Some of the funniest moments in this series arise from Eve botching up a metaphor (I.e., it's a dog eat cat world). It's normally Roarke or Peabody left to deal with her logic about the new one she's created.

What are some that you remember that should be classics?

There were quite a few in Delusion in Death. One of my favorites was "bite off more than you can swallow" as opposed to "chew." When corrected, Eve promptly responded by saying you eventually had to swallow.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments I LOVE when Eve messes phrases up... haha!

message 5: by Mary (new)

Mary | 208 comments Yeah, they are so funny!Actually, at the begining I was a little confused because English isn't my mother tongue and I had a hard time understanding which phrase she was using exactly, but now I'm familiar with her and have no problem whatsoever.

message 6: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (ezepeze11) | 582 comments Totally reminds me of Ziva in NCIS *Nora Roberts must watch NCIS* just saying. :) my favorite show EVER so I feel I have an obligation to bring it up wherever it seems appropriate!

message 7: by Sara ♥ (last edited Oct 16, 2012 05:23PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments I dunno... I'm thinking the NCIS people must be J.D. Robb fans since the In Death series started first (by 8 years)!

message 8: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (ezepeze11) | 582 comments Touche!!!! Though Ziva didn't come for two years. Still. Nice!

But Eve hasn't always been making those mixed-metaphors. They started pretty recently, right?

message 9: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments I don't know! Anyone else notice when that started?

message 10: by Mary (new)

Mary | 208 comments Well, I'm not sure either, but I have the impression it started pretty early...

message 11: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15066 comments Mod
It started very early. Even Feeney has to correct her but it became into focus when she paired with Peabody. These were the source of many funny moments between the two.

message 12: by Astha (new)

Astha Kapoor (faithfullyyours) I don't remember which book, but Eve said if the arrow was pointing that way, she wanted it in her pocket... (as opposed to quiver). Roarke corrected her.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15066 comments Mod
I remember that one, too, but can't remember the book. I think it might have been fairly recent, at least within the last three books.

message 14: by Wendi (new)

Wendi | 12 comments I love the one where Eve tries to use the Clue game metaphor. I laughed so hard!

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15066 comments Mod
If anyone remembers the book for the Clue game references, let us know. I think it must have been in a book after Fantasy in Death as those are the only ones I haven't re-read.

message 16: by Sara ♥ (last edited Nov 10, 2012 05:02PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments I remember that! I think it might have been Celebrity in Death?? Or Indulgence in Death would make sense...

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15066 comments Mod
Mystery solved?

message 18: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments No, it doesn't make sense with Celebrity. I'm going with Indulgence.

For those of you who have read Calculated in Death, you know how rich the story was with Eve's mixed metaphors. Here are a few:

“If this was a random kill, I'm a monkey's cousin. "

"Alexander wouldn’t have been very pleased. Maybe he took his muscle to the toolshed.”

message 20: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliace) I love her mixed metaphors.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

just finished reading, okay re-reading, Indulgence and that's the one with the Clue references. it also has a large number of "Eve metaphors". one of my favorites bring "following the cookie crumbs" because she would rather pick up enough crumbs for a cookie than bread.

message 22: by Vera (new)

Vera M. | 446 comments Ha! Love the metaphors and it makes them even better when she does the "well THIS makes more sense because ...."

LOL..so funny. I love that Robb writes this stuff in these books. Just another added touch that adds so much to the books.

From Thankless in Death:

Eve: "World’s his clam.”

"Oyster,” Roarke corrected when McNab’s brows drew together in puzzlement.

ROFLMBO!! See??? I just love this stuff. Robb is a genius at writing it. Just slips it in there as smooth as butter and it's so funny. These books should also be classified "Humorous"!!

Dawn | 3250 comments From Concealed

"You know what this makes me want to do? The memory street,"

"Lane, memory lane"

Yay! More, more!

message 28: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 3250 comments I snorted Diet Coke on that one...it is especially funny because I am listening to it, and Susan Ericksen does Roarke's calm correction so well.

message 31: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Yeah, it's always funny she gets them wrong but then she points the inconsistency in the correction...

message 32: by Amy (new)

Amy And I love how Roarke always just gets what she's saying. He may chuckle to himself but he gets her.

message 33: by Karma Queen (new)

Karma Queen (karmaqueen) | 260 comments From Salvation in Death:

"...he was smart enough, but Penny Soto was his athlete's heel."

"Achilles'." Roarke paused. Studied her face. "Do you do that on purpose? The misnomers?"

"Maybe. Sometimes."

message 36: by Dee (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments I have just started Obsession and I love the part about the red herring. I like how she wonders why they call it that. Now that Eve has said that I wonder too.

message 37: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15066 comments Mod
That was hilarious! There were quite a few mixed metaphors in this one.

message 38: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Why are herrings red?

Why is it a Spanish omelet?

Why are they called snake eyes?

Oh, the unsolved mysteries in Eve's brain....

Devoted in Death

Eve: "Cold as a bitch's tit."

Peabody: "It's witch's."

Eve: "Why? Doesn't matter. Neither way makes sense. If somebody's a witch, why do they put up with cold tits? I'm a bitch, and twent-four hours ago, my tits were plenty warm."

Devoted in Death

Eve: "That's one of those oxygons."

Peabody: "Moron."

Eve turned her head, aimed steely eyes. "Repeat that."

Peabody: "I mean oxymoron. It's oxymoron not gon. Sir."

Eve: "Either way."

Peabody: "Moving right along."

Devoted in Death

Eve: "A skeeze, a fuckhead, a dickwad. He's all that and a bag of chips."

Peabody: "Chips. It's a bag of chips."

Eve: "Chips are good. Rice cakes are crap. He doesn't get chips."

Lol, I did think this was a good one and did make perfect sense.

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments I love when Eve botches a metaphor and someone corrects her. Then she explains it and actually it makes a lot of sense. I don't remember Eve doing this in the earlier books. When did the mixed metaphors start?

message 46: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15066 comments Mod
I wish I could remember the first times but I think they go back to when Eve and Peabody became partners. Some of the funniest ones are between the two of them.

message 47: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I don't know... it's one of the things Roarke loves. A lot happen between the two of them.

message 48: by Kay (new)

Kay (kkfar) These all made me laugh! When we begin the reread in January it will be great to see if they showed up at all in the earlier books.

I do too plus a lot more! This new br is going to be the perfect opportunity for recording a lot of things. And seeing/remembering where they first occurred - things like that. I'm so excited to have a good mixture of first time readers with several rereaders taking this journey with us. There's so much to discover as a new reader - it's always fun to see these books again with "new" eyes, with a first time reader. And, having completed the journey twice, I know that the insight that can be offered from rereaders is priceless...plus, it seems I always discover something new, something I missed the previous read, or something I had forgotten about. I'm going into this reread with eyes (& ears) wide open! It's going to be so much fun!
