Vegan? That's hard core, isn't it? Is it going to be hard to follow? No milk, eggs, cheese... right? Anything from an animal is off limits? Sooo healthy!

Thanks, Trish. I'm trying to use only books I have or can get at the library. I'll see if I can find that Kristin Higgans book at the library - I don't recall reading her before.

Ditto that Lisa Kay! I had so many prejudices before going vegan and although I'm not perfect yet the trouble is not milk, cheese and eggs but the fact that the rest of the world aren't vegan. Cooking is so much easier, the tricky part is going to (some) restaurants. And yay for the health benefits - you can really feel some of them straightaway!
I have tried a couple of vegan restaurants here in California, but finally found my favorite:
Loving Hut
. I understand they have several locations. I almost always order the Tuno Melt, but my BFF tried the Patty Melt and would NOT share, so I knew it was good. LOL! Sure enough, I went back later and ordered it. Wonderful![image error]

Thanks Lisa Kay! Sounds really good! Wish they would open in Europe xD I have found some great vegan dishes at "common" restaurants but especially when travelling (I was in Germany last week and Spain this summer) and I didn't speak the language then I have had some slip ups.
Yes, a language barrier would make it difficult. The first week I tried to go vegan (which I'm not counting in my start date), I went to a Chinese restaurant and ordered the vegetable house rice...came with fried egg in it. I ate it b/c I was starved, but I've learned to inquire more. What surprises me is the number of people who are vegetarian and don't know what "vegan" means. Interesting.
Lisa Kay wrote: "Yes, a language barrier would make it difficult. The first week I tried to go vegan (which I'm not counting in my start date), I went to a Chinese restaurant and ordered the vegetable house rice....."I done similar things! Once I ordered veggie noodles and when they arrived I realize that they are egg noodles. This weekend I ordered sesame pancake and then I was like - oh wait this is not at home where pancakes are vegan (!) - so I just ate the filling. Well, especially around other people I think it's important not to fuzz over small stuff. Then we might scare them away from trying to be (partly) vegan.
I don't have a start date (I know many have) but I can't say "I will never eat meat" because then I crave it but when I take one day at a time I absolutely don't want to eat it. Weird, right?
I know - it's crazy! And I've also met vegetarians who are almost against eating vegan. So strange! Even when I was a carnivore I ate quite a bit of vegan food.
Susanne wrote: "Well, especially around other people I think it's important not to fuzz over small stuff. Then we might scare them away from trying to be (partly) vegan."Completely agree with you there, Susanne. Dr. Barnard of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine really talks about easing into it. Also, for people to try "one meal at a time." I recently heard the term (on an old Oprah??) of "veganish." Some people will say they are vegan "most of the time," and when they eat meat they are very "conscious" about it, some people even down to considering where they get their meat.
I can't say I'll never eat meat, either. In fact, I'm planing on cooking a turkey on Thanksgiving.
I'm certainly not going to "sweat the small stuff." I went to the movies weeks ago and had a box of Junior Mints. On the back it said, "may have lest than 1% milk" - or some such. I wasn't going to give them up! LOL! Or maybe something says, "made in a facility that uses milk..."
BTW, we have a product here in the states called, "Beyond Meat" and it satisfies my desire for chicken. Even the workmen couldn't believe it wasn't chicken. (And you know how so many make fun of the "alternative meat" and "meat substitute" products. Not any of it true with this one!)
