Hi! I'm James, currently teaching HS English in Xavier School and photography during weekends. Thanks for inviting me to join in the group. :)Do you guys hold book club meetings? I'd love to join if ever you hold book discussions.
Hi James. Welcome to our group! I've been seeing you on line in GR. Nice to see you here.We hold book club meet ups. Our book discussions are very informal. Next year, we might start doing this the old-fashioned way. This year, we are still getting the pulse of the members.
Thanks! Bakit next year pa? Haha. :) Hope to meet you guys soon. The last book club I participated in was years ago... Hopefully someone can arrange it. Just bought an ebook copy of A Visit from the Goon Squad. I was hoping that we can do a book club meeting on this book as well together with other GoodReads.com community :)
Hi James, welcome to GR-Filipinos! We can't wait to meet you face-to-face, but our meet-ups are different compared to other book clubs. We talk and chat in random at the same time recommending interesting books. Anyway, if you want, you can find some nice people over the Reading Buddy thread and discuss it. I'll try to read the book next week.
Hi James, I think it's possible to arrange a real book club here. I've been to one of the meet ups. We just need some guys to organize it because everyone is talking, notably me, haha.By the way, some us just finished Goon Squad. I hope you enjoy it. And welcome pala, haha. :)
Yep, kahit once a month lang ayos na yun. Tipong Book/s of the Month ba. I'm super willing to participate!
Guys, thanks for all the interest. The challenging part is really to identify the book that most members would be willing to read and discuss. We have so varied tastes. Based on all the meetups, most of us read YA, paranormal, chick lit, sc-fi, mystery, etc. Many read bestsellers and award-winning books. Few read classics. Still there are some who just pretend to like books just to socialize and you can judge this with the number of messages that they have here in the threads compared to the actual books that they've read.
Other challenges:
1) Many of us say 'yes' to an idea but fail to support it with actions.
2) Excuses, excuses. Look at our books for the month. Many voted for those but they just don't read them. Including me.
3) Location - can be challenging especially when it is raining.
4) Availability of the book - if we choose a current bestseller, many of the members are students who do not have that kind of money to spare for a regular-priced book. If we choose an old one, some members must have read the book already and do not want to re-read (like me).
5) Meeting place - I want to do this in a residence of a member on a rotation basis. Just like an old-fashioned book club. Discussion in a restaurant is okay but sometimes it is noisy and we have to spend for snacks or meals. Again, some members are still studying and are living on allowances from their parents.
Let me know what you think. Organizing this is easy but committed participation is where the real challenge is.
Hurdles and obstacles aside, it would be great if indeed we did meet up weekly to discuss literature, like "the others" in lost. If you've watched it, maybe you'd remember that Ben Linus had a book club and some of them even got to pick the reading material, although Ben got to pick most of the time.
You could be like, Ben, K.D.

@Jerald, Ady, James, Kim, Mikaela: Welcome to GR.
@Ken, there's always Skype. (",) Hahaha...

If it's a monthly meeting, I hope it doesn't fall on the first, third, or last weekend of the month. I already have commitments on those days.
I agree with William that we can have KD as our Ben. Or we could have a volunteer-moderator of the month. The volunteer-moderator can choose the book of the month.
If most people here are really serious about forming a book club. The first thing that needs to be established is it's purpose.

Julia was the one who moderated and picked the book. And of course, there is a thematic underpinning or reason behind why the book was the one chosen, aside froom the fact that the creators are fans of Stephen King's work.
Sorry for the rant, it seems I'm still haven't gotten over Lost.

Aloha! Just made my account a few hours ago.I'm a 4th year Engineering student currently obsessed with The Hunger Games. If you love to read and eat, we will get along just fine.
Adios. :)
JERALD and KLARENZ: Welcome to our group.KLARENZ: I loved THE HUNGER GAMES and I loved eating too. So, magkakasundo tayo?
Hi, I'm Tin. :) I've had this account for a few months now pero kanina ko lang nakita 'tong group. As for books, I like Haruki Murakami's works a lot and I'm currently obsessed with A Game of Thrones.
Hi Tin, I'll be starting Game of Thrones really soon. I already have a sample of it on my nook. I just have to finish The Devil Colony by James Rollins first.Welcome sa lahat ng mga newbies!

WAHAHA, speaking of Ben Linus from LOST... I saw Michael Emerson last night at the LA Premiere of True Blood season 4.Wala lang. Random. XD (Well, his wife Carrie Preston plays Arlene Fowler on True Blood.)

How are you liking "The Devil Colony" so far? :)
Tin, I already read the prologue and it is interesting. People are comparing the series to LOTR. Are you watching this on HBO? Ako hindi, wala kaming cable. :) Cate, haven't had time to read. So ready to have my days off. The first 70 or so pages of Devil Colony though were released with a short story, Skeleton Key, last month. Seichan had her own adventure which was like a prologue to Devil Colony. I'm very excited to read more.

I'm watching (well, I'm downloading) the HBO series, actually. Halos page-per-page ang adaptation. :)
