I wonder what the group thinks the brothers mean exactly when they use the term "cup" in their discussion?

I think they mean 'drinking of the cup of life'. In the next chapter Ivan mentions it again and says that he cannot see much point living after the age of 30, in comparison with his father who seems intent on living as long as possible. I remember thinking this kind of thing when I was young. Funny how life beyond 30 suddenly seems to have more point to it, when you actually get there!
Jim, I agree with Rosemary's response here. Ivan talks about how his youth allows him to maintain his vitality, which will likely change when he hits 30. The funny thing is that Ivan also mentions that his father has no idea what his cut off point should be and continues to drink from his cup in his 70s.
As I continue through the book, I think my view has changed from them talking about living itself, to something more akin to living on the Karamazov edge. Almost that sociopathic viewpoint of self pleasure.
