tesser?
...on my way home from Baltimore, where I met Sarah Pi for a beer at the end of the day! She's even more lovely in person than on the internet, so now you'll all have to head to Maryland to say hello.Anyway, it was so nice to have a real-world interaction with a TCer that I now want to visit all the other far-flung locations that Gail has mapped out for us and meet the whole group. Might take a while--but it's good to have goals.
Woohoo. I can't wait for your visit Jonathan. :D
It is a really nice station. Grand, but not overwhelmingly large.Did any of your freight routes run through Baltimore, Larry?
No, not these days. But back in the early '80s I was a manager in Baltimore. Our freight trains went right through there. There are tunnels under the streets on either end of the station (Union tunnel to the north, and B&P -- Baltimore and Potomac -- tunnel to the south). There's an opening midway through the B&P tunnel, right by Pennsylvania Ave -- and nearby a bronze statue of Billie Holliday.
Back in the 1800s there were several rail lines into Baltimore. When Lincoln made his way to Washington after being elected, his train went to the terminus from the north over by Boston Street. Then he had to go by carriage (under cover) to the Baltimore & Ohio station several blocks over.
Union Station finally unified all of the trains in and out of the city.
I like train stations. The one in St Louis is nice too. IMHO. They're modernizing the Denver one just fine, in my humble little opinion.
St. Louis Union Station is a gem. I used to go there when I was a kid, when it was an operating terminal. I LOVED being there. One time I remember coming in through the door, and there were a bunch of square dancers doing their thing. The sound from the music and their feet echoed throughout the huge terminal building.I've been back in the last few years. It's still nice as a shopping venue -- but the trains were magnificent there back in the day.
This it the train station I use to get to work. The journeys end.
That's some fascinating history, Larry. You should really write a book of railroad lore. I'd read it.Sally, I like train stations too. Especially the grand, old imposing ones like Baltimore, Philly, DC, etc. I've never seen the one in St. Louis, but maybe I'll check out the one in Denver if I ever manage to visit you and Petra in CO.

When you come to visit I will take you. :)

Chicago and D.C. have nice Union Stations too.
In the train stations in Italy there is nowhere to sit.

Man. Do come visit. I'll stroll Leah around in the jogging stroller while we visit the 16th street mall. Come July/August maybe?
Kansas City has a very nicely restored Union Station.Once I went to Utica New York to interview for a job. The interview was held at the Superintendent's office in (you guessed it) Union Station, which was also beautifully restoreed. The building was put up by the New York Central with three floors, the top one being intended for occupation by the Central's "Lines East" HQ. That never happened -- and the top floor was never finished inside. They took me on a tour to see an empty floor from the early 1900s. It was cool.
Sally wrote: "Man. Do come visit. I'll stroll Leah around in the jogging stroller while we visit the 16th street mall. Come July/August maybe?"I just might. Nothing like a long train ride (so long as you get a sleeper)--always meet interesting people along the way, and it's just a great way to travel. Of course, many people nowadays take those aero-plane thingies across the country, but I'm suspicious of the whole concept.
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. I was nine. I was really into John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer (Grease 1 and 2), Peggy Sue Got Married, all things 50's and Sock Hop-ish, and really awkward that year.
Jonathan, Denver's Union Station is undergoing a major renovation. It will be beautiful when it is done, but right now is just a hole in the ground.http://www.denverunionstation.org/ind...
Denver has some really interesting architecture. come see!
I wore a pinstriped, three piece polyester suit. I didn't get the job, which would have been in Syracuse. I was glad I didn't get it.
Oh NO! It already started!?!?! Oh sad. Petra, can we meet up please soon at Las Delicias? We've been talking about it since last fall!
the original building is still there, Sally. It will be incorporated into the new project. I think it is a historical landmark.
That would be so nice if the three of you could meet up.
ms.petra wrote: "Jonathan, Denver's Union Station is undergoing a major renovation..."So long as they put it back together when they're done, Petra. One of the saddest sights I ever saw was the new train station in Schenectady, NY--just a plain elevated platform, decorated with big photographs of the beautiful old Schenectady station, which was demolished. Really a shame.
Love to meet you at Las Delicias in March, but no can do. I'm going to the Netherlands then. Maybe another time?

Are you meeting up with Janine?

Larry wrote: "The station in Albany was vacant for many years. It's a Key Bank building now."I've been to Albany on the train. The current Amtrak station is a recent building? I don't remember it well, but it seemed to have decent amenities, etc.
Gail "cyborg" wrote: "Are you meeting up with Janine?"I'd really like to, but I have to ask her what her schedule is like. She's in Groningen, which is a little bit difficult to get to, and I'm on a press trip with a lot of planned activities, so it may be tricky to find a window of time that works. But anyway, if feasible, it would be great to meet her.
