Marren | 764 comments When you write the quote, state the book and say why you like the quote.

Marren | 764 comments "Human nature is so well disposed towards those who are in interesting situations, that a young person, who either marries or dies, is sure of being kindly spoken of." Emma

This is so true from my experiences. When a young persons dies, no matter how criminally minded he/she may have been, the eulogies are usually full of praise for that person. Similarly, when a young couple is set to marry, alot of interest is shown.

Great thread idea! So true about that one! So many of Austen's quotes are still so true today... Now which shall I post first...

This one from persuasion when they are discussing how love differs between the sexes.

"Men have had every advantage of us in telling their own story. Education has been theirs in so much higher a degree; the pen has been in their hands. I will not allow books to prove anything."

This may not be as true now (contradicting what I had said before ;) ) but it was so true! Talking about the inconstant feelings of woman described in books, and yet the books are written by men mainly then. Anne hits is right on the head in this conversation (important conversation as well !! :D)

And this from Pride and Prejudice

"Could there be finer symptoms? Is not general incivility the very essence of love?"

In my experience, when someone is in love with someone and they are both with you in company, they generally talk to no one but themselves. This quote is so true and true today.

Ha, this is a quote that is ideal to defend the stance that men controlled the pen in the 18th century. That is why history is often broken down as HIS STORY.

HIS HISTORY - yes, exactly!

message 9: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments "All have been, or at least all have believed themselves to be, in danger from the pursuit of someone whom they wished to avoid; and all have been anxious for the attention of someone whom they wished to please." Northanger Abbey

I like this quote because I have lived it.

That's great! Haha

Also from NA
"The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid."
Because I agree with it;)

message 11: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments I agree to Soph. Everyone should take pleasure in a good novel (they are all that and a bag of chips: I wonder who invented that phrase)

message 12: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Haha!! :D

message 13: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) What a good thread :)
Here's one of my favourites:
"I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book!"
- Caroline Bingley, P&P (probably her best line).

message 14: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
I completely agree with that quote!

message 15: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments Probably her best line for true Sarah, lol. I like it.

message 16: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) Here's another about books:
"The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid." - Henry Tilney :)

message 17: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments Ha, Mr. Tilney, I love a man who loves his books :P Therefore, I favour that quote, although it may be subjective, haha

message 18: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
I love that one!! I love Tilney!! His humour and love of books! ;D

Off Market578 (chasta_schneider) | 4 comments One of my favorites - I even have it on my profile page in the quotes section is from P & P, "You have delighted us long enough." There are so many reasons that I love that quote - first of all, it just plain cracks me up! Also, I tend to be very sarcastic myself and I can see myself saying something like that to someone and having them look at me blankly - which would also crack me up knowing that they just didn't get it. I work in Human Resources at the day job and so many people complain and whine to you all day...you really long to say something like this sometimes. :) It may sound harsh but trust me... I'm thinking of writing a book on all of the ridiculous things that people say and do in my office!

message 20: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Haha!! Great quote and great explanation!! ;)

message 21: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments Oh, I like that quote Chasta, simply for the sarcasm part. I am a sarcastic girlie, sometimes folks think I am mean when they do not understand. *oh well* :D.

"I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun."
Pride and prejudice

This just sums up Darcy's change in feelings and how it happened so well - he gets it completely right! and it is such a sweet line!

Marren | 764 comments awwww, think I will use that quote soon, erhem :P

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) Another of my favourites - I have a mug with this quote:

"Follies and nonsense, whims and inconsistencies do divert me, I own, and I laugh at them whenever I can."
Elizabeth in P&P.

I like it as a stand-alone quote, because it's a good philosophy about life... I also like it in the novel as it demonstrates Lizzie's character to Darcy, and shows that she's not afraid of him, or Caroline, or their so-called superiority; she is speaking her mind, not afraid to be honest or open.

message 27: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

It is such a great quote! Really sums up that side of her character.

message 28: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
This one from Emma is very true!
"Vanity working on a weak head, produces every sort of mischief."

As is this one from persuasion...
"One man's ways may be as good as another's, but we all like our own best."

message 29: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) They're very good ones too :)

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) There is an app from the JA centre that includes a quote of the day, worth downloading :)

message 31: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
Thats where some of these come from. And there is another app to do with JA :) worth downloading as well!

This one from persuasion because I completely agree with it.
"My idea of good company, Mr Elliot, is the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company."

That is also my idea of good company!

message 33: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) Mine too - love that quote :)

message 34: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) This one was my 'quote of the day' on the JA centre app today, made me smile:
"My being charming, Harriet, is not quite enough to induce me to marry; I must find other people charming -- one other person at least."
'Emma' by Jane Austen

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) Here's today's quote of the day:

"Selfishness must always be forgiven, you know, because there is no hope of a cure." 'Mansfield Park' - Jane Austen

Soph: :-)

message 38: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments I like that quote, it is interesting.

Your on it Sarah with the quotes ;)

That does hold some truth I think!

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) I get a little alert on my phone with a new one each day :)

Someone sent me this on Twitter today: woooohoooo! A fellow Janeite!!!

Then an image that says
"If a book is well written, I always find it too short." - Jane Austen.

Another good one!

message 41: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
so do i!! :D :D :D

that is another good one!

message 42: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
There are people, who the more you do for them, the less they will do for themselves.

Emma, a lot of truth there!!

message 43: by Marren (new)

Marren | 764 comments That is such a suitable quote today in regards to charity. Sometimes people do not want to give because they worry about whether will take the rope and get off their feet or continue receiving charity when they are now able.

message 44: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
So true!!

message 45: by May (new)

May Abbey (maynicoleabbey) | 13 comments "I shall offer to pay him tomorrow: he will rant and storm about his love for you, and there will be an end of the matter."

Mr. Benett in P&P. Just about anything Mr. B says is hilarious. Try to picture Mr. D 'rant and storm' about anything. Yet it's the perfect discription for those in the throes of love.

message 46: by Sophie, Your Lovely Moderator (new)

Sophie | 2624 comments Mod
That's a great one! Haha love Mr Bennet! And what he says there is probably true! He would never accept payment!

message 47: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Louise Smith (sarahlouisesmith) Love the Mr B quote!

My quote of the day app has this lovely one:

"A man does not recover from such a devotion of the heart to such a woman! He ought not; he does not."
'Persuasion' by Jane Austen
