Once again thanks guys :). Now it's 2 a.m. so I think it's high time for me to log out and try to go to sleep (not holding my breath for that one - troubles with falling asleep ;/ but at least I can try). Maybe I can mange to fall asleep before 4 a.m. (it would be first time in 3 or 4 months) so wish me luck and good night everybody :)

@ Gin:I have my screen reader at 65%, which is kind of fast. I can't stand it to be slower, makes me type slow and I get impatient ...
@ Margo:
I second what Claire said in regards to Highlander series. I always start with #3 because I love Adam and this has more of him in it. (Book 1 does not count because I really dislike that book.)
Also! Ambien ... Sleepytime tea (cammomile etc), and do some exercising before bed. I tend to have insomnia sometimes and those help me out.
Finished
. Better than I expected. I knew who the bad guys were, but I hadn't expected that level of crazy. Or the way things could change so much for Lucas.Starting
I just started
I'd read some not-so-good reviews for it.. so I dunno what I was expecting.. but its turning out better than those expectations :)
@ LlaphI tried everything - herbs, exercise, milk, wine, some herbal tablets I even went to doctor and he prescribed some pills but I was only able to take two. After the firs one I had "visions" and woke up with a huge headache and after the second one I woke up 36 hours later :/ so I decided NO for the pills. :(
I remember having sleep issues. Those were not good times. Seriously not good. I dunno what really works for me, as I still have nights where I just cannot sleep. But I know I need to be warm. That one at least is consistent so my comforter is there even during summer.
Yeah it's not fun at all especially if you finally fall asleep at, let's say, 4 a.m. and you have to wake up to work at 6.30 a.m. :/. I don't have a sleeping problem so much 'cause when I fall asleep I can sleep for 8 to 12 hours the problem is falling asleep :/ that is a torture for me.
I haven't slept more than three hours a night in years - and that's not all in one chunk. Falling asleep is impossible, and once I finally get to sleep, staying that way is impossible. I guess that some people sleep, and some don't. I tried pills and other "home remedies" but they don't work.
Pills were the worst; doctor gave me Ambien. It turns out that I took one, went to bed, and the next day the wife said that if I ever sat in that chair and talked trash to her all night like I did last night, my ass would be out the door! So much for Ambien and sleeping - guess I just blacked out for the evening.
Anyway, the worst thing about lack of sleep is the dark circles around the eyes!

Luckily, my glasses hide the worst of it - without them I can't see two feet in front of me, so I always have them on. I understand there is some process where they bleach the dark circles out because once you have them they never go away on their own.
I can fall a sleep anytime and anywhere. It's staying asleep that gets to me. I've fallen a sleep in and elevator standing up. In a dentists chair. and getting my hair done lolIt might have had something to do with working graveyard shift though. Retired now, but if I wake up during the night I have a really hard time going back to sleep.
@ Margo:That stinks; I used to have worse trouble sleeping and just dealt with it. Now I can take ambien but only do a few times a month. I depend more on xanax, reciting the alphabet, counting, multiplication tables, or other repetitive stuff if I cannot sleep. My problem is my brain will not STFU. Doing that stuff is harder than it sounds …
I can’t explain it, but I get hallucinations while on it also, I know the blind girl seeing stuff sounds yeah rightish and all. People are lucky I can’t drive anymore and I stay in my room and listen to parts of books that I don’t remember reading the next day and have to re-read them. If I don’t make the effort to try and sleep I will out last the sleeping pill, like force myself to stay awake.
I can sleep now, but no matter what time, how I get there, or what is around me I only sleep for 6 hours for the most part. Weekends are the only time I might sleep past 6 hours.
WOW. I know that it will sound stupid but it's good to know that I'm not the only one who has problem with sleeping.
Okay so I finished with the 1st Highlander book and just like you all said - nothing special but I will give it another try with book #3 like you said but first I'm going to read 2 of the newest Connie Suttle's books Demon's King and then Destroyer :)
Arushi wrote: "@Jax - Prince of Thorns!!! Prince of Thorns!!"Thanks! Will look into finding it!
Will probably only be next year...
Barring any catastrophe's... though, my hubby's pretty geared up for a Zombie Apocolypse! LOL There seem to be a number of "people" already on his hit list...;P
I read
, so going to go on to try
I'm trying to stick to reading books I already actually have at the moment... both hardcopy and ebooks... that way I can start my new year with a relatively fresh (and slightly reduced) online wishlist! LOL
Margo wrote: "WOW. I know that it will sound stupid but it's good to know that I'm not the only one who has problem with sleeping."Definitely not alone! ;D
Granted, my issue is more, I seem to be in reverse... I want to sleep during the day... but as soon as the sun sets, I'm wide awake!
And reciting the alphabet, or counting (anything)do nothing for me either... I can keep on reciting on "one side" while my brain conjures up pretty pictures to match on the other... and Counting sheep! Oh BOY! You'd swear I was tripping if you could actually see what my head managed with that! LOL
My Doc doesn't seem to know what the issue is either...
Like you, I've tried everything... And as the song says "The drugs don't work"... :|
In winter though, I've discovered, that as long as I don't over-use it, porridge puts me right to sleep...
(Good Thing I like eating! LOL) But having to go make porridge AFTER having cooked supper... really not fun...
Good Thing My kids are used to "zombie mom"... I get to catch up on my sleep on weekends, when dad's home to ensure they don't destroy the house...
well I do not count or say the alphabet actually I invent a story. I have 3 right now - romance between an au pair and a mafia boss, something like Highlander or more like The Golden Dynasty when the woman from 21st century travels to unknown word during her sleep in woods with "guardians", gods and shifters, and the last story is also fantasy about a girl without a memory who was found 5 years ago and lived in a shifters community not knowing who or what she is :).So while I plan another scene from those stories somewhere along the line I fall asleep but it usually is somewhere between 4 and 5 a.m.
With the counting and reciting ... like I had said it s harder than it sounds. Another thing I can count and stuff on one side while thinking of something else too. That is one of the things I do when listening to a book sometimes, it is frustrating.I don't really make up my own stories, I try to think of something that does not make me think too hard. I have inserted myself into stories though, embarrassing is when I look back to when I was younger and the dumb things I made up lol.
I just finished my 10th book this month, titled
Blood Trail (Victoria Nelson, #2) by Tanya Huff. My next book is
Religion, Myth, and Magic: The Anthropology of Religion (The Modern Scholar)by Susan A. Johnston
Just finished the bigtime series, I loved it. The best PNR ever--probably cause it's not like normal PNRs. LOLMore than halfway done with
woo hoo!!Also, starting
. it better be as good as everyone says it is :P lol
Okay How the hell you people can read Anna Karenina is beyond me :/. I have it on my shelf since I was born and tried like a 1000 times to read it and just couldn't. Do you have some other version then Leo Tolstoy?
Margo wrote: "Do you have some other version then Leo Tolstoy? "LOL, is Zeenat in fact reading 'Anna Karenina: Vampire Seductress'? Cos that sounds kinda fun actually!
Well, there is a book called Sissi, Die Vampirjägerin: Scheusalsjahre einer Kaiserin (Sissi, Vampire Hunter) so I wouldn't be surprised if a vampire book about Anna Karenina existed as well. I think a lot of famous people/characters get turned into van Hellsings. LOL

I thin..."That cover is kinda awesome! Crossbows and ballgowns go together so well! :D
@ Zeenat:The first book was meh to me ... it got a lot better as I went along. I finished Cold Days the other day and loved it. Harry goes from a bumbling, geeky wizard who gets lucky a lot of the times to a bad ass still geeky wizard who still gets lucky and fumbles a lot less.
The humor evolves too, still funny but less un serious.
Famous people as vampire hunters ... I like the ones making Elizabeth I one, and didn't they make a movie about the one were Lincoln was one also?
Makes no sense to me ... these people were busy WTF!
What is the link to the big time series? I want to see if I can get it ... I am running out of things to read besides re-reads. I actually started Working for the Devil last night. :?
It's taking me forever to get through anna karenina--i'm only halfway there and I think I'm going on two months reading it. LOL it's not that it's bad, I quite like the storyline. It's just really hard to read, especially with all the names!Llaph--http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11...
Working for the Devil (Dante Valentine, #1) by Lilith Saintcrow I really h8 learning new programs ...
@ Claire:I have read the series a couple of times, this will make the third I think. It has been a really long time since I have read it, my opinions changed some ... still think Dante is dumb and I have NFI why people put up with her.
Jace's story still makes me :(
Zeenat wrote: "Jace was the only good part of the whole series and.... boooooo"Totally agree. The books started good and then they were getting worse and worse. And the last book and ending was just stupid :/
I didn't even finish the first one, I disliked it so much. I actually had to check and make sure it was the first book in the series, because it felt like I was really missing something. I found it very underwhelming.
I started the second book ... but I don't think I will finish it and might go to something else. I am glad I am not alone in thinking Jace was a good character. The irrational uncompromising issues are bleh ... talk about cutting your nose off despite your face.Spending the time on a background of a character and then having them die so soon in the series is stupid. Also, all of the “sparking, twitching, and sweating” that happened in the book … wouldn’t that be distracting? Oh and the auras, guess you would have to be there to get it. I liked it and I didn’t.
kk, decided now I will not read the rest.
O. EM. GEE. I am going to series. It was not what I thought it would be, which was why I hesitated. But I loved
. I should just trust you guys more often. ;)I'm gonna breeze through this series and thankfully, that will help me meet my book goal ROFL. reading
@ Zeenat:Fair warning, the books get longer as you go along. I am not complaining, but just so you know! They started at like 8 or so hours and the last DTB I listened to was Ghost Story and it was like 17 hours. Cold Days was 500 something pages I think.
IMO well worth it.
I think my total reading time for this one was only a few hours, 5 tops LOL. Another reason why I don't listen to audiobooks.
Oh that was just the est time for the book that was listed on the site, I only take a part of that time to listen to a book. I think the 1 st book was only a few hours. I can set my reader to read realllly fast.~100 pages per 1 hr for me most of the time. Doesn't mean I absorb it totally, but still.
Zeenat I'm listening to
too. I have some issues I'll put on the general book threadLaph I enjoyed the first Dante book but hated the second. The third was marginal. That's as far as I got
@ Gin:Reading the first book reminded me of things I did and did not like about the series. Then I am reminded of how I did not know many authors and did not have a huge selection of stuff to read to choose from.
So glad I found other books to read. It is one of those things that make you grateful you went through it.
Learning experience ...
I read fairly quickly but some books really fast. It's funny what affects that. Like a book that is sucking I speed read to get through or past boring parts. Soometimes eh books make me read slow because I can't get into it. Then on really good books I sometimes read really fast because I'm so into it, and sometimes I slow down because I want to savor it. I don't really like audio because it's harder to go at my own pace and like Zeenat I'm more a visual learner. But the audio is often to slow especially when it's a slow part and I would go more quickly. Then sometimes I want to stop and think about a plot point and that's easier to control with a visual book.
Claire wrote: "Margo wrote: "Thanks, so do I have to read fever to know some of the characters and is it connected with Highlander action or is it totally separated?"Because the Highlander books came first, you..."
I liked the Highlander books at first but then they got boring. I prefered Fever. It's just the thing for me with PNR series. A lot of them start to sound like the same book you read last time. I can only take it in small doses. And I always seem to drop PNR series. Of the highlander books, I think it was the third or fourth that I really liked. Moning did a good job with the first time travel one. It addressed viable theories.

My kids and hubby have wrecked my sleep but I've always had a really hard time waking up even with lots of sleep. Sometimes I've had trouble falling asleep, sometimes pass right out but always hard to wake up and get tired during the day. Usually can stay up late no problem. But yeah I have 3 kids and I'm so used to someone disrupting my sleep. If not a kid my hubby wakes me up feeling amorous when I actually fall asleep early and he is going to bed at midnight. Then I can't fall asleep for hours. Now that my kids are 5-10 years old and not waking me up my husband does at times or I find that I wake on my own after 3 or 4 hours feeling wide awake because apparently my body is so used to those hours.
