Hi Ruby 2! Welcome!"
haha parang Gilette Ruby 2 lang.
Hello :)I've been in goodreads for quite some time already but I joined this group..jsut today. Hehe. Anyway, I'm Christine and I'm a college student - though recently I've been concerning myself with Children's books and Fantasies and Fiction. I really like Fantasy, and I've never strayed so much out of that genre, so uhm I hope I could get recommendations on horror/sci-fi since I don't dwell on those too much ^^, and...I'm not a fan of Romance, too, and Vampires (ever since the Twilight series), and I know most people here know some Vampire stories that they'd want to share ^^ (I'm open to other genres too, since I want to explore) and...it's really cool to have all (or most of) the Filipinos in here, I haven't tried most goodreads's features aside from book reviewing and rating so, yeah, nice to meet you all. ^^
Welcome to The Filipino Group, Christine!I like Children's books. My favorite in this genre is The Little Prince followed by Charlotte's Web. What's yours?
There are many members who like fantasy and vampire stories. I am one of those who liked the Twilight series. Very few (in fact only Jzhun who says he is just exploring this genre but in fact collecting all the 1st ed books of Stephen King) like horror ha ha.
Hope you can be as active as possible. Feel free to post in any of our threads to your fancy.
Thanks, and actually that's my favorite book, too! :DWell, I'm having a hard time picking up vampire books because I'm actually afraid of Twilight...^^ well, I mean, to be honest I'm not a fan and ever since I read the series I don't like to read on paranormal/horror stuff and I really want to change that, so...:)
Thanks again.
At least we have something in common. In December, this group will have Children's Books as its theme. You can suggest books, open it for poll and moderate if you want to.
That's really great, I mean, lots of people will get to share and get new ideas, and maybe some will appreciate Children's books more. ^^
hello po, ako po si Nicole Presbitero.favorite books ko po ay mga YA, romance, paranormal, drama, comedy, etc.
and...anu pa ba?
So, Christine. Do we now have a deal for December read? Start thinking about your list of 10 children's books for poll which I can open for you sometime mid of next month.@Nicole: Welcome. Funny! you should know your favorites! Drama is one that I enjoy sometimes but I just don't have a lot of time to read them. Any recommendation?
@K.D. haha, bad memory from such a young age (except studying lol) well, i like drama that isn't too soppy or corny (cheesy is cool)well, i only read YA and a couple of adult books. um, i don't know what to recommend, but thanks for asking :)
@Blue Moon: thanks!
Hey, Nicole. How old are you? A couple of adult book? Hah! So what is your favorite cheesy drama on TV?
K.D. wrote: "So, Christine. Do we now have a deal for December read? @Blue Moon: Thanks :)
@Tina & Nicole: Hello! :)
Well, my favorites in that genre are: The Little Prince and Charlotte's Web. I know Ariel is for Peter Pan. A couple of months back, somebody read The Wicked. Artemis Fowl is also Children's. Even The Knife of Letting Go that I will read sometime this month is surprisingly classified as Children's.
No, too serious. It is more YA than Children's. Does anyone disagree with that? The children characters dominate the story but I don't think that makes the book Children's. Harry Potter series is Children's but they say only the first 3 books as it becomes dark from there. I have not read the series though.
Not familiar. Also: The Secret Garden, Pinocchio, Pippi Longstocking, Anne of Green Gables, Five Children and It, Northern Lights, Black Beauty, Heidi, Treasure Island, Rebecca and the Sunnybrook Farm, The Wind and the Willows and The Happy Prince.Given these choices, I'd go either for A Wrinkle of Time, Treasure Island or The Happy Prince.
The Time Quartet is YA, not Middle-Grade. But I don't have any problems with that. I want to read that series, too. It has elements of dystopia so a YES YES for me!
I think having a series for Children's book is a good idea, Christine. So, if the member wants to read more, then he/she can. Instead of 1 book only. Minsan, bitin. Do you have a copy of The Time Quartet?
You can easily follow Fablehaven cause the books costs less than 300 which I think is fairly cheap(except for the fifth book which is still on Hardcover and cost 1000+). I think it's hard to read the whole Time Quartet since I only see A Wrinkle in Time on our bookstores. I rarely see A Wind in the Door, Many Waters and A Swiftly Tilting Planet in bookstores.
You have a point. But before going to December read, we have Horror for November 2010. Jzhun seems to be inactive. I will drop him an email. We need to open the poll for ten nominated books.
Do you have any favorite horror book, Aaron? Or to all: any recommendation for horror? Well, aside from The Exorcist (the scariest horror movie of all times) and on or two works of Stephen King (that will be Jzhun's choice definitely because he is a big fan of King).
i think Powerbooks has the whole Time Quartet collection. A friend of mine way back in college was bookpushing a wrinkle in time for me, we were then talking about Stephen Hawking and Einstein's theory of relativity.
But that will be too prohibitive for our members, Ranee. Christine, in choosing the nominated books, consider these 4 criteria:
1) Appropriateness of the book to the theme
2) Availability and price of the book
3) Popularity of the book or its author
4) Your preference as the moderator
Please let me have your final 10 by November 6th.
I'm not a horror fan. The only horror genre novels I know are those from Marcus Sedgwick and Tim Bowler, both of which are hard to find copies of their books here. I think Will is a horror fan, let's ask him.
yup I agree, KD. Just wanted to share, sort of forgot about the book and then remembered it from reading the thread. I like Children's books in general, so I think I'd participate on that . Go Christine!
Hmm.. I find it hard to pick titles when it comes to favorite horror novel, but I always say I like King's The Long Walk. he was Bachman during that time, and for some reason I find this alterego more imaginative than King himself. Another novel I find scary is The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. If you're looking for Filipino horror novels, then you can try Yvette Tan's Waking the Dead and other stories. You can even check out David Hontiveros' Craving.
If you're looking for quick horror reads, though, might I suggest microhorror.com.
Forgot to mention my most favorite novel ever, Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. It is still a horror novel without those supernatural elements.
Will wrote: "Another novel I find scary is The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. "The Turn of the Screw has a lot of atmosphere and it's more "what happened" scary, I suppose the kind psychologists would love to read. I just feel that James writes to heavily, so I have to be honest and say that I found the opera scarier (and more enjoyable).
Thanks for the suggestions, Will. @Maryse: I have not read The Turn of the Screw but Will surprised me to say that it is scary. I think I have to read it sometime soon to find out for myself. BTW, how are you? It's been a while since your last post here in GR-TFG.

2) Availability and..."
Oh, :D and thanks a lot for the suggestions, I took note of them. :)
And,here's a tentative list of what I have in mind:
-The Giver
-Matilda (or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?)
-Chinese Cinderella
-The Little Prince
-The Chronicles of Narnia
-The Velveteen Rabbit
-Coraline
Please tell me what you think of this list. And I will think about some of the series I've read, but most of them I wasn't able to complete. Hehe. And I don't have a copy of The Time Quartet, but I will try to get a hold and read it somehow.
And thanks Ranee! :D
Oh yeah, Christine. That looks like a good fun list! I already read 3 (The Giver, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and of course The Little Prince) and I would not mind reading them again. I will just check if The Giver already became the Book of the Month in the past that will be a reason for us to disqualify it. I will let you know.I am curious about The Chronicles of Narnia because of Tina and Stephen's favorable comments (or expectation especially in Tina's case) about the whole series. Hmmm. Given this list I will probably go for that one and read one book per week during the holiday season. Then probably rent the movies and watch them marathon style! ha ha.
I think we will just have to add Aaron's suggestion, Fablehaven and Ranee's A Wrinkle in Time. Then the list is complete. Your assignment with Nov 6 as deadline is now done. Good job!
K.D. wrote: "Oh yeah, Christine. That looks like a good fun list! I already read 3 (The Giver, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and of course The Little Prince) and I would not mind reading them again. I will ..."Wow, thanks! :D
And okay let's add Fablehaven and A Wrinkle in Time on the list (I haven't read them as of the moment).
Though there are seven books in the series it's quite an easy read and quite fun,so yes please read them.:D
Thanks so much, I feel quite fulfilled. :D
Hope you can participate for our November read as well Christine. We need more active readers for our monthly reads especially young blood like you. We need enthusiastic readers who really troop to the bookstore and copies of the winning book, read it and participate in the discussion.
K.D. wrote: "Hope you can participate for our November read as well Christine. We need more active readers for our monthly reads especially young blood like you. We need enthusiastic readers who really troop to..."Thanks! I should persuade some of my friends to be active again. :)
Yes, please do. More active members means more messages in our threads. More messages means more ideas. More ideas means more friends. More friends means more fun! With Children's as December theme for our book, hope more young members will participate so we can end the year with a bang!
Welcome to TFG group, Kate. Yes, we are all fun here. Thanks. There are so many members here who adore Nicholas Sparks. I have some of his books and I am open to sharing (lending or sometimes I give them away for free) my books. That's one good thing that I also enjoy in this group. I get to borrow from the likes of Ace, Ranee, Emir and of course from K. Joselito. So, in case you want to borrow and if you are just within Metro Manila, watch out for the schedule for forthcoming meet ups. We can swap, lend, borrow and sometimes win books in one of the many fun games during the affair. Then of course you get to meet people and win friends (young and young at hearts alike). No one has won enemies yet fortunately ha ha.

Looks like our fellow moderator here has already given you a fitting, warm welcome. So I'm just gonna give my signature remark. . .
My warm regards and happy reading!^_^
Enjoy your stay here...
Hi there! I'm Nicole Bianca Em..(wag na kasi panget apilido ko)
I'm good with Bee, lazy term for Bianca and/or Bellatrix (Lestrange) we've lots in common.
FACT: I'm here @ work doing something non work related and it feels gooood :))
I'm a blogger and I'm not a cosplayer but I am an active spectator.
A certain book made me cry so hard..
HP7! the part with the Prince's Tale.
So book wise! I love to read. Used to read a lot when I was younger and unemployed haha! eversince I started working.. with the forever graveyard-I-only-do-it-for-the-10%-night-differential-oops-I-forgot-It's-mandatory schedule, I totally forgot about books.
That, and there was a time when I'd rather use my 750 PHP to buy myself a really nice top than to actually purchase a good book. pft priorities -.-
I went on a 4 day VL from work and..I just fell in love with books--all over again!
oooh I love the smell new books! And the soft, crisp sound of it as I turn the pages.
When I'm reading, I really get into it. I try to guess what's gonna happen next, what led the protagonist to do this, to say that. What's the twist. It's great fun! specially when you guessed it right.
One fatal flaw... it would be sacrilegious to you all.
I DO NOT like reading CLASSICS.
I am very very much into popular contemporaries that I find it soo hard to stick with the classics.
Though I have been fairly productive during my 4 day leave, and proud! having read the following:
Fallen by Lauren Kate
Torment by Lauren Kate
Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
Vampire Kisses 5,6,7 by Ellen Schreiber
Falling from Grace by S.L Naeole
currently rereading HP 7, just cause I'm so looking forward to November 19.
Unfinished reads:
The Witching Hour by Anne Rice
The Holy Blood, Holy Grail by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln
I hope through here I'd be able to gain book loving friends *I don't have a lot/any* and that I would find it in my heart and in my clock to read classic novels.
And of course I'm open and I have all the time for YA reads. :))
Oh Bee. Welcome to The Filipino Group. Even if you do not read classics, that's okay. I hate most classics too but I am compelled to read them because they are included in 1001 books and I already made a pact with my brother to finish them before I die ha ha.

Hi Beee!
Welcome to The Filipino Group! Hope you'll have grand time here.
Just visited your blog and it seems my kinda thing, it's right up my alley. I specially liked the the things you said about yourself on the sidebar.
Enjoy!
My warm regards and happy reading! ^_^
Hello! Hi! it's me, TRICIA! I'm just new here. Heh. If talking about books, I don't know yet my preferred genre or 'tricia' books. I read whatever comes to my hand. I'm a sucker for bargain books and I rarely buy new ones. I blog too [isaw08.wordpress.com] and also knew/met some Good Reads people thru Filipino Book Bloggers, Twitter and Shelfari :)
