Task 16-20 planning and points
Here are tasks 16-20!
Reading starts on 1 May 2013!
16) Read a book about an alternate history of Earth
17) Read a book in which the main character travels a lot.
18) Read a book in which at least one of the main characters is gay.
19) Read a book in which the main character belongs to a tight (family) unit like a clan/hive/commune etc.
20) Read any book in a series that has a spin off series. Only the book in the original series counts, not the spin off series.
If you have doubts if a book will count, just ask in this thread.
The books of the series itself will only count for bonuspoints and can not be used for the tasks.
This thread is for planning your challenge and updating your points. Please post your progress in a new message stating the book you've read and the task you read it for and not just in your planning.
Reading for these 5 tasks will start on 1 May 2013 and the final day of reading will be on 30 June 2013. If you are more than halfway in a book you may finish it. However when this thread is closed you will be too late and the book will not count.
This thread will be closed again on 4 July 2013.
Tasks 21-25 will be announced on 24 June 2013 and that thread will be opened on that day.
Happy reading and good luck!

Progress: 3/5
In task 4 I put the word family in brackets so it doesn't have to be a family but something that functions similar to a family.

And, argh! I just read an alternate history novel!
Also, recommendations for series with spin-offs, anyone?
Yay, new tasks... Planning commences...
0/5 (15/25 & 5/5)
16) Alternate Earth Kushiel's Dart
17) Travels a lot Epic
18) Gay Cut & Run
19) Family type unit The Kiss
20) Spin off Children of the Mind (Shadow Saga is spin off of Ender's Saga series)
0/5 (15/25 & 5/5)
16) Alternate Earth Kushiel's Dart
17) Travels a lot Epic
18) Gay Cut & Run
19) Family type unit The Kiss
20) Spin off Children of the Mind (Shadow Saga is spin off of Ender's Saga series)

Does a normal family count? Assuming they're close-knit and the family is important to the character, plot.

I am so sorry. I don't think the task are getting harder, but maybe that is just me.
Fortunately there are lots and lots of alternate history books out there. Just to give an idea the books by Jacqueline Carey that I nominated for the Deserted Island challenge count for that one. So if you read that you will be able to use it in number of challenges.
What are you in the mood for concerning the spinn-offs?

They have to stand apart from the rest of the world in some way. So for example a family that lives way out in the forest or something would count. Or a family that keeps to themselves for some reason. What book are you thinking off?

It's easy to find alternate history books, I was just annoyed that I'd missed out on the chance to use the one I'd just read. If Kushiel's Dart fits then it'd be an excellent option.
The spin-off task: sci fi, fantasy or crime. But not epic fantasy or hard sci fi.
What about Fyre for Task 19 (family type unit)? The main character is a wizard in training and lives in the wizard tower with many of the other wizards.
@ Lauren: From what I read I don't think The Bone Dragon will count. Sorry. The task was based on the books in which the vampires live in hives and the werewolves in packs and also partly on the Scottisch Clans. So think about those lines.
I know. It can be a pian in the you know what when a challenge comes up and you just finished a book you could have used. I too have a frustrating "problem", but with me it is the other way around. I just realised that the two books I want to read right now are two books that have to wait till next week because I can use them in a challenge.
I will do some research on the spin off task. I am not too sure what I am going to read for that one.
@Varla Fiona: Will the wizard live in that tower his entire live or just during his education? Because if it is the latter than it is just a school and not the tight unit that the task is asking for.

Great, I hate having to wait finishing a book because I can use it for a challenge.
How do you like that series?
How do you like that series?
I love Septimus!! I have a fascination for dragons and his is super cute. It is definitely aimed at kids, but I enjoy kids books at times and it makes for easy light hearted reading.

Trust me, it's not your imagination, Barbara is being extremely creative in her approach to this challenge. She lured us in with the first 5 tasks which in retrospect were a breeze and is now finding progressively more fiendish tasks for each round...

Ok, I need help. I'm going to list some of the books that are now spread around my bedroom floor and ask if anybody can point me towards a task for some of them:
Room - I assume I can use it for task 19?
A Discovery of Witches or The Shadow of the Wind or The Night Circus or Gone Girl?
I have two books on the Big Bang theory and all the physics of the actual world in my TBR pile, but alternate ones???

@Varla Fiona: I don't mind that it is aimed at children I just read another installment of the Goddess Girls which is aimed at 8-12 year old little girls and 2 books in the Heroes in Training series which is aimed at boys of 6-9 years old. And I can't wait till the next ones are released. :) I will check it out.
@Carolien: LOL! I thought you guys were tough enough to handle it, but maybe you're not the experienced readers I imagined you to be. :P
I really based all the tasks on the 5 books in the series and can tell you were each fits in so don't blame me, but blame Gail Carriger for writing the books the way she did. At least there isn't a task about ladybugs. :) Or is there?????
No Room is not a book you can use for task 19. The Night Circus is. The people in the circus can be considered a tight (family) unit. Not too sure if and how you can fit the other ones in.
Are you struggling with what is meant by an alternate history of Earth book? Or do you just not have any books that you can read? If the first than look at the wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternat... if the latter let us know and we will be able to suplly you with plenty ideas. :)

I mentioned that they are aimed at kids, as I know that puts some people off. If I like them, I'm sure there are other adults who do as well. Those two series look awesome, especially the heroes in training ones. I will look out your them. Thanks for the tip!

It's more in the finding a book category - utter disbelief that in the piles of books around I cannot find something obviously suitable. It's ok, I was planning on reading a book by Robert Harris as a reading goal this year, so if I read a different one to the one orignally planned I'll be fine.
Some of you are planning to read a book that has time travel in it for the travel task and we had a discussion about this in the task 11-15 thread and also in the task 6-10 thread (I think). It is true I never said what kind of travel, although since the tasks are based on the PPS and there is no time travel in that series but the main character goes to a lot of different placves normal travel is sort of implied. But in the task time travel isn't excluded. However.... In a previous round we already had a lengthy discussion about the word travel and it's implications. And since the word itself implies something that takes some time all kinds of instantaneous kind of portals and travel methods were disallowed. So if you think of using time travel, it (the jump or whatever you want to call it) should take some time.
6) Read a book about an alternate history of Earth- The 5th Wave (The Fifth Wave, #1)
17) Read a book in which the main character travels a lot.- Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1)
18) Read a book in which at least one of the main characters is gay.- The Unidentified Redhead
19) Read a book in which the main character belongs to a tight (family) unit like a clan/hive/commune etc. -The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (Highland Pleasures, #1)

Well I've booked my place but considering how little I have been reading lately I am not overly optimistic :(

I was wondering where you went. Everything ok? Are you just have a reading slump or is life very busy?
You have 2 months so 5 books should be something you can manage.

Would this be suitable for the task?

It's potentially interesting, but poorly structured and very short-sighted in terms of worldbuilding, character behaviour, etc.

I don't know if alternate history can be set in the future, unless perhaps it's a future extrapolated from major historical changes eg. if the Nazis had prevailed in WW2 or if Queen Victoria became a vampire and never died (which happens in God Save the Queen by Kate Locke).
Sorry I have been absent so long. I have been working odd hours and still have to get used to them.
@ Jennifer: what Lauren S said is right. Keep looking there are lots of books out there you could read.
