How do you do that? I'm still in the first book of my list. I had to finish the previous Mishmash.

Congrats!

Besides being a fast reader, I have no husband/significant other or children who need my attention, just my fur kids!

Trust me, that helps. My husband has to proofread a book this weekend with lots of numbers, so I am looking after the kids most of the time.

Having said that:

Completed Fatherland for task 16.

Can anyone tell me if this would work?
17) Read a book in which the main character travels a lot. The Shining Girls

Lauren Smith Lu (Sugar & Snark) wrote: "Can anyone tell me if this would work?

No it won't. Most of us had actually planned to use that book, but Barbara reminded us that the travel can't be instantaneous or very quick. There must be a journey that takes time.

Does a bisexual character count for the gay character task?

message 62: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I would like to say yes, but the characters on which the task is based are gay not bisexual so I have to say no. Sorry.

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I finished task 17 : Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein
The main character is a ferry pilot - she delivers planes and people to various destinations during WWII.

Total 1/5

I didn't think I'd even finish one task! I've been reading so little lately. At least 1 is better than none.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Well everyone has still one week to go. I hope you all get to complete at least one more book and if not, well there is always the catch up period and try to find your books before then.

@Lauren: if it helps it can also be a character that plays a very big part and is present all the time but is not necessarily the main character of the book.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I finished task 16.

I am sorry. Just posted the last 5. I hope you find them a bit easier. At least you have now 2 months to look for any books for tasks you have not yet completed. :D

No worries exams also contributed :( Next month month things should be semi normal again :)

message 78: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Barbara wrote: "@Lauren: if it helps it can also be a character that plays a very big part and is present all the time but is not necessarily the main character of the book. ."

Unfortunately the other major characters are hetero, also bi, or don't have their sexuality mentioned (yet). The main character actually hasn't slept with any men in this book, but I know from previous books in the series that she does, so she's not gay. There was another book I read that had two gay characters, but they were only present for one part of the story.

Another annoying thing (to me) is that these two books and the first one I asked about ALL count for the travel task (feels like a waste somehow) and could have been used for some of next month's tasks. Argh!

You are so going to hate me Jennifer, but I only saw this now when I was doing an update to post everyones new ranks. 1984 is not an alternate history but a dystopian science fiction novel. So it can't be used for task 16. I am so sorry!

Carolien, Lauren F. and Lauren S. have obtained a new rank:

dewan

Varla Fiona, Barbara and Liezel have obtained a new rank:

Potentate

Updated!

message 89: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jevine) | 937 comments Barbara, can I disagree with you? Yes it is probably a dystopia novel, but if you look on the following lists on Goodreads for Alternate History - Best Alternate history novels and stories (http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/30...) and Best Alternate History (http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/46...), it is on both those lists, so.

I think it can be classified as an alternate history. It was written after the end of World War 2 and gives an idea of what could have happened if the socialist / communist regimes won the war and took control of society. I am glad that this did not happen.

My understanding of Alternate history is provide us with a "What if.." type of picture, in other words, what could have happened which would then have changed the current thinking or way of life.

My view, but if I have to, then I suppose I will need to find a new book :(

message 90: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I have done an extensive search and 1984 is always categorized by literary people as a dystopian novel never as an alternate history. It is named as one of the books that is most often put in the wrong category and people think it is an AH but it just isn't. So it doesn't count. I am sorry.

message 91: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments 19) Read a book in which the main character belongs to a tight (family) unit like a clan/hive/commune etc.

I read Cinnamon and Gunpowder by Eli Brown which is set entirely on a pirate ship. Our main character is a captive at first, but throughout the novel grows closer to the crew until he is very much a part of their little sea family, risking his life for them and no longer a captive, but a true member.

Can I use it for task 18?

message 92: by Barbara (last edited Sep 04, 2013 11:21PM) (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Yes as long as it is task 19 you're talking about. You mention two tasks in your question. :)
Pirates are by nature a tight community. And since your main character becomes a member of the pirates it will count.

In this book Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1) by Beth Revis the characters are on a ship of about 2.5k people. They have been on this ship for a few hundred years. Would this count as a tight (family) unit like a clan/hive/commune etc?
