[General] Introduce Yourself!
Ngeee Baket namen Gano'n Rozzi? Dapat nga kung Filipino ka magaling kang magabasa ng Pilipino... Welcum nga pala sa iyo... ^_^
Basahin mo yung Schindler's List by Thomas Keneally kung gusto ng isang magandang Holocaust book... Yes it's the book that Steven Spielberg made that into a movie that won an Oscar Best Picture...
Also along with that I also recommend The Reader by Bernhard Schlink... kakaiba yung theme niya about Holocaust... basta read it...
Ayun lang...
Have a happy time here...
Hello po, newbie here.I'm from Cebu City, but currently working in Singapore as a Conference producer. In Cebu, I used to teach and do some social/historical research at the University of San Carlos.
I am more into fiction with post-modernist theme. I've read almost all the books of Haruki Murakami.. some works of Paul Auster. I am also into Franz Kafka, Fitzgerald, Raymond Carver.. etc.
I also read pop books Grisham and Ludlum, and Dan Brown (although I really don't like the latter that much).
Before, mahilig din ako sa non-fiction; more on post-modern theory and history.
I am not into authors that proselytize (Coelo, Mitch Albu/om.. )
If given the chance, I would love to read fictions written by Filipino authors in English not in Tagalog.
Salamat po, hope I am welcome here.
Welcome Basti and Rizzi :)Ako rin, recommend ko ung "The Town Behind The Wall" by Elie Wiesel and "Gotz and Meyer" if you like holocaust books. The latter is a little hard to find -- I bought mine at Booksale for 10 pesos, but it's certainly a worthwhile read. :)
Salamat sa mga recommendations..I'll try to find a copy of the books you mentioned :)Done reading Alicia..Am currently reading Man's Search for Meaning, hehe
Hello,I'm Prof. Fadul, a social science teacher at DLS-CSB. The year 2009 has been declared the International Year of Astronomy by the United Nation. I thought of writing a book on possible reasons why Jose Rizal did not become an astronomer. Browse my book at http://www.lulu.com/content/hardcover... and kindly e-mail me your comments, kind or cruel. :-)
My felicitations to our new member Basti...If you like to read Filipino authors writing in English prose you might like to give a try to some of our National l Artists for Literature Nick Joaquin and F. Sionil Jose...
Sionil Jose's Rosales saga novels is one of the best...
You might also like Alfred Yuson...
And do watch out for Miguel Syjuco's Man Booker winning novel Illustrado which might hit bookshelves next year...
That's all...
Good day to all...
wow!grabe na talaga ito.

Hi, I'm a member of our group from months now, but I'm lazing around, so I can't participate in some of our discussion. I'm Jaypee and I'm 17 years old. I started to read when I was 7 years old. I distinctly remember the book, "One Thousand and One Nights" or "The Arabian Nights". That book introduced me to the vast quantity of lands that I would never see. I started imagining that I'm in Baghdad, flying in the magical carpet and rescuing princesses. The odd thing is that the book is in Tagalog, and it was badly torn. The first English book I read was "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka. I read it, in one sitting, and I was amazed by the depth and macabre tone of the work. I love it and I thought ever since that Kafka is the coolest man in the earth ( David Lynch, too). My favorite books border the bizarre, gore and adventure. I love dark books, especially the works of Roald Dahl. I have a special spot on the works of Agatha Christie. I read all of her novels, and they were quite good ( the last ones are so..so). Also tried reading the novel "Finnegan's Wake" by Joyce and I can't pass around the first 50 pages. The plays of G.B. Shaw are good too, but they were somewhat whimsical and comic in manner.
My favorite genres are horror, detective fiction and gore. In fact, I twice read the novel " American Psycho" by Ellis. It was shocking and I almost puked, but it was better than others.
Some of my favorite authors:
Agatha Christie
Roald Dahl
Joseph Heller ( Catch-22 is my favorite book of all)
Edgar Allan Poe
Bret Easton Ellis
Stephen King
Isaac Asimov
Anton Chekhov ( Cherry Orchard, his finest)
Miguel Cervantes
Ayn Rnd and etc.
P.S. I vote that Dan Brown is one of the worst writers of 21st century. He knows how to recycle his sentences....
Thanks

I've been looking for "American Psycho" ever since I saw the movie. I kinda liked the movie. Was the book better than the movie?
I'm a Chekov fan too. The Cherry Orchard was beautiful but I can't choose between that and The Three Sisters.
Have fun at goodreads :)

But I genuinely like all of his works, especially "The Trial" and "Amerika". I read "The Metamorphosis" in an annotated version so it was fairly easy to understand some of his paragraphs. The effect of his first sentence in "The Metamorphosis" is chilling..."As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic vermin".
The American Psycho book is much more graphic depicting scenes of torture, cannibalism, necrophilia and gruesome things. The movie is somewhat a black comedy, but overall it was a good adaptation.
Chekhov is one of the finest playwright, "Uncle Vanya" is awesome, too.
Yeah, I'm having fun here.

The New York Times said "Dan Brown's best-selling primer on how not to write an English sentence".
Linguist Geoffrey Pullum and others posted several entries critical of Dan Brown's writing, at Language Log, calling Brown one of the "worst prose stylists in the history of literature" and saying Brown's "writing is not just bad; it is staggeringly, clumsily, thoughtlessly, almost ingeniously bad."
But I enjoyed some of his works especially Deception Point.
Jaypee wrote: "The New York Times said "Dan Brown's best-selling primer on how not to write an English sentence".Hehe. Wonder what they would write about James Patterson.
Re "American Psycho": I guess the book's much darker than I expected. Thanks for the info :)
