What are you reading in October 2012?

Just finished The Mad Ship, and i am currently reading Deadlocked :D

I read 'The Edinburgh Dead' by Brian Ruckley last month - perhaps should have saved it for October, with its high levels of atmospheric chills. It is a great book that I would recommend. Am reading Mazarkis William's 'The Emperor's Knife' at the moment. Very well written - excellent balance between plot and character, in a faux Arabian Nights setting.
I see a lot of people have recommended Neil Gaiman's 'Graveyard Book' as a November read, and I would echo that. It is charming.

Just finished Deryni Rising, which holds up quite well, and decided to move away from Ballantine Adult Fantasy for a while -- instead, I'm starting A Pehov Duet by Alexey Pehov (a Russian author), a free (and brief) short story collection that ties into his series beginning with Shadow Prowler.

Just finished Новый Дозор- New Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko - and he`s done it again. Amazing urban fantasy - shame, that, as author said, this is going to be the last of the Watch series. On with Heroes Die by Matthew Stover - brutal and brilliant!

Finished Knife of Dreams and with it the re-read part of the Wheel of Time. I started The Gathering Storm this morning. It's the first Sanderson book I've read too, so it'll be interesting!

I've been reading some Swedish UF by Nene Ormes inbetween the WOT books. First Udda Verklighet and now Särskild, both surprisingly good. I'm not exactly spoiled for good Swedish fantasy. Once I wrap up Särskild I think I'll finally get around to Libriomancer. Better late than never?

Ah! I didn't realize there was going to be a new one. Is this the fifth? I'll have to pick it up when it (I hope) comes out in English.

Fifth Watch, yes. And he is quite good in writing space operas and cyberpunk - in fact his Лабиринт отражений. Фальшивые зеркала. Прозрачные витражи are the only cyberpunk novels I can swallow :D

Finished Shadow Prowler, which was fun, and moved on to Shadow Chaser, the second in Alexey Pehov's written-in-Russian-translated-into-English trilogy.

I just finished The Emperor's Soul. I really enjoyed the book. The magic system is really interesting and though I liked it, there was something about it that almost stretched into disbelief for me. It never tipped over into that place where you just give up on a book, but it was in that uncomfortable zone, you know the one where your best friend wants to borrow $1,000. :) You want to do it, you really do, but it's just too far for you to stretch.

I'm all over the place this month. Read the Libriomancer along with the group. Read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Now I'm about half way through the Drawing of the Three (Dark Tower II). Just catching up on books I never had time to read, but always knew I would.

Pedro, we're reading this in the sister group. They are on book 7 I think. I'm on book 5.

At least it will be less complicated, and take less time than reading all ten volumes in Malazan Book of the Fallen one after another.

nahh I agree Malazan is much more complicated to wrap your head around, but WOT certainly takes longer to read through in one go, just based on number and thickness of the books involved.

I've been re-reading WOT since May, and I'm on book 12 now. Admittedly I've read non-WOT books in parallel or else I would've gone mad, but the sheer number of pages means it's difficult to get through more than a book per week if you have fulltime employment and some kind of social life, even if you read nothing else. Books 8-11 are a bit shorter, but they're also slower/less interesting to read.

OTOH if you have a long commute or more spare time, it's probably doable. Also, the ebook won't be released until April, so if you don't want a hardcover you have plenty of time to finish.

Honestly, I'm having a hard time on the first book coz for me, building (or imagining) a new and different world in my head drags me slow; and I'm not used to reading mass market paperbacks. I haven't even finished the first chapter. So i keep putting it off and continue reading Alloy of Law which I'm more familiar with coz I've read the Mistborn Trilogy. But I'll power through it, hopefully.

The Eye of the World isn't the best WOT book by far, so I'd try to get through book 2 at least to see if you like it or not. :) The first book is a little too generic quest-y high fantasy.

I'm at Chapter 4 and it kinda feels like the first scenes from LoTR. Though I'm hooked now!

I didn't continue after Book one. I didn't like the characters who seemed stupid and immature, and the story/world didn't intrigue me at all. Seemed rather tired.

I must admit I wasn't too hyped about it by the end of book 1 either, which didn't get much better for the first half of the second. Once I pushed through (I'm such a completionist that I just couldn't leave the book half read :P) I've been reading 100+ pages a day, which is what free time I have to read.

Both the plot and most of the annoying characters get a LOT better from the second half of the second book on so I'd read at least that much before giving up on the series altogether.

I'm on book 5 and wasn't massively loving the series until I got to book 3.

Book 3 definitely picks up the pace, I finished it in 3 days! Seriously can't wait to see what happens next, just started book 4 :)
Was pleasantly surprised to notice book 4 is almost twice as long as the third! Though if there's more 1k+ page books in the series I might not be able to catch up in time for the 14th, we'll see :)

They seem to take me around 10 days, I'm about halfway through book 5.

I made it through book one. I, like Cher, tend to cut my losses early, and in this case it was not quite early enough.

I really liked Mad Ship and the whole series by Robin Hob.
