Ranee | 1902 comments hi. I'm Ranee. I've been a passive member of this group, partly because of my profession and because I do facebooking more than visiting this site.
Hmmm... but I think my daily routine would change this time.
I'm from Pangasinan but currently a doctor, surgeon-in-training, here in Manila. I love books. I remember, during my very first day of school, it was the bookshelf that I ran to instead of the nearby box of toys. I was four then. Now that I'm older, the thrill of going to the bookstore has not left me,although buying them is another story. Being half Ilocano, my parents brought us up with the thinking that things (including books)are only to be bought when needed. So I grew up reading the books assigned for our literature subject and nothing for leisure. that is until I came to study in Manila and have discovered Booksale. Then came medschool, so I am trapped to reading my medbooks and tons and tons of photocopied lecture notes. So my leisure reading and dream to build my own empire of rows of books is put to a halt (under the "still in construction" section beside the "i'll be rich" section and below the "help the poor and the sick" section of my things to-do list)
My point, I am Ranee and I love books. I am glad to be in goodreads and am glad to have joined this group!

By the way, I've won 3,000 pesos worth of Gift certificate to Fully booked and is eager to buy (obviously) books. What titles do you recommend? but i have to say, they would have to be marked as to-read for a very long time until i finish my training.
Sayang kasi ang pagkakataon na bumili ng libro na hindi mabigat sa bulsa, hehe.

Hi Missoni, Welcome here! Hope you'll enjoy your stay. And don't worry, despite of the fact that most of us enjoy fantasy reads that doesn't mean we are shallow people to not welcome you because you have different choice of books. Maybe, we just know how to have fun and enjoy places you don't have the chance to visit everyday. And there are still a lot of people here who choses serious books more than fantasy like Kuya Doni, the alien-assitant moderator himself, etc. :))

Hi Ranee, welcome to Goodreads. I was a frustrated doctor. I took up Med Tech but was not able to continue to medicine proper because of lack of money. Now, I am an IT Manager and have 1000 books in my shelves. 80% of which are still marked-to-read.
Recommendation: what genre do you like most?
You can click Find Books > Titles, etc. at the top of the screen and start from there. When you click the book, you will have an idea whether the book is good or bad depending on the rating. I also normally read some of the well-liked reviews. You can also check the most popular books among your friends here in Goodreads. Goodluck!

Thanks for making me your example, Aaron Vincent. I also read sci fi. I always see to it that I read at least one sci fi each month. This month I read H. G. Wells' THE TIME MACHINE and Kurt Vonnegut's SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE. Last month, I read Suzanne Collins' CATCHING FIRE. I just don't want to read one sci-fi after the other because I go for variety. I also read LOLITA and Jzhunagev even broadcasted in one of the threads here in the Filipino group.

Missoni, welcome again. Try reading sci-fi, you will like the feeling of going back to your childhood (even if you are still 16 y/o). BTW, thanks for adding me as your friend here in Goodreads.

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments I agree with Doni, Missoni, you really can't say you will not like something unless you tried it. Not everything about sci-fi is childish. :)

Hi Ranee. Wow, surgeon-in-training. Medical clerk palang ako, also in my surgery rotation (which I'm not particularly fond of), and yeah, I don't have time to read books either but I try sneaking some pages while eating or while I'm in the loo. Ehehehehe.

Oooh, 3000 pesos worth of books. Inggit ako. :) Since it's Fully Booked, I suggest you look for newer titles, newly published ones that you really like since it will take some time before they reach the Booksale book shelves. Like what Kuya Doni said, it depends on the type of genre you like. Since "The Hunger Games" seems to be getting good reviews, you could try that if you're into sci-fi. Stay away from books you would find in Booksale, unless you can't live without that book. If they don't have a book you like, you can ask the sales people and they often offer to pre-order it for you without any extra charges. :)

Ranee | 1902 comments Aaron Vincent: not geeky at all. on the contrary, it's all fun. imagine, get to share books and thoughts at the same time...with people who understands what you're talking about. hehe

Doni: thanks! I would try that. i have my eye on Murakami. I am into Asian lit now. But 3,000 is a lot,my murakami is almost complete. I need new titles to add to my collection.
And yes, i too have not read Twilight and do not intend to do so, at least for the next decade. hehe.

Maryse: Surgery I think is an acquired "taste", hehe. it's either you'll like it or not. I just happen to love thinking with my hands. I'll go check on " the Hunger Games"

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Hi Ranee! I happen to be the Alien they're talking about. Genres, like surgery, are acquired "taste" like surgery (talk about similes! Ahahaha! :D)
For me I read the a broad genre from horror, sci-fi, romance, action, adventure fanstasy... there's so many to choose, really... It's just like finding you niche... A genre where you feel comfortable. I agree with Maryse that you buy those ones that are just hot off the press. There's also nothing bad with buying a book that caught your fancy. You'll just never know where your own book choice might get you in... Reading is a adventure... and like the carabao on the fields I strongly suggest you wallow in it. Either be it on mud or a clear cool pond (Hwow! Talk about metaphors! Ahahaha! :D)

What I'm saying is Welcome to the Filipino Group and have some fun! At Home ka dito!

ain't that just a good catch-phrase for our group...

message 565: by Joselito Honestly (new)

Joselito Honestly and Brilliantly (joselitohonestlyandbrilliantly) I am Joselito. I am a lawyer and a libel expert. I have successfully prosecuted a lot of people for libelous posts and they are still in jail right now.

I like to read cheap, second-hand books with the smell and scribblings of their previous owners, dead and alive. I'm reading one-by-one the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die and, when I'm finished with them, those other books in the 501 Must Read Books.

I'm currently reading John Lyly's "Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit" and I am a proud owner of an 1895 edition of this book (first published in 1579). This book is one of those listed in the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die so it is inevitable that I read this. I am reading it at a very fast clip of one sentence a day but lest you think that I am partially blind, I couldn't go any faster than that not only because I am reading other books (I can read two books simultaneously, one eye for each book, which you can do too if you practice) but also because is written in old English(at least my copy is. Right now I've just finished this portion:

"If my tongue were able to vtter the ioyes that my heart hath conceiued, I feare me though I be well beloued, yet I fhould hardly be beleeued. Ah my Lucilla, how much am I bound to thee, which preferreft mine vnworthineffe, before thy Fathers wrath: my happineffe, before thine owne miffortune: my loue, before thine owne life? How might I excell thee in curtefie, whom no mortall creature can exceed in conftancie? I find it now for a fetled truth, which earft I accompted for a vaine talke, that the purple dye will neuer ftaine, that the pure Cyuet will neuer loofe his fauour, that the greene Laurell will neuer chaunge his coulour, that beautie can neuer be blotted with difcourtefie. As touching fecrecie in this behalf, affure thy felfe, that I will not fo much as tell it to my felfe."

I bought this charming masterpiece for only P80.00. Hardbound, smelling like an unwashed woman, with all the germs of more than a century.

Moe (moe_b) | 84 comments Hi guys! I'm Moe and I'm a newbie here. I'm a corporate slave with a lot of passions like travels, fashion design, cooking and eating Italian, films, photography and lomography. But no matter how busy I am, I always find time for my first and greatest love: Books! I'm never without one (or two) wherever I go. I read all types of books: self-help, fiction, biographies, fantasy, suspense but my favorites are travel and food memoirs like Frances Mayes', Alice Steinbach's and Peter Mayle's books(because I love to travel and eat good food). Heck, I'd skip buying a meal for a book I really like for I'm sure it will feed me more. ;)

My favorite books are: Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (so love love love love love this book), Shanghai Baby & Marrying Buddha by Wei Hui and all of Haruki Murakami's works, particularly Norwegian Wood and South of The Border, West of The Sun. I also like Paolo Coelho's books. Booksale is my utopia and you can find me checking out this shop at any mall I go to. ;)

I'm sure I'll love it here at Goodreads! ;)
