Oh good to hear the Pickwick Papers is great. I plan to read all Dickens' novels (8 and counting), but was a bit worried that PP would be a let down, since it is not that well known.

message 8: by Tasha (new)

Tasha PP is absolutely hilarious! I was worried too, for the same reason, but am totally impressed! I definitely recommend it! :)

Excellent! I also read recently at http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogsp... that Barnaby Rudge was good too, which I was happy to know. Of his "famous" books, I only really have Oliver Twist to read yet and the rest are the lesser known novels.

message 17: by Magdalena (new)

Magdalena (mayamagdalena) | 3 comments it looks nice with the covers in your lists, but it would be great if you would write out the titles and/or the author too, because it's impossible to see what books they are (at least on my computer screen).

message 18: by Elizabeth☮ (new)

Elizabeth☮ @ magdalena,

i put in titles in my list. i understand how difficult it can be to read.

@ sydney,
i'm eager to read your review for matterhorn. that's on my list for my christmas break.

message 19: by Chris (new)

Chris 1. "11/22/63" from the library. I had this on reserve and was hoping to get it closer to the actual date. But who knows, I may still be reading it then!

2. "Of Mice and Men." A re-read from my own bookshelf. Devastatingly beautiful.

3. See answer #1. This is a tome, 800+ pages! I'm hoping for lots of reading time this weekend! This may be one of the few times I wish I had a Kindle since I read in bed a lot (shhhh, don't tell Simon!), but there is a sense of satisfaction when I put my bookmark in and can see my progress!

4. "In Other Rooms, Other Wonders" for book club, and Trollope's "The Warden."

I read Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy earlier this year and it took me several weeks to get through it, even though it isn't that long. I kept falling asleep after reading only twenty pages and had to re-read several chapters. Thank heavens I didn't try the audiobook version!

message 22: by Kim (new)

Kim | 7 comments For those that are getting into House of Leaves: just be willing to forgive yourself when you want to skim some of the more obtuse parts. It's ok, you'll get what you need out of it.

Just bought: Paragon Walk which is the third in a mystery series, I like it but wondering if I will tire of the author's conventions soon. I'm switching from audiobook to text to see if it reads differently.

Just finished: Callander Square and The Emperor of All Maladies. I tend to do one fiction and one non at the same time so something will fit my mood. The former is from the same mystery series.

Reading now: Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail though it's kind of bumming me out so I might need to find something else. I get really emotionally effected by books and if an author is depressed, I'll get depressed. No Plath for me.

To read next: whatever fiction book my book club picks on Monday! Feel free to suggest nice compact books, because I am at a loss as to what to suggest to them!

I really like that Anne Perry series (and her William Monk series even more!), but I don't think I'd want to read the books too close together. They can be quite dark, mainly because she's so good (too good?) at really making you feel the helplessness of being in a situation you can't change or run away from, especially for women.

message 24: by Becky (new)

Becky Yamarik | 74 comments Just Finished Stones from the River, it was AMAZING. . . I know Gav and Simon, it IS about WW2, but still amazing. Main character is a dwarf, and I don't know why, but for years I assumed (b/c there's a painting of a village on the cover and the swastika photo was too small I didn't notice), I thought it was about Tolkien dwarfs. . . but it's not. . . GREAT read! 5 stars

Currently reading from Library Half of a Yellow Sun on audio, An Economist Gets Lunch: New Rules for Everyday Foodies, which oddly, I found on the ground at the San Jose airport. It was actually on my TBR b/c the NY TImes book review podcast had given it a great review and the library didn't have it, so I was pondering whether to buy it. So, I have to admit that although I DID ask around if it belonged to anyone who was boarding our plane, I didn't turn it in to airport personel and kept it. . . is that wrong??

I just picked up The Warden from the library, that's next!

message 25: by Ruthiella (new)

Ruthiella | 272 comments @Becky: No, that is not wrong. You did your due dilligence in trying to find the owner and then gave the book a good home :0

message 26: by Kate (last edited Oct 26, 2012 12:12PM) (new)

Kate | 51 comments I just borrowed Persuasuin by Jane Austen and The Appointment by Herta Muller, both from the library. I have recently bought too many to list (and have hidden some away so as not to attract comments from spouse and children). Currrently, I am reading the aforementioned Persuasion and also Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter by Mario Vargas Llosa which I read when it was first published and is a wonderful reread. Next up, The Appointment for book club and then a mystery off my TBR, but not sure which one. Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter A Novel by Mario Vargas Llosa Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter A Novel by Mario Vargas Llosa

message 30: by Paul (new)

Paul Titley (paultitley) | 8 comments Hello Everyone, first time poster here after discovering the podcast and, as a result, Goodreads a couple of weeks ago...

Last book borrowed was the first in the Game of Thrones series..

2. I completed Ten Weeks in Africaby JM Shaw. Enough conflicting emotion for me to leave a review...

3. I generally read 3 books at a time - the first with a 'Classic' tilt: Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome,
the second more Contemporary: I, Partridge: We Need to Talk About Alan.
And finally, a Sci-Fi / Fantasy / Horror: The Stand by Stephen King.

4. What you are going to read next...
To join in with Classically challenged, I'm going to give The Warden a whirl (I am disappointed I missed Persuasion)
I'm really looking forward to The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt - I hope it meets my expectations,
And I'll be getting into the world of Game of Thrones - which I know little about apart from the size of the book!

2. What you have just read...Talulla Rising, which I finished an hour ago.

3. What you are reading now... Since I just finished my last book an hour ago, nothing yet.

4. What you are going to read next...
Not sure yet. Maybe the aforementioned My First Suicide. Or maybe Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by John Le Carre, which I've been meaning to read for awhile. There's also When Will There by Good News by Kate Atkinson waiting in my unread pile. Any suggestions?

Borrowed Cutting for Stone Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese from a friend
Bought Dodger Dodger by Terry Pratchett for a bookclub read.

2. What you have just read...
Finished Spider's Bite Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep a while ago. Too much over-time, a long commute and various reading commitments have kept me busy recently.

3. What you are reading now...
Unusually for me I have several on the go
Drummer Boy Drummer Boy (Sheriff Frank Littlefield, #2) by Scott Nicholson - a great book but stuck in e-book limbo because I don't have an e-reader and rarely get a long enough stretch of time at my computer to finish this book.
To the End of the Land To the End of the Land by David Grossman A book I want to read, think I should read but am not sure I will enjoy because of the writing style.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain I'm listening to the audio book and Elijah Wood's narration is fantastic but I'm still stuck in the middle.
Dodger Dodger by Terry Pratchett a bookclub read. Not what I expected but still quite good

4. What you are going to read next...
The Windup Girl The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi
Twelve Twelve (The Danilov Quintet, #1) by Jasper Kent
or
Mercy Mercy by Jussi Adler-Olsen

Ruthiella | 272 comments @paul - once you have finished The Sisters Brothers, you could go to http://www.themorningnews.org/tob/sta.... Its entry and subsequent review in the 2012 Tournament of Books really clinched my resolve to read the book. PS The Sisters Brothers also went on to win the tournament.
