Laura | 18 comments These are two I haven't seen mentioned yet that just go to show how universal JA is:

Pride and Prejudice. Great quote!

And from Mansfield Park
"Nothing ever fatigues me but doing what I do not like."
Some truth in that I think!

Marren | 764 comments Sarah Louise wrote: ""I think it ought not to be set down as certain that a man must be acceptable to every woman he may happen to like himself"
'Mansfield Park' by Jane Austen

Quote of the day..."

I wrote down this quote a few days ago, whilst I was rereading the book. I like it, it just reminded me of a current situation.

message 73: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) Today's quote of the day (getting these from my app):
"She hoped to be wise and reasonable in time; but alas! alas! she must confess to herself that she was not wise yet."
'Persuasion' by Jane Austen

message 76: by Irene (new)

Irene | 271 comments One of my favourite quote from Harry Potter:

"We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are."

message 77: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments "Implacable resentment is a shade in a character" Pride and Prejudice

You gotta let go. Don't hold things and people in your heart, you are damaging yourself.

message 78: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Very true!!!

message 79: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments "...there is something pleasing about his mouth when he speaks." Pride and Prejudice

Mrs. Gardiner used this quote to describe Mr. Darcy but as soon as I read it, I remember Mr. Tilney :)

Descriptions like that really make him clear in my head, I can really see him talking!

message 82: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) Marren wrote: ""...there is something pleasing about his mouth when he speaks." Pride and Prejudice

Oh yes that's a good one :)

message 83: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments " A woman of seven and twenty," said Marianne, after pausing a moment, "can never hope to feel or inspire affection again..."

Ladies and Gents, I am calling Marianne out on behalf of Anne Eliot and all other seven and twenty out there. To think I defended her and sympathy with her when Willoughby did the despicable to her. By the way this did not bother me when I read it a long time ago but it does now. "Time changes and people change with it" I did. Someone pass on this message to Marianne.

message 84: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
HAHAHAHAHAHA! It Is true though!!

message 85: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments Dear Soph, you agreed with Marianne?

message 86: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
No no!! I agree with you! Your 'Ladies and Gents' but ;D

message 87: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
#bit

message 88: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) I don't agree with Marianne (esp as I'm about to turn 32!). However, in the time it was written, there was some truth in it. It is mentioned in Persuasion that Anne is less likely to marry as she's now getting older. People married younger then, too - it was acceptable to marry at 15 or 16, but we would think that shocking (and not wise!) these days.

message 89: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments Ok, Soph, my heart flattered a bit, I know that is one thing we would not disagree on :D.

On yes Sarah , I remember that bit from Persuasion. If you pass 20 and you are not married, it is like all hope is lot. I think this jolted me because I am weeks away from 28 and I have not connected with my better half. I felt Marianne told me to get lost. haha, hehe.

message 90: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Yes Marren! Of course I don't agree with Marianne ;)

But, you are right Sarah!! They were even getting a little worried at Jane (P&) who was 22!! And then Charlotte Lucas was 27 and had to settle for Collins!!

message 91: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments Oh how the times have changed, the woman need not worry if she is not married at 20. Women are marrying much later now, since the shift in the economy and social norms.

message 92: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Very true! At 16 (well 17 on Monday!:D) I can't imagine being married or even being married soon!!

message 93: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments I felt the same way at that age, even, I don't feel I am ready for marriage.

The quote of the day from my app - my birthday quote as well ;) - is ....

'It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.'

This WOULD be the quote on my birthday - it's no coincidence!!

message 95: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) Great quote Soph!
My app isn't working :(

message 96: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments ha Soph, from your favourite book as well. Pride and Prejudice first chapter instantly pulls you in. That quote may be be varied now. It does not look like George Clooney is in a rush to get a wife :D

message 97: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Mine wasn't either - there is an update which fixed it in the App Store :)

It is my favourite book and one of my favourite quotes !! ;D

Hahahaha ;)

message 98: by Jean (new)

Jean (otakumom) I love all the quotes.

Here's my contribution from Mansfield Park

"No man dies of love but on the stage, Mr. Crawford."
