomas, Before and After

Mysteria Lane: I liked Davidson's and Grant's contributions best and may have to look up more of Grant's writing. The other two were less plot, more "let's get these folks into bed!" with Showalter bordering on pure porn. Or maybe Showalter just doesn't appeal to me. ::shrug::

message 76: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 320 comments I thought Mysteria was interesting because all of the stories took place in the small town kind of a cool link to me and I liked how some characters where in multiple stories. Did Grant write the one about the school teacher and the ex student? If so that was my favorite too.

message 77: by Gail (new)

Gail | 110 comments I like Susan Grant's writing too. She writes futuristic/SF romance! There's another one for those who are still looking.

Jacalyn | 454 comments Ok, so for those of you who were following Feb's challenge you know March came and brought with it the freaking flu. I suppose you gotta get it once a decade or something, right? Gosh I feel like I'm dying.

Worse yet, I have a horrid headache with this. Since I can't keep anything down, it's making it impossible to take headache meds.

So reading - not going easy. I did decide to start with PEARL listed anthology - Blood Lite. Seemed really short stories were perfect. I tend to fall asleep at the drop of a hat, and my attention span is negative a million. I'm actually a third of the way through it, so huzzah!

And I'm still miserable. If I still feel bad when I get done with it, I may read another PEARL anthology just cause I happen to have it on my shelf, too. :)

For those who want to know, I'm actually enjoying Blood Lite though dangit... some of these stories are so funny I'm laughing out loud which my stomach and head are protesting to. Bad bad bad.

And I'm seven stories down and have yet to see a lick of romance. How on earth did it get put up for something regarding romance? Maybe that's to come... there's still 14 more stories to go!

message 80: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Replies... from my death bed...

Linnea - too much effort but thanks. If I were feeling better I'd probably jump at your offer.

Ann (AKA mum AKA my freaking drug dealer...I mean book dealer) - How many of those 15 books are making their way to my TBR when you are done? You see guys? This is why my TBR never seems to diminish. I've read 34 books this year and something tells me I'll see 15 added by the end of March! HEHEHEHE

Nichole - I love that this post had so many comments before March, too! ROFL Can you say... ADDICTS?

Nicole - I <3 Spider. I've read the Star Dance trilogy and you will greatly enjoy! Fantastic tales. Did you get the omnibus or something? If so that's really THREE books! HEHEHE

Now... back to my unscheduled dying... never fear... I plan to come back as the undead... I mean I do have all these books to read. In a contest between the flu and books, books always wins! HAHAHA

sigh, March not only came in with the flu for poor Oz--it also came in with a freaking snow storm. No UPS, no mail, no nothing. Including a snow plow as of 3:49 pm.

We had dinner with Oz on Sat. so I figure its just a matter of time before I get her flu. And we are praying her Dad doesn't get it. 1) he's diabetic and anything that makes you throw up and prevents you eating, can put him in the hospital and 2) he's a nuclear chemist and his power plant is starting an outage on Friday and he can't get sick. The only excuse they use for missing work during this is death--your OWN. And even then, I'm not sure they don't have a few voodoo priests on the payroll to provide them with zombies. :o)

Sigh, I want my BOOKS. I want mail. Oh, and did I mention--the TV is out. Not the internet, which is weird since we have cable internet. We think one of the satellites or something is down, as well as maybe the main office here where the transformers and all the other junk they need to broadcast to local subscribers is located.

So, come on folks, entertain me and make me jealous with how many books YOU are getting read for this challenge.

Ok, ok, I'm not totally without books--just don't have my CHALLENGE books. I'm reading "Where the Broken Heart Still Beats" right now. Its the story of a white settler who was stolen as a child by Indians, then returned to her white family 20 or so years later. Then I have Oz's "How it Really Happened" to read. But I like to get my challenge books read as soon as possible--just in case I don't LIKE one, so I have time to find a replacement.

Did I mention--its BRIGHT outside? All that snow is blinding.

message 82: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments What about thsoe books I gave you for last month's challenge you still haven't read???? ROFL

And I'm telling you, this sounds just like what Dad had. I don't think he'll get it. He already had it. The chills... my gosh... how can you be so cold and yet sweat so much???

But on the bright note... over the course of today I've eaten like 6 crackers!!!! Two to three at a time seems to be my limit... But so far so good! It's SOMETHING! But my ginger ale is nearly gone :( But I do have a sprite. Sure no ginger... but... does almost as good.

Mum, WTH is up with the freaking mail? Hello? No rain no snow blahblahblah... if they don't come you should call and complain. I'm wondering if mine came. I'm expecting a couple of books I won off the net (actually here at goodreads) and I'm dying to get them in!

OK, I'm going back to Blood Lite.

And Lady Ozma - thanks for telling me Star Dancers is awesome! It is in fact an omnibus edition that has the first two books in the series. I'm considering reading it next; the first two books I've read in this challenge did not impress me.

1. ANTHOLOGY - TBD

2. FANTASY/MAGICAL Romance - Dinah McCall's Dreamcatcher. Holy cultural appropriation, Batman!

3. FUTURISTIC Romance - TBD

4. SHAPESHIFTER Romance - TBD

5. TIME TRAVEL Romance - Legend by Jude Deveraux This thing had plot holes the size of the Grand Canyon.

I actually read Mysteria Lane, which is the follow-up to Mysteria.

In Mysteria Lane, Grant wrote a story about a demon who wishes she were human and the demon-hunter she encounters while she's on assignment in Mysteria. There was a good balance of suspense, humor, and romance.

P.C. Cast wrote a story about a school teacher who is taking over her cousin's teaching gig. I liked that one too, but felt that the ending was rushed.

You know, I feel as though there are a lot of titles on that list that aren't strictly Romance. For example, Mercy Thompson made the list and she's more urban fantasy.

Weird. But hey, it makes for a change-up!

Martina's March Challenge Reading List:

1. Anthology

7. Romantic Fantasy

8. Romantic Science Fiction/Futuristic Fantasy
Hope's Folly by Linnea Sinclair (still need to buy)
9. Romantic Urban Fantasy
At Grave's End by Jeaniene Frost

I always read more than nine books per month so I've got a lot of AND/OR in my lists. :-)

message 89: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments Nicole - I TOTALLY vote for you to read Stardancers next. Why? 1. GREAT stories. Spider is GIFTED. 2. I met Spider. He's awesome. 3. Two books for the price of one. HEHE Can't beat that! 4. Wanna know what you think!

Michelle M - OK, I finally found a romance in this Blood Lite. It's the one with the couple looking for thrills so they are trying to find a stalker to chase them. Obviously they don't understand psycho stories. It's only teens who have sex that die. They are now adults. ROFL! But hey... it wasn't really romance but it was a couple looking to spice up their love life. So I'm taking what I can. Maybe I can take Charlaine's too... with the couple on the eco kick? Oh yeah... and I figure at least as the undead you guys will all appreciate me and not try to kill me with flying records or stakes. ;)

Hey guess what guys?

1. Ann got blessed by the UPS Gods! Good luck seeing her anytime soon! ROFL!

2. I was finally better enough to take some manna from heaven in the form of Excedrin Migraine. I'm still feverish but I feel fantastic! (That's a real weird feeling.) At least I don't feel like the walking dead anymore... ROFL I was really starting to feel like I might need the ministrations of my favourite anthropologist necromancer, Juan. (Which is confusing to all of you because it's from the novel I'm editing... Juan of the Dead...LOL)

Must have something to do with the follow up that no one ever talks about to "Neither Rain, nor snow, nor gloom of night can stay these messengers about their duty" The follow up goes "Don't ask us about: Rocks, trolls with sticks, all sorts of dragons, Mrs Cake, Huje green things with teeth, any kinds of black dogs with orange eyebrows rains of spaniels. Fog. Mrs. Cake"

ok, for those NOT in the know--that's what's written on the Ankh-Morpork Central Post Office building. The book is Going Postal by Terry Pratchet.

So I'm guessing that either Mrs. Cake showed up--or trolls beat down the building. (Or Jack Frost showed up and dumped a TON of snow)

hey, you can't have everything!! At least UPS came! :) I never did find out if my mail came with my books. Le Sigh. Want my books. One is supposed to be autographed!

BTW guys, I'm 2/3rds through Blood Lite and let me tell you... this is a great set of anthologies. Still questioning the romance angle, but man there's some fantastic stories. I HIGHLY recommend it. If you're looking for an anthology still... get this one!

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1593 comments Three down...

1. ANTHOLOGY
Mysteria Lane
2. FANTASY/MAGICAL
Up in Smoke - Katie MacAllister
3. FUTURISTIC
Naked in Death - JD Robb
4. SHAPESHIFTER
The Accidental Werewolf - Dakota Cassidy
5. TIME TRAVEL
The House on the Strand - Daphne Du Maurier
6. VAMPIRE
The Accidental Vampire - Lynsay Sands
7. ROMANTIC FANTASY Shadow Bridge - Gregory Frost
8. ROMANTIC SCI-FI/FUTURISTIC FANTASY
Urban Shaman - CE Murphy
9. ROMANTIC URBAN FANTASY
A Rush of Wings - Adrian Phoenix

The Accidental Werewolf was cute. It's a light paranormal romance with a dose of mystery thrown in for good measure. Took me a while to get into this one though-the cult quotes of the Bobbie-Sue cosmetics empire were a lil insipid.

I have to ask: Did anyone else feel as though Cassidy was channeling MJD?

Marty's outbursts were somewhat Betsy-ish, foul-mouthed Nina could be a stand-in for Jessica, and Keegan sighed in impatience enough to rival my beloved sexy Sinclair (minus the sinister machinations). Was I the only one that had this thought?

message 95: by Jacalyn (new)

Jacalyn | 454 comments The Accidental Werewolf amused me with the bobbie sue thing because I know way too many MK dealers.

Hey guys... I finished Blood Lite at like 5 AM. Apparently the penalty for being sick and sleeping for like I dunno off and on for 36 hours is when you take meds you then can't sleep normal hours. HA!

Since I'm still questionable I decide bag it I'm reading another PEARL kudoed anthology. My attention span just doesn't seem good for a full length book. So I'm working on Wolfsbane and Mistetoe. I'm on the 5th of 15 stories. I'm liking it. A bit of Christmas in March! HEHE

I gotta say... that Blood Lite? It was awesome! Man they were taking "romance" quite liberal there so I've decided I'm not gonna sweat this "romance" business. HA! My goal is to read as many PEARL hits as I have on my TBR bookcase and hope that somehow those will 1. lead to nine books and 2. will somehow fit into the nine categories YZ gave to us. All other reading I am going to hope will somehow fill in any possible gaps and be bonus. I'm gonna try to find something that has a shred of romance... but if I can't and I have something remotely close... I'm going for it.

Of course I'm also being a little liberal and claiming Dresden book 2 as one of my "PEARLS" because I'm guessing it just didn't get a nod for that one but later Dresden stories have and I'm sorry but I'm not skipping that far ahead into the series. I hope that's understandable. I figure if several other Dresden's go... this is an OK deal. (Someone tell me if they see something wrong with this.) I'm really happy because it's getting me motivated to finally read this dang Dresden 2 which has been on my shelf since stinking 2001. I mean really. It's been long enough. Back then I never kept more than 10 books on my TBR at a time! This is SAD. (And at the time I also had book 3 already, too!)

Finished off Item #7 on 3/3/09:

7. Romantic Fantasy "Never Been Witched"

light, amusing quick read. I think it took about 2 hours to finish altogether. However, I will warn you all--this is really NOT a total stand alone. It refers to things in all the previous (all 5 of them) books.
