➽ And the moral of this rereread is: No, this isn't the most groundbreakingly original fantasy series ever, and yes, the book suffers from a moderately severe case of Skim Skim Skim, but the characters are great, there's plenty of hahahaha, and the story is quite entertaining, so there.

➽ And the moral of this reread is: I was probably as Super Extra High™ on magic mushrooms as the shamans in this series when I first read this book. I mean, it’s been only three ridiculous weeks but I’d already forgotten most of the story pre-reread (yeah yeah yeah, shame on me and stuff). Not only that, it seems I failed to mention Invincible (the mostest awesomest shaggy-haired, serrated claws and fangs-clad pet rat ever) in my review. And disproportionate, ever-twittering midget zombies, too. And crayfish-tight grips! Crayfish!!! I forgot to tell you about my murderous babies’ cousins twice removed!!! Can you believe this?! Now if that isn’t the ultimate proof I need to lay off the magic fungi for a while, I don’t know what is.

“A green goblin with blue eyes; three dark elves; a dour knight; nine warriors, one of whom appeared to be an angry gnome; and a dwarf in an absurd bowler hat. Plus a skinny rogue. Not the kind of company you meet in the city every day of the week.”

Talk for yourself, inexperienced puny human. You see delightfully colorful cliques like this one everyday in my neck of the nefarious woods.

Warning : a deadly pre-review digression rivetingly riveting introduction is about to be mercilessly unleashed upon you. But. I am feeling uncharacteristically friendly and kind-hearted today, so I put it in spoiler tags. Because, as deadly rivetingly riveting as it might be, I am aware that some of you like the crap to be cut dramatically. You are most welcome and stuff.

Okay, let’s be disgustingly honest here: I hardly remember anything about this book even though I read it less than 10 days ago. So right now you’re probably thinking that this momentary amnesia has two probably probable causes:

① The book is Somewhat Very Bad (SVB™). Which doesn’t make much sense, you’ll have to agree, since I rated it 4 stars, but you Clueless Barnacles and your reverse logic will never fail to leave me ever so slightly dumbfounded and most puzzled and stuff, so a 4-star rating in Nefarious Crustacean Territory might equate a -10 star rating in Clueless Barnacle Zone, who the bloody shrimp knows?

And/or

② I am suffering from severe memory loss because of old age.



I said OLD AGE, you Disrespectful Arthropods! I never said anything about the excessive consumption of slightly fermented beverages! I’ll have you know I NEVER drink alcoholic, um, refreshments. Never ever ever ever. Especially not 10-year-old Laphroaig. Nope nope nope and yuck yuck yuck. Anyway, I am very sorry to inform you that neither of your hypotheses are right. Ha. You see, my Problematic Decapods, the reason why I don’t remember much about this book is that, um, you know, I, err, I, um, you know, err…Funny, I can’t remember what I was about to say. I’m pretty sure it was fascinating, though. And deep. Really deep. Oh, well.

So. This book is about my thieving boyfriend Harold-who-is-called-Garrett-in-the-original-Russian-but-why-the-fish-keep-his-original-name-when-Harold-sounds-super-sexy-and-oh-so-much-cooler-than-Garrett-eyeroll and his quest to save the world from a doomed doom at the hands of The Bad Evil Guy Without A Name. (Hey, no blaming my ever-failing memory this time, the bad, evil guy really is actually called the Nameless One and stuff.)

My Harold is still as yummy as ever here, although I must admit he isn’t quite as deliciously snarky and full of smartassitude as he was in book 1. Which might or might not explain why he went down a few notches on the Potential Harem Material Thermometer (PHMT™). But hey, he has a valid excuse. I mean, as darkly scrumptious yet funny as fish light and fluffy things were in book 1, it all got gloomy pretty fast in this installment. Like, the characters who are killed dead really stay really killed dead and stuff. The author disposes of a character you slightly somewhat like (a little), but you keep thinking to your little self, “Pehov is a nice chap, he wouldn’t exterminate so and so and so and so, and so and so, and so and so, would he? Of course not, that would be too cruel. Also, it wouldn’t be very hilarious.” But guess what? He bloody shrimping does.



My thoughts exactly, dear boy. However, I have to say that your telenovela-like family drama is nothing compared to what Pehov put my poor, sensitive little self through here.

You know what makes this worse? That Pehov, in his All-Machiavellian Evil Russianness (AMER™) starts the book with funny-as-fish shenanigans involving a sullen, angry, cantankerous dwarf’s toothache (don’t ask). And once he’s gotten you all gleeful and joyful and stuff…bam! He gets grim and ruthless and bloody-stinking-fish-this-ain’t-not-so-rollickingly-droll-anymore on you. The epitome of Evil Russianness, if you ask me. I could swear I heard Pehov muhahahaha-ing like a maniac in the background while I was reading the book, too.



Hey, nice haircut, Alexey! You’ll have to give me your hairdressers’ address!

Anyway, things escalate quickly and dark stuff scrumptiously happens. My boyfriend pulls off a Super Extra Cool Heist (SECH™). There are delightful battles, gutted bodies, spilled entrails and severed limbs yay! . Yet another Wondrous Pehov Bar Fight (WPBF™) is had. (Still can’t decide which is most wondrous, this one or the one in the previous installment. They are both most stupendilicious, if you ask me.) There are extremely appetizing treacherous bastards. Adventurous undertakings are undertaken. There is Walking Prophecy stuff and mysterious-as-fish stuff I might perhaps maybe want to know more about. Possibly. Kli-Kli is still the mostest awesomest goblin jester ever. (I also happen to think he is the best dance teacher ever, but I’m not sure everyone agrees with me on that one.) There is a supercalifragilisticexpiashrimpocious carrying spell that is clearly the best thing since skewered barnacles sliced bread. Also, Miralissa the fanged elfess = YUM.

Okay, so this book is much slower paced than the first one. It is partially infected with the shudder-inducing (and usually deadly) Filling Filler Virus (FFV™), and you pretty much have to get to the 50% mark for exciting stuff to get well, um, you know, exciting and stuff. The translation is much, much, MUCH better than that of book 1, but the editing is downright catastrophic (missing letters, missing words, extra spaces, missing spaces, misspellings, typos…the works). Also, the book suffers from a desperate lack of ever-bleating goat-men. (Oops, sorry, I meant to say “Doralissians.”) BUT. Apart from that, it’s all Slightly Very Good (SVG™), so I rest in my case and stuff.

➽ And the moral of this Hey, Looks Like Alzheimer’s Is Not Yet Me After All Crappy Non-Review (HLLAINYMAACNR™) is: Evgeny says the next book is the darkest in this trilogy. And now I wonder: will ANY of the characters survive the next installment? With all their limbs intact? And no toothache? If the author keeps this up, I’m pretty sure they won’t. So. Let’s finish this with a very private message to Evil Mr. Pehov: kill my boyfriend, Kli-Kli, Miralissa or any of the lucky few who miraculously managed to make it through this book and I’m unleashing the murderous crustaceans on you. But hey, no pressure and stuff.

Yes, Darwin is indeed a huge Siala fan. And a huge Pehov fan, too. I mean, he's got all the guy's books on his pre-20th century Kindle and stuff. I kid you not.

This was a very good example of a middle book in a trilogy. It managed to move the characters forward on their journey, while keeping them involved in very entertaining antics, and helping them gain additional information and needed items for the ultimate leg of Garret's/Harold's travels. It also managed to maintain the same narrative tone, while also edging that tone darker as it leads into a book where clearly less fun and more sad events are going to happen.

I enjoyed this a great deal. And I apologize for this pretty feeble review.

Επίσης η γραφή γίνεται αρκετά πιο ενδιαφέρουσα, κάτι που σε συνδυασμό με την εξίσου ενδιαφέρουσα εξέλιξη της πλοκής κάνει την ανάγνωση αρκετά συναρπαστική. Με άλλα λόγια αν κάνεις υπομονή με το πρώτο βιβλίο θα ανταμειφθείς στο δεύτερο. Να δω τώρα τι επιφυλάσσει η συνέχεια.

My thoughts:
It’s not often these days that I read translated books, but this is one of them as it is translated from Russian, and the translator does a good job.

In the last book they all left on a long journey, and one traveller died and the loss is still felt. They all know now that they all will not make it to Hrad Spein and even fewer will make it out of there. It will not be an easy journey.

Harold the thief doesn’t have the same spotlight as in book 2, in this one we get of the rest too. For example the goblin Kli-Kli, he plays the fool, but he is hiding something and he is much cleverer than what he looks. Kli-Kli is the humour in this book and that’s nice. As for the rest of the characters, I do like them, and I wonder at the same time how many will remain at the end. An interesting cast, but also a cast of warriors and warriors fall.

This book is all about the journey. They are travelling, going to one city, gets into trouble, and later there is some fighting too. At the end I see a glimpse of something new and interesting. But at the same time the journey does feel a bit long, and in a way not much happen at all. The more interesting parts are the dreams Harold are having, of the Houses of Pain, Love and more, about a figure called the Master, about things passed that led to the Nameless one. And the best of all, a strange world where 3 figures wants him to come and save him. It seems worlds can be created. That whole system of magic fascinated me, and I hope we get more clues to it.

Conclusion:
A good enough fantasy novel, an epic journey, different characters and races, and the hunt for something that might lead to their death. What this book did bring me was more about the world itself. And I would read the next one, and hope he gets what he is after so that I can see the world saved.

This book continues directly from the first one; Shadow Harold and his band continue on their quest to recover the Rainbow Horn, the only thing that can prevent the Nameless One from sending his army to destroy Harold's homeland. Naturally, the journey isn't an easy one - as well as the harsh landscape itself and the dangers posed by the elves' cousins, the orcs, the Nameless One has many human servants with terrifying powers of sorcery at their command who seek to stop them.

This book continues in the same serious-but-slightly-absurd vein as the first one. The 'quest for the magical McGuffin' is as old as epic fantasy, but the slight ridiculousness gives it just enough of an unusual flavour to be thoroughly entertaining. Much of this absurdity is provided by Kli-Kli, the goblin jester whose insistence that Harold is the destined hero from a goblin prophecy is a source of annoyance to the thief. I should add though that despite this thread of humour the story has its share of action and grimness - Harold and his companions are battling through danger, and the author doesn't flinch from the consequences.

So yes, I really enjoyed it and recommend it if you don't mind well written quest fantasy that has a slightly skewered, tongue in cheek feel.

Fühlte sich für mich wie ein typischer Mittelband an: die Handlung ist etwas ruhiger als im Reihenauftakt, und es werden Handlungsstränge/ Ereignisse für das große Finale aufgebaut.
Der Schreibstil war bereits wie im ersten Band sehr angenehm zu lesen mit Spannung, ausdrucksstarken Actionszenen und einer guten Prise Humor.
Leider ist der Cast nach wie vor hauptsächlich männlich, es gibt jedoch bei der Zusammensetzung ein wenig Abwechslung und am Ende taucht eine zweite coole Frauenfigur auf. Ansonsten werden die bereits bestehenden Bande zwischen den Figuren weiter ausgearbeitet; generell lag für mich der Fokus in diesem Band im Vergleich zu Band 1 mehr auf den Figuren als auf der Story.
Natürlich passieren wieder ein paar krasse Sachen, aber hauptsächlich wurden Konflikte aus dem Vorgänger aufgegriffen.
Ich bin nun schon sehr gespannt auf den nächsten und letzten Band der Trilogie, der aufgrund der hier aufgebauten Plotpunkte sehr spannend und ereignisreich zu werden verspricht.

Der zweite Teil der Reihe hat mir besser gefallen als der erste. Die Charaktere beginnen einem ans Herz zu wachsen und das Erzähl-Tempo nimmt zu. Jetzt bin ich wirklich gespannt auf die letzte Etappe des Abenteuers!

Perhaps the finest series of classic fantasy I have ever read, LOR and The Hobbit being excluded. Explore the mystical world of a thief (Harold), who ends up on a journey to defeat an enemy so evil, so powerful that it looks like his world will be totally destroyed. While he initially does it for a King's ransom, his character's evolution from book-to-book is actually very moving. I stumbled across this while looking at a Bookburb email (which I highly recommend anyone signing up for). One of those nice surprises from a Russian author that I might not have known about. The trilogy is exciting, fast-paced, and should be on the "must read" list of every serious Fantasy lover--of which I personally belong.

Teine osa "Siala kroonikate" nimelisest triloogiast on nagu teised osad ikka - hakkab kuskilt keskelt ja lõppeb eikuskil. Esimene osa lõppes sellega, et kogu kamp jõudis Rannengi nimelisse provintsikeskusesse ja kolmveerand raamatut hiljem on nad ikka veel seal. Samas oli tegevus piisavalt huvitav - maagiline võti mis avas miski vahekorruse ukse seal maa-aluses labürindis kuhu nad suunduvad, pandi pihta ja kogu kamp tegeleb selle tagasisaamisega. Võti saadakse tagasi aga siis on neil kohe kukil mingid pahad, Peapaha käsilased. Raamat lõppeb sisenemisega sinna metsa kus keskle siis asub see sissepääs sinna labürinti kus too maagiline võlu-ese mida üldse otsima mindigi, peaks asuma.
Nagu esimeses köiteski meeldisid mulle teistmoodi tunnetus kui lääne massifantasys. Juba need nimed - Alistan Markauz, Balistan Pargaid, Arnh, Mumr, Oro Gabsberg, Lafreza, Džok Imargo, Meilo Trug...Lisaks oli siin toosama juba eespool mainitud tabamatu venelikkus, mis teeb kogu romaani/triloogia huvitavamaks, sest on natuke etteaimamatu.
Ma proovisin aru saada, mis tants on too "džanga" mis pealkirjas mainitud. Internet aga ei paistnud sellist tantsu tundvat. Nimemood "janga" aga viis mõtted juba tuntud tantsule "jenka", mis aga teeks kogu asja koomiliseks. "Jenka vaimudega" ei kõla mitte dramaatilis-paatoslikult vaid totakas-muhedalt. Vähemalt igaühele, kes teab mismoodi too hüplev rühmatants käib...
Mis siin muud kui soovitada. Inimesed võiksid seda triloogiat raamatukogudest küsida, see ehk elavdaks veidi Varrakut. Mujalt netis leiduv eesti ulmefännide kriitika mis seda triloogiat justkui arvutimängu kirjapandud koopiaks sõimab, tuleb alusetuks tunnistada...

Первая часть о приключениях Гаррета читалась довольно бодро. Не могу сказать, что там было что-то особо увлекательное или неординарное (ничего такого днем с огнем не сыщете), но все шло вполне сносно. А вот вторая часть утомила знатно. Отмечу два главных недостатка. Во-первых, автор кошмарно перебарщивает с повторением пройденного. Да, во многих серийных книгах в начале как-то напоминают о том, что было в предыдущей книге, но не так же! На тридцати процентах прочитанного я все еще находила огромные куски с довольно подробным пересказом того, что было в первой книге. Да плюс еще и характеристики героев повторяются (и не по разу). А ж глаз дергаться начинает уже. Второй недостаток заключается в том, что на страницах, оставшихся после повторения, ничего по сути и не происходит. Отряд идет из точки А в точку Б, по дороге теряя участников. Но что самое интересное, даже эти потери не вызывают каких-то эмоций. Повествование не дает этим героям раскрыться, поэтому и потрясений особых читатель не испытывает. Очень надеюсь, что третья книга окажется хотя бы на уровне первой, а то уж совсем за упокой выйдет.

As I am reading this second novel in the series, I find myself noting the same observation every time: this is such a believable story. Like any other mercenary band traveling through danger, we lose major players in the storyline as we travel further and further into danger. I am impressed as to how the author easily describes this world as we travel though a small portion of it, while we are informed as to the ancient world in little bits and pieces and to how the main character is likely to bring both those worlds together. What I can’t believe is that the author used the bland name Harold as the protagonist, but this may have something to do with the translation to English (I know nothing about Russian). I am looking forward to the last installment of this series and plan on researching other books from this author that get translated into English in the future.

Another SUPERB offering from this amazing author. The premise is traditional rather than clichéd, with the usual mix of humans, elves, gnomes and dwarves (although the elves are unlike anything Tolkien presented, ditto the dwarves) and a human thief who has somehow ended up with the spirit of an eons-dead sorcerer living in his head, and the rather unwanted ability to literally take a walk in his own dreams. Added to the mix is a small green goblin jester, who is so much more than what he appears to be.

The action is non-stop, there are plots and counter-plots to satisfy everyone, and there is even some ultra-creepy stuff thrown in for those who simply cannot do without. If you are looking for a happily-ever-after offering, this series is NOT for you!!

Suvine keskpäraste sarjade läbilugemise masohhism (?) jätkub. Tegelikult tahtsin kohe esimesele osale otsa lugeda järjed, sest olin õigesse meeleolusse häälestunud, aga need pagana raamatud peitsid end mu eest ära (kööginurka pugemine ei ole aus mäng!) ja noh, suurem osa õigest meeleseisundist oli loomulikult hääbunud.

Mulle meeldib Garreti avameelne ebausaldusväärsus endale hinnangute andmise juures ja tema raamatutegelasele harukordne kinnisus oma hämmastavamate kogemuste jagamisel.

Nothing special, mediocre book. Minus one star for Kli-Kli, who irritated me so much that at one point I really considered not finishing it. But I did and despite my lack of enthusiasm I'm curious how it ends, so I'll be reading third book too. I suspect that in original the book is much better. Probably lost sth vital in translation.

No es posible despegarse del libro, son unos personajes bien creados, te encariñas, sufres y te ríes a carcajadas. El mundo que creó es algo diferente a lo que estamos acostumbrados en fantasía, no quedas completamente envuelto, sabes que hay mucho más y quieres conocerlo.
Disfruté más esta segunda parte, y definitivo entra en mis favoritos de fantasía dura.

Kniha je hezky designově zpracovaná, stejně jako u prvního dílu mi rozložení stránek i velikost písma vyhovovala. Co mě ale obrovsky, opravdu hodně zamrzelo je, že jsme přišli o ty nádherné ilustrace. Roman Kýbus je nadaný ilustrátor a jeho ilustrace mi hodně chyběly.

Kniha navazuje na první díl, se skupinou, která doprovází Harolda Stína, se snažíme postoupit po cestě dále. Doprovází jej různorodá skupinka společníků, od elfů po gnóma. Toto se mi na knize strašně líbilo – jak autor dokázal jednotlivé rasy vystihnout a udržet jejich profil, nezapadl do šedého stereotypu, využíval výhody, které mu to nabízelo. Celkově je promyšlenost světa, různé jazyky, pojmenování a geografie, s kterými si Pechov dal tolik práce, tím nejlepším na knize. Ani charaktery, ani vtip, ani příběh, ale ty kulisy, ve kterých se příběh odehrává. I když to občas připomíná jízdu všemi možnými světy a kulturami. Elfové, zombie, mágové i zlobři. Ale je to zábava.

Na chvíli jsem zůstal jako opařený – jestli se kostlivci naučili mluvit, je načase, abych zamířil na hřbitov – konec světa musí být za rohem. str. 104

Abych autorovi nekřivdila, i ty postavy mají co do sebe. Není to typ charakterů, z kterých by jste nemohli spát nebo do kterých se bezhlavě zamilujete. Jsou to prostě postavy, které se vám nenápadně vkradou pod kůži a pak se tam tvrdohlavě drží. Od otravného škodolibého goblina Kli-Kliho, který jakožto králův šašek se na celou výpravu zamotal zvláštním způsobem, ale díky kterému ve skupině nikdy netrpíte nudou. Můžeme pokračovat málomluvným vojákem Úhořem, o kterém toho nevíme zhola nic, ale který chvilku před smrtí propadne sentimentu a naší hlavní postavě se svěří. A je to zajímavé čtení. Dvojice gnóm a trpaslík, kteří se jako znepřátelené rasy nenávidí do poslední kapky krve, ale kteří jsou v podstatě přáteli. Elfové – ti jsou kapitola sama o sobě, je ale zajímavé je vidět jinak než jako melancholické stíny lesa pijící za měsíčku víno a pletoucí svou krásou mladé nezkušené panny.

Okamžitě jsem byl ve střehu. Temní elfové mi nikdy předtím víno nenabídli. Miralissin bratranec byl dnes výjmečně zdvořilý. A to se říká, že elfové jsou nevraživá, zlomyslná stvoření.
Na druhou stranu, oni takoví skutečně jsou. str. 139-140

A máme tu samozřejmě Harolda. Z počátku jsme si mysleli, že je to obyčejný zloděj. No dobře, to bylo hrubé, je to mistr zloděj. Ale obyčejný člověk. Jenže pak se připlete do staré vize o magickém zničení velké části města a odnese si z toho v hlavě vzpomínku na velkého čaroděje Valdera. Vzpomínku, která mluví, myslí a ještě stále vládne docela slušným magickým potencionálem. V tomto okamžiku už nejspíše Harold přestává být tak docela obyčejným. Když k tomu přičteme, že je v podstatě postavou figurující ve starém proroctví – Tanečníkem ve stínech – začínáme o té obyčejnosti pochybovat více než dost. A to je jen začátek.

Zdálo se mi, že přestože je kniha objemově téměř stejně obsáhlá, jako první díl, není tam tolik toho děje. Autor to tam více obkecával a příběh neubíhal tak svižně, jako v prvním díle. Začátek se navíc rozbíhal pomalu a já strašně dlouho měla problém se začíst, z části proto, že se tam v podstatě nic nedělo, zčásti proto, že i ten autorův styl psaní, který se mi ze začátku zase zdál dost kostrbatý a na který jsem si zase musela zvykat, mi čtení zpomaloval.

K chybičkám vytknu drobnosti jako chybějící mezera či tečka. A vadila mi i lehká zmatečnost v tom honu na naše hrdiny. V knize máme de facto dva různé záporáky. Jednoho jistého Bezejmenného, který je hlavní a zřetelnou hrozbou, která co nevidět vtrhne do hrdinova světa a může vše zničit, a poté tajemného Pána, o kterém nevíme takřka nic, ale který docela pilně spřádá další a další plány, jak Haroldovi a přátelům ztížit cestu. Možná mu nechce zabránit zastavit Bezejmenného, jistě mu však Harold dost překáží. A s rychlostí, s jakou Harold s nějakým štěstím pokaždé unikne, Pánovi nejspíše i vadit začne.

Jeho Milost si nedělala žádné starosti s tím, že se tak z ní stane spoluviník vloupání, což by každý slušný šlechtický rod spolehlivě zneuctilo nejmíň na dalších deset generací. (Na druhou stranu, o žádnou skutečnou potupu by nešlo: každý ví, že většina šlechticů krade v mnohem větším měřítku než obyčejní občané.) str. 175

Kdybych měla knihu zhodnotit celkově, první díl byl vydařenější. Na druhou stranu je tohle prokletí všech druhých knih trilogií – jak vést příběh tak, abychom se příliš rychle nedostali ke konci? Druhý díl je v podstatě dobrý, na druhou stranu by mohl být i lepší. Mezi klady rozhodně patří svět, který autor ještě více vykreslil a postavy, které se taky rozvinuly. Mezi zápory zasadím zadrhávající děj a lítost nad ztrátou Kýbusových ilustrací. Pokud jste již Tuláka ve stínech četli, určitě se nebojte sáhnout i po Tanci. Není to špatný příběh, navíc tuším, že závěr bude více než dobrý, protože oba předchozí díly končily otevřeně. Sáhnout však samostatně po Tanci nedoporučuju – v knize máme odkazy na děj prvního dílu a čtenář by byl jenom zmaten. Kniha je takové klasické fantasy, putování hrdiny za cílem, překonávajícího překážky. Ale je to hezké čtení. To zapřít nemůžu. :))

Zloděj a kralovska kompanie pokracuji v ceste k zapovezenemu hradu pro artefakt. Cestu jim hati poskoci dosud neznameho Pána a duverovat se neda ani vlastnim spojencum.
Opet ctive napsane, hlavni hrdina misty vysvetluje a promlouva ke ctenari. Nechava sebou vlacet, ale sem tam se take chopi iniciativy. Krom toho se kolem nej deji spatne vysvetlitelne jevy v niz se snazi zachovat chladnou hlavu.

Kodėl daug kam nepatinka Kli-Kli? 🤔 Man jis - vienas įsimintiniausių personažų. Pirmos dalies atpasakojimai neerzino, patiko Garetto "sapnai", veiksmo buvo pakankamai. Nekantrauju sužinoti, kaip pasibaigs kelionė.
