Felt like reading it again ... it is funny what sticks out for you when you re-read a book. The description of Nataraja for example, I never really paid too much attention to what was said on how he looked. When I thought about it, I always pictured the sultan from Aladdin for some reason....

Arushi | 3652 comments @Claire - i don't like the first book. But overall did the girl not get her own back in the end of it? She was weak throughout the book and the other female leads are not. They're majorly good at kicking ass so if anyone ever told them anything like what the first one was told, the results would not be good. At all.

Give at least one more book a try. The series does get better.

Unfortunatly I have way too much time on my hands. :(

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels, #3) by Ilona Andrews

I love this book....

What I meant as for having too much time was I have too much time in general. :( I even had a doctor's appointment ( 1 hour for my mom to drive from downtown SA to our house, 30 mins to get to the doctor's office, 45 mins - 1 hour for the actual appointment, and then driving home), I still read Magic Strikes in a few hours....
I think if I could I would turn up the speed on my reader and would read/listen even faster. As it is I have it as fast as it can go. :/

btw, setting an appointment for something and having to wait for 2 weeks to go and the reason you are going clears up the night before ... is ... a ... pain ... in ... the ... ass.
thnx wasted time

I especially love the last part of this book ... it has some ass kickery with an added bit of omg squeeness to it. nomnom

Was thinking about reading Cal Leandros series, but my library is missing books in the series and I get twitchy about that sort of thing. I put off reading the Jaz Parks series for months beyond 1 and 2 because I was missing 3 and 4 but had every other book/story in the series.

Nightlife
Moonshine
Madhouse
missing--Deathwish
Roadkill
missing--Blackout
Doubletake

I am getting twitchy thinking about it ... should I even bother with the first 3 books in the series?

Or just keep up with my re-reading of series ... march is a good month for new rleases for some series I keep track of.

Wish I had a million dollars sometimes....

Does your library not have it, or does the whole system not have it? Depending on where you live, libraries can give books out to other neighboring libraries. I would ask the librarians if any of the other libraries carry it and if they could transfer the books. :)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, #5) by Ilona Andrews

I almost forgot how awesome Curran and Kate were….

@ Zeenat:
The libraries I get my books from are for the visually impaired/blind. There is bookshare.org which is now free I guess and the NLS which is an offshoot of the library of congress and is totally audio/talking books and have a limited selection. They have their own readers and sometimes publishers donate commercial audio books to convert them. Both are online libraries so I don’t have to go anywhere.
The way BS adds books is dumb sometimes I think … they get their books mainly from donations and volunteers scan them in and then they are converted to daisy format (which can be totally text or audio books too—they both can let a person navigate them via headings and other stuff). It is alphabetical from what I can tell from haunting the wishlist/being scanned list and sometimes makes no sense. One book has been on the books being scanned list for several months, one book I had sent in for the wishlist never went to the being scanned list and went straight through to being available. So who knows, I just keep a list and check it every once in a while and re-submit my wishlist items after a few months if they don’t show up eventually. The two books I had been wanting to read in the Jaz Parks series took several months and I submitted them twice. When they went up book 4 went up first then 3—4’s title was ahead of 3’s alphabetically for instance.

I really have not checked local libraries to see if they offer books in a format that I can read.
1. I would want to check out a ton of books like I used to do.
2. I hate having to rely on anyone for transportation so I would be hesitant to look and see if I could.

If I don’t check I wont wonder--stupid I know.

Hi, where is Deathwish?

Some of the books have been on the list for as long as I can remember.
Like:
Bichon Frise Cunliffe Juliette
I list that one because till I stopped to key over and see how it was spelled I thought it had said “bitchin’ fries” for the longest time—silly screen reader.
They had the first few books of Aly Berkstrom for forever it seems so I did not start them—I just noticed the rest were on the books being scanned list.

I talk too much.

The plot is really good, and the characters are enjoyable, but I really hate the author's writing style. And the books don't get really good until the last third. Anywho.. don't go into it with any expectations Jax. Its a good book... but very realistic in a way.

Jax | 831 comments @ Arushi... LOL - I won't.

My hubby has been nagging me to finish the series for months now! But because of the (I'll be generous) 4 years between Brisingr and Inheritance, I've been umming & Aahing over possibly re-reading from Eragon.
Still considering it as a possibility... But first I'll see how I feel about Inheritance before re-starting the entire series! :)

message 1770: by Arushi (last edited Feb 21, 2013 01:19AM) (new)

Arushi | 3652 comments For god's sake you'll never get done if you re-read. *waves arms frantically* Have you seen the size of those damned books? I own three of them in Hardback! They're like consecutively larger bricks.

Plus inheritance has a slow buildup. so You'll get most of the bg info you need in it. Was it only four years tho? Felt longer. Hummm.

message 1771: by Jax (new)

Jax | 831 comments LOL - I know what you mean! But Technically Brisingr was released in 2008 and Inheritance was at the end of 2011, beginning 2012... sooooo you could even claim only 3.5 years!

Also - Yes... I LOVE my tomes!! But they do get kinda heavy! LOL (added benefit of eReaders!!)

Barring my Urban Fantasy books (which apparently have a limited page count set by those nasty publishers) most of my authors write fabulously LARGE novels! ;D

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments Done with House Rules (Chicagoland Vampires, #7) by Chloe Neill which was majorly improved from the previous book. I'm a bit ashamed to say that I loved Captured (The Captive, #1) by Erica Stevens and Renegade (The Captive, #2) by Erica Stevens . I know the style is rigid and there is not much character development in it but it's so Beauty & the Beast/Romeo & Juliet style that I can't help myself.

Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments Llaph, there are a few novella that deal with the secondary characters. Have you read them?

Can't recall them at the moment but
Roman: Dark and Stormy Knights (0.5 A Questionable Client)
Barabas, and Ascanio appear a lot more in her spin-off series.

message 1775: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Thanks for the reminders. I know of them, but have only been able to read a couple. I knew what story was in Dark and Stormy Nights, I just did not think Roman was one of the Slavic priests (not even attempting that sp) in it. I did not get to read the story in Must Love Hellhounds till recently and when I re-read the series and could add it to the line somethings made more sense.
I have read the summaries for the short stories and pet my OCD into submission by telling it that it will be okay and they are not a main part of the story and nothing bad will happen if I do not read them.
Does not keep me from wanting to read them though … I will hopefully find a shiny to take my mind off of them till I can get a hold of them.
I did not look it up, but is IA going to make a book of all of the short stories like SK did for her DH series? I totally forgot about that and it came out last year.
See, Shinies?

I cannot remember why I stopped reading this series past book 1. I think it was because my library only had up to book 3 and just recently 4 and 5 were added and the rest are listed on the books being scanned list so that my library should have them available sometime this year….

To talk about different I read Beat the Reaper (Peter Brown #1) by Josh Bazell. It is not pnr or uf, I thinki it is under suspense thriller or something. I think I found someone more cynical and pessimistic than me. He drops the f-bomb a lot, but I really liked this book for some reason. No matter how gritty and f’d up it was.

The Jesse James Dawson books are quite good. Plus, there's no romance mucking up the plot as the main character has already been married for years. You get to see him with his wife, but it's not serious romance stuff.

I'll definitely be continuing Weather Warden and Riley Jensen. I already bought the second Riley Jensen book and books 2-4 of Weather Warden.

The local public libraries have audio books and in my area at least they have online holds and checkouts and downloadable audio books through Overdrive. Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ | 1164 comments Same here, I've had the Allie Beckstrom series on my TBR pile for some time. Damn, too many shiny covers!

Done with Spell of the Highlander and the Highlander series. The Fever series is already done but I'm not sure I want to jump into Iced right now. I seem to remember someone on GR counting the number of swear words in the book and the amount was alarming.

message 1795: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I don't really recall swear words in that book, but I sometimes phase stuff out when I read if I don't want to hear it. I tend to pay attention if it is the f word though. I don't think 'feck' is technically a swear word in the US though and that is the word I remember hearing a lot.

If you don't want to read a book with a ton of swear words don't touch Beat the Reper I think he used the f word in many tenses and modifiers in that book.
Swearing does not really bother me, guess I am good at ignoring stuff I don't want to hear.

Random funny fact about me:
I sensor myself while I am thinking. I would think "this is f***'n stupid' then say, in my head mind you, 'I mean this is freak'n stupid'
This works for damn, darn; god, gosh; and shit, crap.

I also sometimes say 'excuse me' when I burp ... when I am alone and no one is near-by.

The characters are meh to me, some are interesting and seem to grow as the series goes along and others don't go anywhere and seem to be just 2-D and are place holders or something. The books endings are annoying to me ... I have caught myself getting to the last bit and expecting another chapter ... nope end of the book read the next one! H8 cliffhangers …
I guess that there are politic-like thingees in them, trying to figure out who is on what side and what they are going to do. It seems sometimes predictable and wtf worthy to me though. I can’t explain it, I just am not impressed by them.

LOL, I do that too! I think it's been ingrained in me by my mother and I can't not do it.

I frequently mutter to myself, like if I make a mistake when typing or something like that, I'm always calling myself an idiot.

Dale, I know what you mean about no time for rereads. There are mainly two types of books for me: ones that are just fun reads but kinda forgettable (which is most of them), then there are fab books that you love and become instant classics to you. I will reread the second kind. Once in a while I take a notion to reread one of the first kind, but it's not usual. And I don't mean to downplay the first kind of books. They could be very enjoyable reads, but they just don't quite hit the spot and have that elusive 'something' that makes you want to read them again.

I have a friend who says she would never reread books. It's not from a lack of time. She says that she knows what happens, so what's the point? This is utterly bizarre to me! Same friend will happily rewatch a movie. Dammit, people need to be consistent!! :D

Hahaha

I like re-reading, especially after I have just read all the books available in a series and there is nothing more there... until the next ones comes out. I end up reading my favorite parts so many times...
I usually find it really hard to re-watch movies unless I absolutely loved them. Same thing with TV shows.
But lately I have barely had anytime to even read!!! I really want to re-read Kate Daniels :(
