So we've talked about ongoing series that's on our pull lists. What about comics from the past that we're just now catching up on? What are you currently reading/rereading?

I'm reading The Metabarons. Still looking for a medieval fantasy/drama that's been released in recent years.

michelle+8 (michelleplus8) Does House of M count? It's a Marvel event from a few years ago.

A friend down at the pub keeps recommending Preacher. I got the first few issues, but I haven't started reading it, yet. I'm nervous because I've never really liked any comics that weren't Marvel. :/

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Preacher is wild! Very funny and edgy. It skewers religion, so it's controversial.

I'm trying to decide what to start next. The list is long:
The Runaways by Brian K Vaughan
Two David Mack/Daredevil trades
The Green Woman by Peter Straub. I really love the art in and it's about a serial killer so I'm very interested-may read that first.
Fatale
Fables: Superteam
Batwoman Hydrology
Night Mary

Andromeda M31 (huffpuff) Oh, Preacher. I'll never forget when my sweet Catholic friend discovered it on my book shelf. I was interested in continuing to collect the Batwoman trades until I discovered the Hydrology arc has been going on for over a year.

I'm sort of embarrassed to admit the current comics I'm trying to gather are all of the Super Hero Big Two variety.

I'm really enjoying Gail Simone's Birds of Prey Run. Initially the cheese cake art bothered me, but it's just... so much fun!

Since Loki's stay in Journey Into Mystery has finished, I'm looking to buy all the trades. I know a lot of the run is unfortunately mired in company cross overs, but Kid!Loki and Gillen's writing are worth the confusion.

The recent suggestions for the comic read of the month have inspired me to seek out Sweet Tooth...

Preacher is not for everyone, right!

message 6: by michelle+8 (new)

michelle+8 (michelleplus8) I'm pretty religious, but I can handle a skewering as long as it doesn't use a strawman fallacy. That just gets on my nerves.

message 7: by michelle+8 (new)

michelle+8 (michelleplus8) I read it and liked it. I'm not very into X-Men, but I love the Avengers and it was a good story. Wolverine is pretty prominent, and I do like him. Also, it was neat to see the Scarlet Witch, who I had heard about but never actually seen in the comics before. Some of the parts were kind of hear-wrenching, with people who care about each other fighting on opposite sides. AvX Consequences is still coming out, and I'm reading / enjoying it.

message 8: by Andromeda (new)

Andromeda M31 (huffpuff) Although lambasting religion was a big part of Preacher, I enjoyed it more for the over the top grotesque portrayal of America. If I remember right, the main argument against God is that HE LETS BAD THINGS HAPPEN. Which I always find ridiculous, considering that men who have free will are the ones committing heinous acts. Preacher is fun, but it goes out of its way to offend you. Repeatedly.

I want to like Batwoman more than I do. It's still hard for me to except Magic and Metaphysics in Gotham. Also I hate long superhero story lines. J.H. Williams' art is amazing, but I thought he was more on point in Promethea, where his surreal layouts were justified.

I bought the first trade of Manhatten Projects, but I'm not sold on it for a series. Why is Oppenheimer a split personality serial killer? Only the writer knows.

Yup, I'm referring to ANY one-shots or series that ended.

I remember when I first started reading comics, I didn't read anything BUT Marvel & DC superheroes. As I got older, my preferences changed dramatically and it became the other way around. Nowadays, I'm only following 2-3 superheroes/villains at a time. Preacher was one of the first comics that exposed me to other genres and it easily became a favorite. I need to go back and reread it. I haven't picked it up in years.

I didn't get pass the first issue. It wasn't bad. It just didn't grab my attention and sizing it up with all the other comics I got waiting in my queue, I decided to drop it. So, what were they using the atomic bomb as a front for?

Well, SPOILER: Leslie Groves is creating a Shadow Government of the United States. To what purpose? Not sure. Funneling more money into mega weapons? They've downloaded Roosevelt's brain into a computer.

Just realized Manhattan Projects talk should probably be on that Pull List Thread. Oops!

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Michelle, I had to look up strawman fallacy. :) I get what you mean.
I'm not religious the way I was raised anymore. However, I'm fascinated by religion and feel compelled to defend its ideals when people attack it.

At the same time I'm all for religion-based humor. Preacher was very funny at times and spectacularly absurd but also made some valid points about the institution of religion-the blind acceptance some people have.
I'm extremely curious to hear what you think of it.

Andromeda said it perfectly too. Preacher goes out of its way to offend repeatedly.

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments Buying these 2 trades (m/m and blues!!) tomorrow and planning to read them immediately. Unlike the last three I've let collect dust. Also, getting Locke & Key due to Kay's encouragement.

Oops, Drawn Together is NOT a comic. How disappointing. Fooled by the bad m/m romance covers yet again! However, that cover would make a fantastic comic.

Anna (Bananas) | 757 comments I just started The Furies by Mike Carey, art by John Bolton. First 10 pages - stunning.

I read The Green Woman by Peter Straub and Michael Easton recently and enjoyed it very much, especially because it also features Bolton's art. I loved his work in Harlequin Valentine and Lucifer too. So I'm officially a John Bolton fan.

The Furies by Mike Carey
The Green Woman by Peter Straub
Harlequin Valentine by Neil Gaiman
Lucifer, Vol. 1 Devil in the Gateway (Lucifer, #1) by Mike Carey
