I remember that it was the first book in a series. There were 3 possible gifts in that world. Two were denoted by trees, as the sisters had, and the other was a woman who gave everyone luck. She traveled around and was helped by everyone because if you were nice to her, good luck came to you. The catch was that nothing good ever happened to the woman herself.

Truth Teller's Tale by Sharon Shinn, part of a suits of three. I love those books. I wish she would write more about that world.
