Perhaps a book from Sheri S. Tepper's True Game trilogy? There's an omnibus volume of all three novels:

Nope, none of those....The children meet up in a game room/lounge of some sort. The games are all done on a computer simulation screen, where two children challenge one another and then select the game that they will challenge in....

It is similar to Ender's Game and is about some young children that are gifted and get selected to go to a training academy of some sort. They start out playing strategy games against each other that are simple, like checkers. They get more complex like Chess and Go. Their rankings change based on how well they do in these head to head match ups. One boy quickly becomes the best and starts to command groups in simulated games.
