Similar in plot to "A little Princess" by Frances Hodgson Burnett, but it's not! Please help! [s]

I'm desperately looking for a book I read about 10 years ago, It's similar to A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett in that it's a little girl in a boarding school whose parents die, but in the book that I'm looking for, the little girl has a cat and must give the cat away, and she becomes a maid and stays a maid in the end, instead of being found by a rich gentleman, as in Burnett's version. Hope this isn't too vague, but I can't remember much more about it.

I'm pretty certain that you're talking about "Molly's Heart." It's actually a modern retelling of A Little Princess and it's part 1 of a trilogy.
