Andrea Ready set go!...

Rosemary An interesting section where Alyosha seems to be drawn into his brothers' stories more deeply.

Lise annoyed me with the way she is constantly contradicting herself!

Ginny I'm so happy that I'm almost caught up with the group! I broke my sternum so have been put on part time work for the next couple of weeks. I've been reading this book during my times of resting up. Lise annoys me as well. I'm feeling the tension growing of all of the in fighting coming to a head. Someone is going to snap, but who?

Rosemary Wow sorry to hear about your injury Ginny - but at least you can catch up on your reading :) I read loads while I had health problems. It's great to have better health of course but I do miss the reading time!

Sera Ginny, I hope that you are feeling better.

I finished this section of reading today.

Lise is immature in my opinion and likely self-conscious because of her infirmity. I'm curious to see whether she grows up throughout the course of the novel.

I found Ivan's comments about the suffering of children to be the most thought provoking part of the book thus far. I believe that his feelings emulate many of those people who struggle with their faith in God. Dostoevsky really nailed it in this chapter. Moreover, I have a completely new perspective in regard to Ivan now. I originally found him to be a bit creepy, but now I understand the turmoil that he has had inside of him and how powerless he feels to cease all that is cruel and inhumane with the world.

I am finding this book to be brilliant on many levels.

Andrea (tasseled) | 189 comments It's sort of funny how everyone dislikes Lise for being so contradicting. I find her to be a typical young girl (I'm not sure about her age, but she comes off as a teen) and thus acting appropriately. We all used to be those kind of brats when we liked a boy and pretended like he didn't exist to show our love (how contradicting is that? :))

I agree with Sera about Ivan's struggles with faith. It was fascinating to finally look into the depths of the character's soul. Previous theological discussions in the book really bored me, but this one was very interesting.

Sera I don't dislike Lise at all. She just seems like an odd match for Aloysha, because of his maturity and calm and thoughtful disposition.
