What Else Are You Reading? October 2012
Finished To Light A Candle by Mercedes Lackey. Now on to book 3, When Darkness Falls.Great epic fantasy, should check it out if you've missed this.
Finally finished Cloud Atlas (Full Review). I liked it, but that book plus some other things have really killed my crazy reading bender I've been on the last 2.5 months or so since I joined the club.
I am looking forward to reading through all the discussion and we'll see if I have anything smart enough to say about it (I'm not optimistic at this point).
I'm now on to 2 books: I'm audio-booking The Godfather as I'll be taking a road trip back home this weekend, and the audio is longer than my drive.
I'm also finally back to Robin Hobb with The Mad Ship, which I've been greatly looking forward to since I finished Ship of Magic.

Finished Cloud Atlas & definitely need a break from that adventure. Seriously struggled with that one. Probably the next book in the queue will be Ghost Story to get caught up before Cold Days comes out next month.

First time? If so, lucky you.
Though this is one book I wish I had found at a younger age. I was in my mid 20s by the time I read it.

I done reading(audio book) 'The Minority Report and Other Stories by Philip K. dick and read by Keir dullea. I got it in the public library 10/06/2012 and finished it on 10/10/2012.
I bought the Humble Bundle of Ebooks, and am trundling my way through them. The Two I've just read, Zoo City and Pirate Cinema, are both amazing books, that have already made it more than worthwhile, and I still have seven more to go!
Didn't like When We Were Real, skeevy main character. Didn't like The Long Earth by Pratchett and Barnes because of the ending.Amazing short story collection by Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Permeable Borders, pick it up if you've loved her other stuff. Also I started the collection of Patricia McKillip's short stories. And just started Libriomancer, which looks fun and genre savvy.
Currently reading "The Summer We Fell Apart" by Robin Antalek. Also, The John Carter of Mars seies (again). Randolph Lalonde's "Spinward Fringe" stories. The "Cthulurotica" from the Vaginal Fantasy group on Geek and Sundry. And probably a couple I am missing. It's nice to know that I am not the only one out there who reads multiple books at once. lol.
currently reading the WMA audiobook, Ender's Game:Ender Wiggen Series. Book 1. I got from my Public Library(Overdrive Media).
Now that I'm finished reading the Booker shortlist, I'm relaxing with some light reads like The Twelve by Justin Cronin (in audio, and good so far), and maybe Light by M. John Harrison.
Finished When Darkness Falls by Mercedes Lackey. Great series, going to take a scifi break before moving onto the 2nd trilogy in the series. Now listening to The Heart of the Matter: Odyssey One by Evan C. Currie. Book 2 in the military scifi Odessey Series.
Just finished
I am now about to start
This is the first in a series.
Saw the book cover for the latest in the series which has a badass riding a bike and since I ride, well, why not, a guy who returns from hell and rides, I got to read this!
I'm 25% of the way done with Niven & Benford's Bowl of Heaven. It's like real science fiction, and not too long either.

Good though? I saw it earlier and was thinking of giving it a shot.

I'm taking two weeks off work to recover from helping run Octocon (Ireland's National Science Fiction Convention) so I finally get to catch up on my reading.First up is Doctorow and Stross's post-singularity comedy The Rapture of the Nerds, which is good so far.

It was quite good. Zzzap really stole the show for me towards the end.
Flip flopping between zombies and vampires again, and starting up Blood Oath tonight.

It is an intriguing book. Just when I thought I had the measure of it, a passage involving a conversation between Enders siblings has caused me to rethink.
Finished The Heart of the Matter: Odyssey One by Evan C. Currie. Good book, not quite as good as the 1st one. Too many questions, not enough answers. Hopefully book 3 will start answering the questions. Was going to take a longer break from fantasy, but really want to listen to the Enduring Flame trilogy, starting with book 1, The Phoenix Unchained by Mercedes Lackey.

You never ever get the measure of Ender's Game. I've read the book more times than I can count, and every time I reread it, I still find/learn something new from it.
I've been listening to 14 by Peter Clines. It's so good I can't stop listening, but I've had so much going on that I have to keep backtracking. It's super fast-paced; and if you blank out a minute, you miss something important.
Finished The Island of the Mighty, which was quite lovely, and am about to start Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz.
Just bought Red Country by Joe Abercrombie from Waterstones, read the first page and had to put it down, it's so good that if I kept reading I'd never get anything done today! :D
Working my way through Cloud Atlas but it is slow going. Just got Jam so will be reading that at some point.
I'm reading Cloud Atlas, but honestly more looking forward to the two books waiting to be picked up in my local bookshop tomorrow. My favorite author hasn't put out anything in 10 years and I finally found out in the last year she's published a trilogy under a new name. So I just finished The Traitor's Daughter which was absolutely excellent, as expected, and this weekend I'll start in on the next two- The Ruined City and The Wanderers.
I'm so excited!
Finished book 1 of the Enduring Flame trilogy, The Phoenix Unchained by Mercedes Lackey. Now onto book 2, The Phoenix Endangered.Maybe they'll get better, but so far, I don't like this trilogy as much as the first one. Having hard time caring if any of the characters survive. This trilogy takes place 1000yrs after the first one, so, except for a few long lived elves or dragons, it's all new characters. And the characters and story of the first trilogy are legends twisted nearly unrecognizably by the long passage of time.

OK, found one character I like, the unicorn Kareta. She's fun to listen to, but if I had to travel with her, I think I'd strangle her by the 2nd night, to shut her up. 8-D
Just started reading The Dirty Streets of Heaven so I can get a jump ahead of the November book & follow the forums earlier than later.
I have finally read Ender's Game few days ago! Now I can't wait to go to library to pick up the sequels.. Amazing! Also, I started Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming, which is my first Zelazny book. Which of his other work would you recommend?
Competine wrote: "Also, I started Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming, which is my first Zelazny book. Which of his other work would you recommend?"The Amber series (The Great Book of Amber) is the obvious suggestion (although I for one wouldn't think less of you if you just read the first five books and skipped the second five, which were a second series that came later). Lord of Light is his other most "important" book, I expect, although it's a bit on the 1960's experimental side, as are books like Doorways in the Sand.
I've also always had a soft spot for some of his sword & sorcery/fantasy novels -- Jack of Shadows in particular, and Dilvish, the Damned.
Competine wrote: "I have finally read Ender's Game few days ago! Now I can't wait to go to library to pick up the sequels.. Amazing!..."Read the Shadow series before going on to Speaker for the Dead. They're more in line with Ender. Some of the stuff he's written to fill in the time between Ender's game and Speaker for the dead, like Ender in Exile, are OK. But the the tone shifts so drastically with Speaker that it might as well be a whole new series.
Since I gave up on Cloud Atlas, I started Embassytown and am loving it. I love the Ariekei. Great story so far. Obviously for me, much more engaging than Cloud Atlas.
I finally have enough free time and head space to read Infinite Jest. It's my mission for the year so I hope it's worth it.

Agree with Joseph on Zelanzy's stuff...one of my favorites of all time.
Getting towards the end of my reread of Saga of the Exiles - just finishing The Nonborn KingHave to say I'm loving these books more than ever, think this must be in my top 5 sci fi/fantasy series. Highly recommend them if you haven't already read them
Just finished Deryni Rising, which holds up quite well, and decided to move away from Ballantine Adult Fantasy for a while -- instead, I'm starting A Pehov Duet by Alexey Pehov (a Russian author), a free (and brief) short story collection that ties into his series beginning with Shadow Prowler.
Finished The Enduring Flame trilogy book 2, The Phoenix Endangered, now on to book 3, The Phoenix Transformed.Story getting better, but still don't care about the 2 main characters. As war boils around them and friends die, I am getting very tired of their whining and moaning about being forced to fight and kill. It was understandable at the beginning, but now after all that has happened, it's just childish.
Still working on a copy of Light that I picked up used last month. It's written in really dense prose, but the plot threads have sucked me in.
Got my hands on Red Country by Abercrombie two days ago and I'm halfway through it. Not quite as good as BSC or Heroes at this point, but it's definitely a must read for anyone who liked The First Law.
I just finished listening to Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. I liked it, though I kinda saw it's "greater message" about halfway through and could have done without the cheesy epilogue. The narrator was pretty good. All in all, it was a fun little book with a bit of mystery, and a nice cross of book loving with modern tech.

Speaking of comics, Mike Kaluta's Starstruck is out in trade paperback. The art is beautiful, but I still don't understand it.
Couldn't get past page 100 in Boneshaker.
