I read a book when I was younger that took place in either a children's home or a boarding school… I think it may have been all girls. The girls each get one wish from some magic item and the youngest wishes to win a pumpkin carving contest. In the end, no one remembers the wishes. I read this book in the 90s but I think it was older, probably 80s. Thanks!

I don't really remember... I think a beginner's chapter book. There was quite a bit of text but also some pictures in black and white (with brown or orange accents)
I'll move this back (from Abandoned) to Unsolved.Katie, you'll have better luck catching the eye of someone who remembers this book if you 'bump' this thread every couple of months.
Sounds like Miss Know It All and the Wishing Lamp
by Carol Beach York One blustery October day, while cleaning out a closet at the Good Day Home for Girls, Tatty, Phoebe, Mary and Little Ann find an old brass lamp--a wishing lamp
Another description:
Three girls who live in The Good Day Orphanage for Girls find an old brass lamp. Miss Lavender says that she ordered the wishing lamp from a magazine when she was a girl, and that it came with 101 wishes. The girls wish for all sorts of things from winning the Halloween costume contest to be coming invisible. Tatty, who wishes to become tall, doesn't stop growing, and it takes Miss Know It All to settle the problem.
On the Google Books page, a few of the common terms include: "Orphanage for girls," "pumpkin pies," and "prize."
