This had great potentially for a five star rating, but some of the scenes and dialogue I had issues with. Characters of the hero and heroine were lacking somewhat, underdeveloped in some instances.

We open in the prologue in the Greek Isle with the hero, Alex rescuing Lady Hestia from being sold into slavery by a Turkish Sultan. His nemesis, Sultan Murad had captured Alex years back. Murad kept Alex as a slave, had horrible t

Little did she know the torment and personal hell Alex had lived through and how it had scarred his very soul. 'Addicted to the Duke" by Bronwen Evans is the First book in the New Series "Imperfect Lords". This is the story of Alexander Sylvester Bracken, Duke of Bedford and Lady Hestia Cary.
Hestia was kidnapped with she was 16 years of age and was going to be raped and taking as a slave if not for Alex. The man that was going to hurt Hestia was once his captor..the man got Alex hooded on drugs and went along with allot of what that man used to do as his slave. But no more and he is now there to save He

This one really took some time to really get off the ground. I found the plot weak and a little tedious. Love triangles (kind of), weird plot twists and the most damn inner dialogues I've had to deal with in some time. I don't think I need pertinent background information told to me at 92% of the book. I felt like the author reminded the reader constantly why the characters felt and acted the way they did. Like bare bones to the point of annoyance. It was repetitive and more than a

This book opens with Alex, the Duke of Bedford rescuing Lady Hestia Cary. Hestia has been captured by pirates and is about to be handed over to Sultan Murad Bayezid - the very man who captured and enslaved Alex years before.

Fast forward four years - Alex is a recovering opium addict who uses alcohol and sex to quiet his demons. He has been summoned by Hestia on a matter of urgency and as much as

I really enjoy reading Bronwen Evans.. she's my go to for historical reads when I'm in the mood.. her books are filled with time appropriate issues and outcomes.. when now a days are things we don't give a second thought too and take for granted.. Most of the books I've read by her have action, intrigued, angst and passion.. And I always get sucked in with that one secondary character you just need to know more about.. So this is definitely another series I will continue to pick up..

Bronwen Evans has become one of my all-time favorite authors! The first page of "Addicted to the Duke" grabbed my attention and didn't let go until the end.
Alex, the duke in question, has lived a semi-charmed life with one exception - he was kept as an opium-eating/smoking prisoner for two years. Alex is sexy and charming and loved by the ladies, he uses all of this to hide his still partial addiction to opium. Alex believes his only redeeming act was to rescue Hestia from the clutches of the mo

Mmmm not a good book for me :( I struggled to get into the story and started skim reading from 30%. One of my favourite tropes in romance is the forbidden trope, where the H/h is expected to keep away from the other for whatever reason but they still end up together. The blurb was quite appealing as it had an adventure on the high seas as well as, touched on a few sensitive topics of drug addic
I admit it, I am a historical romance junkie and have been since my middle school days (although, in my days, it was called junior high school). I have enjoyed reading a few of Bronwen Evans other books. This particular book is An Imperfect Lords novel. The writing, as I have come to expect, flows well and keeps the reader involved with the characters. This story is set in the Regency period, in the early 1800's , and deals with opium addiction and the pirates that inhabit and plague the seas a ...more

I've received an eARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.
Review in Portuguese:

When I saw this book’s theme, I thought it might be interesting to see how the author would deal with the addiction to opium and laudanum a few centuries ago. And I must say it was well presented, in the majority of times.

Alex Bracken was captured by a Turkish pirate and was held hostage for two years. He made him an opium addict. When Alex finally escape
Addicted to the Duke by Bronwen Evans is #1 in what promises to be an intriguing new series, "Imperfect Lords". Bronwen Evans continues to write, a brilliantly and masterfully work of romance! Such feelings and emotions shown throughout this powerful and compelling story, are hard to convene to readers. But she managed it, beautifully. Very impressive!

I loved Alex, his desire to survive, his revenge was well deserved, and his feelings of not being worthy was honest, and true feelings. I underst

This storyline is quite different and I really loved it in the beginning and towards the climax of the story but towards the end I got a little bit board - the whole kidnapping was too predictable. Nevertheless it's a wonderful lovestory by Bronwen - another great book! And I really liked the part on opium and laudanum.

Bronwen Evans' writing often deals with the darker subjects in life. Because the writing is so intense I sometimes have to take a break from the book just to 'settle'. This book also deals with darkness -- addiction and forced captivity -- but it isn't as dark as some of her books. During the time period of this book, little was understood about opioid addiction. People freely smoked opium and doctors freely prescribed laudanum for just about any ailment, so it was easy to become addicted. The a ...more

I wonder if the trope of a rapey Turkish sultan will ever disappear. I've stumbled upon it so many times that I can't even count it.

Enter Murad, (we'll call him the rapey Turkish sultan) who likes going after both boys and girls. 🙄 He is unfortunately the main plot device because everything revolves around him.
Alex is the hero who escaped the horrors of this rapey sultan's harem and now he is seeking revenge. The opportunity shows itself in a form of an innocent 16-year-old soon-to-be

As any good story that has pirates should be, ADDICTED TO THE DUKE is a wild ride. Bronwyn Evans kept me captivated from the start with this adventurous tale of Dukes and Lords, Pirates and Sultans, danger and deception, and love and honor that starts in London and sails to the Greek Islands. There were many twists and setbacks as the hero and heroine, Alexander Bracken, the Duke of Bedford and Lady Hestia Cary fought for their lives and for their love... repeatedly. Both characters were strong- ...more

Turbulent seas of love and danger!

A terrible burden sears the soul of Alexander Sylvester Bracken, Duke of Bedford. Driven by guilt and the fear of opium addiction, Alex will sail into danger taking his past and future with him. Death seems sweet but maybe not as sweet as Lady Hestia Cary.
Six years ago Alex rescued Hestia from his deadliest enemy, the Turkish pirate Murad. Hestia fell irrevocably in love with Alex. Alex needed to steer clear of Hestia. He is a danger to both her and himself. No

Addicted to the Duke is an aptly named romance between Alex, the Duke of Bedford and Lady Hestia Cary. Ms Evans was clever in commencing with a foreword regarding opium and also laudanum (a mixture of opium and alcohol) as it gave me an appreciation of the trauma that Alex faced in his past. The novel commences with Alex saving Hestia, from Sultan Murad Bayezid, who had captured and enslaved Alex several years prior. Alex has made the dangerous journey in order to repay Hestia’s father, the Earl ...more

I must admit that I was a bit torn when it came to rating this book. my problem was that it is a book that is really well written and is dealing with some rather difficult topics like abuse, rape and drugs. Not the most romantic stuff, is it? Right, And when people are hurt that way and when they are judged badly for it and when the descriptions are not always easy to read....well, it is not the easiest or most romantic thing to read. Nevertheless, the effect the story and the events described h ...more
So I did not even realise I was still “reading” this novel as I picked it months ago & lost all interest in it shortly afterwards! Needlessly to say this has ended up on my DNF list sadly as I love some of the authors other works!

Addicted to the Duke is about the Lady Hestia Cary, and Alex Bracken, the Duke of Bedford. The story begins with Alex rescuing Hestia from Sultan Murad Bayezid., who had imprisoned Alex four years earlier. The story picks up four years later when Fredrick Cary, Hestia's distant cousin, brings a body home that he claims is Hestia's father. With her father supposedly dead, he will become the Earl of Pembroke. The story recounts their effort to find her father, and keep her safe from Cary.

He was broken and lost his soul. She was everything good. She loved him but he was afraid of the darkness in his soul, to get close to her. Browen Evans treated the subject of addiction with her usual understanding that can be done to a person. The story will hold you enthralled with her handling of the story. The feelings of the characters and the way they act shows that understanding. This had all the elements necessary to make a great book. I could not put the book down once I started it. I ...more

Bronwen is a talented writer, but a well written story can still be beyond belief . I received a free ARC for an honest review. I like her writing, though there is a little more sex than I prefer, I just skip over it when it's more than I can handle. This story involves another rake who drowns his sorrows in excessive womanizing. Isn't that what attracts innocent ingenue? But honestly, I’m not a fan of the manwhore. Toss in some opium use and we have a romance. Our H has experienced imprisonment ...more

This was an entertaining adventure about a woman, Hestia, who has been in love with Alex for the past 4 years, ever since he saved her from Turkish Pirates. Alex has done everything he could, except marry someone else, to push Hestia away, going as far as to let her catch him with another woman in a very compromising way. He does not believe he deserves her due to the fact that he had been held captive by the same Turkish pirate, who kidnapped Hestia, for two years, having to do things he is ash ...more

FINAL DECISION:  A good kickoff to a new series about men who are definitely not your perfect men.  Alex is a man struggling with an addiction and the consequences of his capture and imprisonment and his belief that he is not good enough for Hestia.  I love damaged heroes and Alex is definitely an imperfect one.

THE STORY:  Alexander Sylvester Bracken, Duke of Bedford agrees to help Lady Hestia Cary find her missing father. Alex feels a debt to Hestia's father for helping in Alex's rescue from hi

The only thing better than getting in on the start of a new series is when that series is by one of your favorite authors. Bronwen Evans’ Addicted to the Duke is an exciting, titillating, action filled introduction to her Imperfect Lord series.

Alexander Bracken, Duke of Bedford hid behind his physical image of a handsome, honorable, and wealthy duke, but it was all lies. No one knew his dark depths or sinister vices. At 20, he’d enlisted to fight the Turks, thinking sailing the high seas would

I have loved all of Bronwen Evans books that I've read and this one was good but I think I missed some of the connection between the characters. I would say this is a dark historical romance, second chance at love and addiction. Alexander Sylvester Bracken, the Duke of Bedford was held captive for two years beaten, tortured and controlled by opium. Nearly dead when rescued Alex survived by sheer will and the dream of revenge. Asked to rescue the daughter of his savor Alex is giv

Author Bronwen Evans continues to challenge the reader with her hard-hitting provocative storylines. In Addicted to the Duke she hits on subjects not normally discussed, opium and laudanum addiction as well as others that you will find out by reading the book.

While reading the Prologue I wasn't sure if there would be a way for me to find this book a romance but I love this author so really there was no options for me not to give this book a try. WOW.....this was an impactful read and Alexander's
